jamaica farewell - Harry Belafonte (cover)

- This is a very nice laid-back version of Harry Belafonte's song.
Written by Lord Burgess (Irving Burgie) and Harry Belafonte recorded/released it in 1956.
The tempo is taken from Jamaica farewell by Don Williams, which is kind of a slow country version of this song. But instead of playing it in the C-key like Don Williams did, it is played in the D-key, as in Marty Robbins' version .
Here, Jamaica Farewell is sung by a dutch tenor ( opera / operette singer ) who sometimes likes to sing classical pop-songs as well.
Maybe you think it's a strange combo but just listen how this great song comes to life again.
It is recorded in 1 take.
Instruments used are a 1995 Gibson J-200E, Fender Jazz-Bass and an east-European acoustic electric guitar.
I will soon be uploading more songs (classicals like Panis Angelicus as well) of this great tenor accompanied live by guitar, bass and/or piano.
Musicians: j.a.g. van der weyde, w.r. van der weyde, p.j. van der weyde

Lyrics/chords of this great song (incase you want to play along):
D......................................G...................
Down the way where the nights are gay
..............A...................................D.................
And the sun shines daily on the mountain top
D........................G...............
I took a trip on a sailing ship
....................A...........................D.................
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop
CHORUS:
D................................Em/G.........
But I'm sad to say, I'm on my way
..A7........................D...............
Won't be back for many a day
D...........................................Em/G...............
My heart is down, my head is turning around
..............A7........................D....................
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Sounds of laughter everywhere
And the dancing girls swaying to and fro
I must declare that my heart is there
Though I've been from Maine to Mexico
CHORUS
Down at the market you can hear
Ladies cry out while on their head they bear
Ackie rice and salt fish is nice
And the rum is good any time of year
CHORUS
