Gauge math! Yes, please. I often find myself between sweater sizes and make the larger size but with a gauge that’s more stitches per inch than called for, which seems to be working ok. But at the moment it’s all guesswork and I’d love to know the math. I’ve used your novice short rows and anker short rows tutorials to great success. Yay, math!

Hello and thank you YES, we would love an episode on calculating decreasing and picking up stitches, it is no easy feat especially if you have an eye condition and all the rows move around. I actually have to look for patterns that do not incorporate picking up stitches especially around the sleeve area and neck - there are OTHER WAYS to achieve a neckband and button band. I used to sew all of the time. But I wanted to learn to knit and sewing fell to the wayside. I think it is because knitting is so portable. I can take it with me almost anywhere. That was even more so when my husband and I started a family, and I toke the knitting to doctor appointments, soccer games, ballet lessons, etc.
That was definitely one of the amazing positives of knitting. Incredibly portable crafting. I still take a project or two (or more) with me everywhere - just in case.
Hj Tash I have made a few Churchmouse ponchos. I am tall and measure on diagonal from shoulder to as long as I want it then cast on. Lovely podcast as usual ❤
Your Shore Tee is really quite elegant! Lovely. I just looked through your tutorial list - it's extensive - and the one thing I was sure you had mentioned wasn't actually there. I think you have occasionally talked about neck ribbing that is too loose or flops forward and your solutions. I have that situation because neck ribbing should have been knitted on smaller needles - it is loose, flops and the neckline ends up being too wide. I think my solution will be to pick up the right leg of each stitch immediately below the ribbed neck, rip off the neck and then start knitting upwards on a smaller needle. For me this is quite drastic so wish me luck!
I have definitely talked about this before. I was thinking i would need to do this for the Shore Tee as it was doing what you were talking about before i blocked it. So i had planned to do exactly what you were mentioning (and record it) if blocking didnt fix the issue. Thankfully blocking DID fix it so i didnt have to do it. But i think your strategy is a really good one. Looking forward to hearing how it went. :)
Everytime you model one of your knits I want to make it. I love your Shore Tee and looking forward to seeing the Sellwood Tee when you finish. I would love a gauge video - I can't seem to ever meet gauge (I think I'm a tight knitter) but I struggle trying to figure out whether to go up a size or not.

I made the Easy Folded Poncho in the same colour! Haven’t worn it in a while so I plan on getting it out today:) I added a cable on one edge, that helped with the endless stockinette.

Hello, Tash! Yes, please to a future tutorial on picking up stitches. I don’t mind doing it, but I would like to become more precise in how I go about it. Usually, I start out trying to follow the pattern directions, then abandon that in frustration and just arbitrarily pick up until I have the right stitch count on my needles. Not ideal! 😅

Thank you so much. I am not really very experienced in this area so I am sure there are others who can explain it better than me. You can either dye the yarn or the FO. I imagine there are advantages and disadvantages either way but again, i am not the best person to speak to it.
Shore teee is great . And i can understand how hard it can be as i knitted this in pure linen. But definetly worth the effort. Clay sweater is one of my most worn knits you will enjoy the lighter weight of your yarn. I have it in air from drops and it worked well. Lastly Janka was pronounced perfectly ❤ ❤❤

I am always amazed at your knitting and wonder how you manage to get so much done? It takes me months to finish a sweater even knitting as much as time allows every day. Any secrets to getting things done quickly ? Or is it that some people knit faster than others?
Hi Diane - I think multi-tasking and making the most of every opportunity. Being able to knit without looking is really helpful. It also depends on the seasons of life. My children are at the age where they can make their own lunches and help with the cooking now. :)
I’d love to see how you pick up and knit. I just finished a bottom-up top yesterday and really struggled with picking up around the neckline and armholes. I even placed markers at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the way around to “pace” myself and still got really frustrated with being off. Picking up on a straight line is OK but on those rounded/slanted edges drove me crazy! 🤪

I also found that the smallest size of the Moby sweater has too much positive ease so I bought the Moby Sweater Junior and knitted the largest size. It worked out perfectly for my size. I used a fingering weight sock yarn paired with a mohair.

I made Joji’s Cedar Pullover with Shibui Reed 100% linen and it’s my favourite linen top. After washing it was so drapey and soft. I hope that’s the Shibui you have and it turns out the same.
Your shore tee is beautiful! About the purls looking bigger in your garter in the round, I have heard (and it makes sense) that a purl stitch uses more yarn than a knit stitch because of the way you wrap your yarn. You could do combination knitting (wrap your purls the other way so the stitch is mounted backwards, then knit through the back on the next row) and they might match the other garter better.
Thanks so much Brenda. I've heard the same thing but was never actually tried it till now - crazy, huh? It definitely tightens things up. But i am a bit concerned it will muck up my gauge overall so i think for the Clay sweater, I am just going to be a bit more conscious of purling a bit tighter. I think that should be enough. :)
Tash , have a look at the moby sweater junior - the largest size is 33.5 inches. I’ve seen other podcasters make this size with body and sleeve length mods - turned out well .

I always learn something and get inspired watching you. I have a question, I do not have a lot of experience with hand dyed yarn and alternating yarns. You mentioned with the Sellwood Tee that you will alternate yarn once you start working flat, but didn't while working in the round. Do I only need to alternate yarns when working flat?
Hi Carrie. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I usually only alternate skeins for the last 10 grams of one skein and the first 10 grams of the second. If they are reasonably closely matched, this is usually enough to prevent a line at the change of skeins. It is easy to alternate when knitting flat as you just do it at the end of a row and there will be a pick up or a seam along that line so you never see the edge stitch or any potential puckering or gauge changes that can happen at times. Beautiful job on the Shore tee. I like your ballet neck better than the smaller neck on the pattern. I used to agonize over whether blues or blacks matched when I dressed for work, but they're really hard to match, even if they're part of a 2-piece suit. When I saw the Margaux pattern made up by Those Twins Who Knit, the top is very broad across the front of the shoulders, causing it to bunch in a fold at the front of the arm, because it doesn't seem to be curved in at the front of the armhole. That may also be a function of a stitch that is very stretchy widthwise. The neckline you made on the Shore tee would be lovely on the Margaux top. Do you pick up stitches on a neckline differently along a curve? If you want the neckline to curve toward the body, wouldn't you want fewer stitches in the ribbing there?
Thank you so much Jillian. When i say i pick up "more" stitches on the diagonal, i mean more stitches per row. Just because for the same number of rows, it is longer in length than going up vertical. So it isnt really more sts for the length. I hope that makes sense. :)
Hi Angela. I just knit my swatches flat. My gauge doesnt change enough for me to bother doing them in the round - at least for my tension. Which i am grateful for as it is a pain to do it in the round!

Hi there. For me, i gave up once i started having children. That was a strong motivator as i had all this time off when i was pregnant and then wouldnt smoke around my children. There became less and less opportunity and the desire just faded away. With alcohol, i had to challenge my beliefs around what i thought it provided. Allen Carr has a number of "Easy Way" to quit books. One on alcohol helped me. Perhaps one on smoking might help you. Well done on fighting to quit. I fought with alcohol for a long time before i finally quit but i never gave up trying. Finally i got there. For me, i prayed about it a lot as well. Mindfulness around the activity is really important. Thinking about the choice rather than being on auto-pilot. Not sure if any of that helps but good on you for challenging yourself. Never give up trying. You are worth it!
Hi Tash, my ears pricked up when you were talking about your garter stitch rounds on your Clay sweater. I’m knitting the Feldspar top that has the same ridged row and I can’t get rid of the jog when I start the next round. I’ve treated it like stripes but it still looks a mess. Knitting in cotton/linen. How did you handle that please?
Hi Jenny The Clay sweater pattern has these slipped stitches on the sides which help to hide the jog at the start of round when you switch stitches. Does the Feldspar top pattern have anything like that?
@@mostlyknitting oh I see what you mean and no the Feldspar has nothing but I’ve looked at all the other photos on Ravelry but apart from a couple who jogged it there seems to be no issue mentioned 🥺 it’s bottom up and now I’m at the armhole and really don’t want to start again. I’m kicking myself for not adding an edge which would have been a easy solution. Feeling really dumb now. I might try possibly fixing it from behind. Really love your podcasts… when you say a yarn is hard on your hands i’m wondering just what you mean. How does it manifest itself with you. Id really like to know as my hands are hurting (one finger and my right thumb) and am wondering if its because ive been knitting with Rowan Cotton Revive and wonder if its causing the pain in my hands.
Hi Elizabeth. That's a great question and I realise I am saying hands but i really mean a number of muscles and joints. My forearms and shoulders seem to cop it the worst due to body tension when there is no or little elasticity in the yarn. My hands also start to ache when i knit with plant materials for too long or if i am knitting something really tight like socks for too long. Switching to a wool blend for a while does the trick as I dont feel any tension when i knit at normal tension on a sweater out of wool or a wool blend. :)
Yes, there is something about cotton that creates extra tension in my hands… not necessarily the rest of my body. I knit English style as I think you do as well and this recent pain seems to be in my left pointer finger and after analysing my movements I use my pointer a lot to guide my right hand needle through the loops…if that makes sense. I wish I could alter my style of knitting however it has served me well as I knit quite quickly with very even stitches…very hard to teach an old dog (71 years and counting) new tricks. Btw…my hands dont hurt while im knitting it more like later in the night. “Suck it up princess” This is what I tell myself !!!!!!! Ha ha ha
If I can recommend something, when you have extra leftover scraps that is causing too much clutter, if they are made of natural materials, you can compost them and bury them with a bit of soil on top in the garden. I’ve done that and I found that eventually the material breaks down and becomes part of the soil. I’ve also done that with knits that I wore out and couldn’t repair.
Or another fun idea may be to make small ornaments like little hats or sweaters for Christmas tree. Or to donate them. That will eat up some leftovers 😊
@LidijasOriginals much better idea. You can also donate to nursing homes and Senior Centers for those that yarn craft. They love it! I also make scrappy socks and Musselburgh Hats with my various leftovers. Lots of uses for it besides burying and wasting perfectly good yarns!

Hello, Tash! Yes, please to a future tutorial on picking up stitches. I don’t mind doing it, but I would like to become more precise in how I go about it. Usually, I start out trying to follow the pattern directions, then abandon that in frustration and just arbitrarily pick up until I have the right stitch count on my needles. Not ideal! 😅

Thank you so much. I am not really very experienced in this area so I am sure there are others who can explain it better than me. You can either dye the yarn or the FO. I imagine there are advantages and disadvantages either way but again, i am not the best person to speak to it.
Shore teee is great . And i can understand how hard it can be as i knitted this in pure linen. But definetly worth the effort. Clay sweater is one of my most worn knits you will enjoy the lighter weight of your yarn. I have it in air from drops and it worked well. Lastly Janka was pronounced perfectly ❤ ❤❤

I am always amazed at your knitting and wonder how you manage to get so much done? It takes me months to finish a sweater even knitting as much as time allows every day. Any secrets to getting things done quickly ? Or is it that some people knit faster than others?
Hi Diane - I think multi-tasking and making the most of every opportunity. Being able to knit without looking is really helpful. It also depends on the seasons of life. My children are at the age where they can make their own lunches and help with the cooking now. :)
I’d love to see how you pick up and knit. I just finished a bottom-up top yesterday and really struggled with picking up around the neckline and armholes. I even placed markers at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the way around to “pace” myself and still got really frustrated with being off. Picking up on a straight line is OK but on those rounded/slanted edges drove me crazy! 🤪

I was thinking of doing a tutorial that is on the planning before you start pickingup stitches based on the number of rows you have to work with, the number of stitches you need to pick up, and whether you are picking up on the straight or an angle or into cast on stitches. I think i talk a bit about this in the video linked above but not a complete video on planning before you even get started. :)

I also found that the smallest size of the Moby sweater has too much positive ease so I bought the Moby Sweater Junior and knitted the largest size. It worked out perfectly for my size. I used a fingering weight sock yarn paired with a mohair.
Thank you, thank you, thank you !! for drawing that version to my attention. I have deleted the other one from my queue and added this one. I was worried even the smallest of the other one would be too big for me. But the largest size on the Junior should work perfectly.
I made Joji’s Cedar Pullover with Shibui Reed 100% linen and it’s my favourite linen top. After washing it was so drapey and soft. I hope that’s the Shibui you have and it turns out the same.

Your shore tee is beautiful! About the purls looking bigger in your garter in the round, I have heard (and it makes sense) that a purl stitch uses more yarn than a knit stitch because of the way you wrap your yarn. You could do combination knitting (wrap your purls the other way so the stitch is mounted backwards, then knit through the back on the next row) and they might match the other garter better.
Thanks so much Brenda. I've heard the same thing but was never actually tried it till now - crazy, huh? It definitely tightens things up. But i am a bit concerned it will muck up my gauge overall so i think for the Clay sweater, I am just going to be a bit more conscious of purling a bit tighter. I think that should be enough. :)
Tash , have a look at the moby sweater junior - the largest size is 33.5 inches. I’ve seen other podcasters make this size with body and sleeve length mods - turned out well .

Thank you so much for all the information its so helpful and a tutorial would be great as I've only after many years of not knitting started again. Always knit with two needles flat and joined everything at the end never did swatches or blocking. What size of a swatch would you recommend before starting your project. Thank you again. I always learn something and get inspired watching you. I have a question, I do not have a lot of experience with hand dyed yarn and alternating yarns. You mentioned with the Sellwood Tee that you will alternate yarn once you start working flat, but didn't while working in the round. Do I only need to alternate yarns when working flat?
Hi Carrie. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I usually only alternate skeins for the last 10 grams of one skein and the first 10 grams of the second. If they are reasonably closely matched, this is usually enough to prevent a line at the change of skeins. It is easy to alternate when knitting flat as you just do it at the end of a row and there will be a pick up or a seam along that line so you never see the edge stitch or any potential puckering or gauge changes that can happen at times. Beautiful job on the Shore tee. I like your ballet neck better than the smaller neck on the pattern. I used to agonize over whether blues or blacks matched when I dressed for work, but they're really hard to match, even if they're part of a 2-piece suit. When I saw the Margaux pattern made up by Those Twins Who Knit, the top is very broad across the front of the shoulders, causing it to bunch in a fold at the front of the arm, because it doesn't seem to be curved in at the front of the armhole. That may also be a function of a stitch that is very stretchy widthwise. The neckline you made on the Shore tee would be lovely on the Margaux top. Do you pick up stitches on a neckline differently along a curve? If you want the neckline to curve toward the body, wouldn't you want fewer stitches in the ribbing there?
Thank you so much Jillian. When i say i pick up "more" stitches on the diagonal, i mean more stitches per row. Just because for the same number of rows, it is longer in length than going up vertical. So it isnt really more sts for the length. I hope that makes sense. :)

Hi Angela. I just knit my swatches flat. My gauge doesnt change enough for me to bother doing them in the round - at least for my tension. Which i am grateful for as it is a pain to do it in the round!
As a very petite woman, I actually buy the Petite Knits Junior patterns and have much better fit

Hi there. For me, i gave up once i started having children. That was a strong motivator as i had all this time off when i was pregnant and then wouldnt smoke around my children. There became less and less opportunity and the desire just faded away.
With alcohol, i had to challenge my beliefs around what i thought it provided. Allen Carr has a number of "Easy Way" to quit books. One on alcohol helped me. Perhaps one on smoking might help you.
Well done on fighting to quit. I fought with alcohol for a long time before i finally quit but i never gave up trying. Finally i got there. For me, i prayed about it a lot as well. Mindfulness around the activity is really important. Thinking about the choice rather than being on auto-pilot. Not sure if any of that helps but good on you for challenging yourself. Never give up trying. You are worth it!

Hi Tash, my ears pricked up when you were talking about your garter stitch rounds on your Clay sweater. I’m knitting the Feldspar top that has the same ridged row and I can’t get rid of the jog when I start the next round. I’ve treated it like stripes but it still looks a mess. Knitting in cotton/linen. How did you handle that please?

The Clay sweater pattern has these slipped stitches on the sides which help to hide the jog at the start of round when you switch stitches. Does the Feldspar top pattern have anything like that?
@@mostlyknitting oh I see what you mean and no the Feldspar has nothing but I’ve looked at all the other photos on Ravelry but apart from a couple who jogged it there seems to be no issue mentioned 🥺 it’s bottom up and now I’m at the armhole and really don’t want to start again. I’m kicking myself for not adding an edge which would have been a easy solution. Feeling really dumb now. I might try possibly fixing it from behind. Really love your podcasts… when you say a yarn is hard on your hands i’m wondering just what you mean. How does it manifest itself with you. Id really like to know as my hands are hurting (one finger and my right thumb) and am wondering if its because ive been knitting with Rowan Cotton Revive and wonder if its causing the pain in my hands.
Hi Elizabeth. That's a great question and I realise I am saying hands but i really mean a number of muscles and joints. My forearms and shoulders seem to cop it the worst due to body tension when there is no or little elasticity in the yarn. My hands also start to ache when i knit with plant materials for too long or if i am knitting something really tight like socks for too long. Switching to a wool blend for a while does the trick as I dont feel any tension when i knit at normal tension on a sweater out of wool or a wool blend. :)
Yes, there is something about cotton that creates extra tension in my hands… not necessarily the rest of my body. I knit English style as I think you do as well and this recent pain seems to be in my left pointer finger and after analysing my movements I use my pointer a lot to guide my right hand needle through the loops…if that makes sense. I wish I could alter my style of knitting however it has served me well as I knit quite quickly with very even stitches…very hard to teach an old dog (71 years and counting) new tricks. Btw…my hands dont hurt while im knitting it more like later in the night. “Suck it up princess” This is what I tell myself !!!!!!! Ha ha ha

If I can recommend something, when you have extra leftover scraps that is causing too much clutter, if they are made of natural materials, you can compost them and bury them with a bit of soil on top in the garden. I’ve done that and I found that eventually the material breaks down and becomes part of the soil. I’ve also done that with knits that I wore out and couldn’t repair.
Or another fun idea may be to make small ornaments like little hats or sweaters for Christmas tree. Or to donate them. That will eat up some leftovers 😊
@LidijasOriginals much better idea. You can also donate to nursing homes and Senior Centers for those that yarn craft. They love it! I also make scrappy socks and Musselburgh Hats with my various leftovers. Lots of uses for it besides burying and wasting perfectly good yarns!
