Hi thanks for the very informative video 🙏🏼. I have a question, I have a standing Buddha statue that had his left hand raised and facing outward, like semuii-in but performed using the left hand, however yogan-in is not performed. What is the significance of the left hand being raised instead of the the right. In Hinduism blessings are always given with the right hand. I hope you can help. Thank you
Thanks for the comment.
First of all there're many hand signs to distinguish, and that's why I cannot affirm something particular.
Meanwhile, I can't say it's 100% correct, but I found an interesting article about the left and the right side of buddha statues. The theory is as follows.
Initially there're 2 types of the statues. i.e.either raising left hand or right hand. To sum up, this indicates different intentions of buddha. If we premise that the essence of buddhism is "慈悲"(mercy), we can divide 慈悲 into 2, namely 慈(love) and 悲(compassion). Also we can divide the parts of buddha from 2 perspectives: 【Left or Right】 and 【upper or lower part of the body】.
Left and Upper signify 慈, whereas right and lower signify 悲.
That means, the statue raising left hand symbolizes left and upper, in other words, it's "慈慈"(double). hence we can assume, raising left hand indicates very strong 慈(because it's doubled).
Sorry if it's complicated. I hope it helps.
If I may clarify, since op seems to know Sanskrit, top/left indicates "maitrī. while bottom/right indicates "karunā."
