How Fuel Efficient is a 600cc Motorbike? | Yamaha FZ6

- In a sentence, not very efficient :/ Well firstly that's comparing it to a 125, and they are just next level on fuel, its like they don't even need it, they just sip on the air. Also with this test as I said I went to snake pass 3 times on this tank, and when you're on those kind of roads your mpg consumption is probably drastically lower so I reckon you could easily get 40mpg out of this.
You have to remember its a bike that's like 11 years old so probably not as efficient as the newer bikes, but still for something that can do 0-60 in under 4 seconds, 35-40 mpg isn't too bad :)
The video I did on the 125:

That's not how to work out fuel efficiency... If you filled up again to the top you'd know exactly how much fuel you used over the 144 miles, and it'll be a lot less than the 19.4 litres your tank theoretically holds. Simple maths will then get your miles per litre, or miles per gallon if you prefer.
That's it! Is the proper way to measure fuel consumption. In fact, you can get the fuel efficiency with half a tank or even less, just divide litres or gallons drunk from top tank to top tank by the kms or miles driven (trip 1 at 0 in first topped in tank for instance) since last top tank, and you will get litres/gallons per km/mile. If you want mpg just do the division the other way around :)
You are so right sir + you can also add on how much you push it and how you go on those 15k rpm
Just to add some datapoints: Around town I get 47mpg and when traveling long distance and mostly on motorways 60mpg.
it doesnt matter how old you get, everyone looks over the sweets when they walk into a petrol station
haha, yeah I was kinda keeping an eye on the bike as well cos few dodgy guys walking around
At 320 lbs with gear on, I still get 50+ mpg on my 08 fz6 with almost 50k miles on it... If you're getting 35 you're beating the poop out of it or something isn't happy.
For those still in the dark over FZ6 fuel consumption - at least 50 mpg as long as you don't ride like a total nutjob.
:D this made me laugh
... i think im a nutjob:D
So like ride between 35 to 55 miles per hour, No HWY miles, correct?
@@analyticalhabitrails9857 No. I've sold my FZ6 now but I used to get 56mpg (British gallons) simply by staying below 7k in all the gears. This is an indicated 84 mph/ genuine 78mph in top. These bikes will cruise at 120mph and accelate like a F1 racing car so obv if you're using this potential on the road you're NUTS. I've downsized to a CBR 250 which is great because you can ride like Kevin Shwantz without breaking the law. Plus, it does 80mpg and the back tyre lasts twice as long. Changing tyres is my pet hate because, apart from the cost, you've gotta get the wheel off, put it in the car, take it to the fitting depot etc and that takes up most my day.
FZs are great value fast bikes, I prefer the older version with classic twin clocks. Bit like I say, I'm out of the speed game now. Sorry to bore you with a long essay.
Mine is about 50mpg if ridden in a fuel saving way. Last time I filled up I really pushed it and got 140 something miles out of it. One day I will get a fuel can and ride till it runs out to truly test it. Thing is though I always say ok lets ride in a fuel saving way and then the next thing I know I'm setting off from the traffic light at full throttle or going into lower gear because braaap lol
+Eastern Menace haha yeah exactly, too hard to ride efficiently with these beasts
Love your videos, love your attitude Dan! In the future would love to own a fz6 as well.
You are also right about the theft, it has greatly increased, to a point where the other day my cousins bike got nicked as well.
+Kenneth K Thanks man, and yeah it's getting worse every day :(
Where ?!?
I average a consistent 5 Litres per 100km on my stock 2008 fz6s at 47,000 km's. about 95kg with all gear, 100kg with a bag. Mixed riding, always consistent fuel economy. So i get 300km by the time reserve begins.
Looking to go from my '96 Ninja 250 with a carb to an FZ6S soon... your videos have really helped me get to know the bike more and ensure this is the bike I want. Also like how your content isn't clickbait. Keep it up. I get anywhere from 45-60mpg on my ninja, usually around the 52 mark. I do a lot of city riding and when I'm on the highway I'm buzzing along at ~8-10k rpms though
+Sam Cyanide Thanks man, hope it all works out for ya
Hey! I'm making this same jump and looking at the same exact videos. Ain't that something? Going from a 2005 Ninja 250 to a 2006 FZ6. I'm taking out a loan this week, I'm super stoked.
+Bolverk-GTM awesome dude. I got mine for $2400 (had cash) and I'm loving it. Put 1k miles on it in like a month. what kind of riding do you do? (I.e. city, touring, etc). I also managed to get a 2007 so I don't have the annoying digital tachometer
I live out in pretty much scenic nowhere with a mix of long stretches/highways and some twisty roads. I do a mix of commuting and touring and I have a very spirited riding style. I get the Ninja way down in the corners as it is. City riding happens, but it's very sparse. Commuting is actually a big part of it because most of my commute is on a 55 MPH road that everybody does way more than 55 MPH on. I'd like to be able to keep my safety bubble to and from work. Glad to hear a Ninja 250 owner loves the FZ6.
I got one a week ago, you can wait till the last bar starts flashing, think that means you've got about 18 miles of fuel left.
I'm still on a 125.... I've ran out of fuel twice so far this year 😂 luckily both times right outside the petrol station, think I'll invest in a small fuel can when I finally upgrade to a big boys bike haha
+Richard Downie haha yeah defo gotta be more careful with fuel on these, they go down so quickly
Use my very simple method... Treat 1/4 of a tank left as empty and then fill it up when you get there.
That way you will always have 1/4 of a tank left for if you can't make it to a petrol station for a few miles :)
I’m now on a 600, was getting 75mpg on the 125..... I seem to get about half that now 😂
@@richd9658 I was getting about 80 mpg on a 125 and now get about 60 mpg on my mt 07
But you make music 24/7 Worth it
The Honda NC 750's are as close to a 125 in terms of efficiency. Around 80 mpg. My Kawasaki versys 650 does around 55 - 60 mpg, but it is a twin. 4 cylinders are less efficient. Most petrol cars do 40 - 50 mpg, doesn't explain why motorcycles burn more fuel for smaller engines and lighter weight. I do miss my fuel efficient Honda pcx125 (115mpg).
I guess because bikes are higher rpm which burns more fuel
EinkOLED It's precisely because they're smaller engines with so much power.
It's because bikes are bricks going through the air. If you only went 30 mph or less you would beat (in mpg) a car doing the same. actually at 15 mph is where road friction and air resist are the same, then air resist becomes the major drag.
Always nice to see these mileage videos, helps out figure out running costs of the bikes. Nice video! Can you do a helmet gopro setup video? would be nice to see what setup youre using :)
I do have a full video explaining my setup, look further back on my channel you should see it :)
DanTheTwoWheeler alright bro thanks :) hopefully getting an rc 125 next year :D might start doing motovlogging
FIY thatts now how you do MPG check. You fill the tank to brim and then ride around and fill it up again to brim .. miles you rode between fill up divide that with what ever you put in the tank. you will get the true mpg. Also, if you want more mpgs then stay in lower rpms.
crying looking at the fuel price in 2022
Nice to meet you in RUclips Space 😀👍🏻
+eL&Di yeah man you too :)
I have a FZ6 too.
I get 48mpg while ride around the town or slow traffic. On the other hand, it usually does more than 65mpg (best record does 71mpg) while touring or ride on expressway.
btw We can’t ride on motorway in Taiwan
:(
B.K why not?
I'm sure MPG is an afterthought. But it never comes to mind when getting a bike. My FZ6, Harley Glide or the GS850GX. I'd still have 'em even if they sucked gas. In fact, cruising at 85-90mph, the Harley does. So does the GS.
Also, you guys looking to get the FZ6. They are a great all around bike!. Love it. But I'd aim for the 09 or older. Yamaha reduced the hp and cheapened it up after that. And if you're patient, you can find an 07-09 with low miles. Mine had 14k and looked like brand new.
Honestly not bad, it’s quite similar to my 400
On country roads I'm getting between 50 and 60 mpg. In town it drops to between 40 and 50 mpg. And on the autobahn at 100 mph I'm lucky to get 30 mpg.
when the last block starts to flash you get about 20 miles before it coughs and splutters. I get about 160to 170 miles per tank riding normally and if I spank it I'll only get about 120. Big difference difference
Yeah I think I could have got a few more miles out tbh so I reckon 40mpg at least then :)
There must be something wrong with my fz6 fazer then. Coz it'll do 180 - 190 on tank full easy, well it has for the last 7 years anyway.
What year is your fz6? Is it a honda or yamaha? And what CC??
@@analyticalhabitrails9857 2004 fz6s (600) yamaha. Mind you that comment was 2 years ago before E10 petrol, getting a bit less on that..
i am geting only 240 -250 km with one full load fazer 600 2007 model s1 wity very slow ride swift on 3 -4 k what am i doing wrong?
Usually get 170 miles before my reserve light comes on, have managed to get 220 miles before needing to refuel, on a 650cc (77mpg)
That's pretty damn good, is it a newer bike?
Whaaaat, surely it isn't a sports bike?!
Probably a vtwin, which will always be more efficient than a 4 cylinder n
I get around 120 miles to tank on my suzuki and its usually about £12 to fill and thats a 4 cylinder 600 i ride mainly back roads and some town riding on my journey to work which is 12 miles a day
i usually get 55mpg on my fz6 s2 (slightly changed engine mapping compared to the original fz6, so you get a bit more torque on lower revs as well). i only get 39-40mpg when doing the "spirited riding" :D around 50mpg when touring in the mountains with topbox & sidecases packed. try to put back the db killer to save on fuel. i noticed that whenever i remove those, i tend to forget shifting up in each gear just for the sake of pure eargasm
+dan t haha yeah I've got my dB killer in, might just be because it's a bit older :/
35-40 is still a huge difference. i rode 340km last saturday and still had around 1.5L in the tank (and pipes). maybe you could also check how hot your brake disks are after a few miles. maybe you'll just need to clean the calipers to let them move away easier from the disks :) i do that every year during the winter break :)
wow 55mpg , I did on full tank 2008 s2 just 133 miles, very poor and looking now for reason, when I push hard the bike I do 115 mils per tank
I would really like to see you doing a 2014-2020 Honda CB500, or if anyone else knows the actual real world fuel tank range....Not the claimed or maths sum version thankyou, i can easily work that out from the specs.
Well is not that bad, because You fuel reserve is near 5 litres. So You only consume just 14 litrers of petrol. IT has a decent fuel consumption. 5.5-6 liters per 100 km in doors and on backroads and highway somewhere between 4.5 to 5.5 liters per/100 km. Now You do the math in mpg.
👍🏼
Ahaha you ain’t wrong about that area. My 125 nearly got nicked 1 minute from where you was in the start. Cant have motorbikes in salford 😂
Yeahh unfortunately lot of theft and joyriding going on round there
Interesting, my old xj600 diversion gets avg 52mpg I'm an old git ride on country roads between 50-60 mph with the occasional sprint up to 80mph, it's my little despatch bike 😂
my dad has got a 1000cc aprillia tuono and it gets 50mpg and thats got pretty fast so that 600cc is pretty terrible for mileage and fuel economy
My YZF 125 chuggsss petrol man I get like 140 miles out of it , is that normal?
Wouldn't have lasted the 300 miles I just did on the 125 then :P Did use a tank and half.
Mind I bet its way more comfortable for long journeys for sure!
If you're comparing it to a 125, it's always going to be terrible i guess. With that said, I dread to think what a litre bikes mpg is like lol. My street triple averages around the 42mpg mark so don't be to downhearted about it.
Doesn't that bike have a detuned R6 engine? And if so, how hard would it be to put that engine in an R6 to have on an A2 license?
Why not just buy an fz6?
Sam Cyanide cos it looks shit?
I think they look better than most sports bikes. Each to their own.
Neither the R6 or the Fz6 are legal for the A2. Only one really detuned version of the Fz6, with something around 75 hp, was legal for the A2. Fz6 and R6 are above the 70kW limit (when unrestricted) for the A2, yes, it is a shame...
How do you decide what octane to put in if there’s no sign indicating which each pump dispenses. That looks a bit confusing. I suppose you just have to guess based on what I’m watching. I watched the video to see how many bars the gas gauge had when full, you failed me there. Also watched to see which octane and you failed me there. Thanks, cheers.
Apologies for failing you my friend, I'll be forever in your debt
@@DanTheTwoWheeler haha no worries 🤣🤣
Wow did not realize fuel in the UK was that pricey. Simple math shows $5.65 USD per gallon which I paid $3.20 a gallon for 91 a few days ago. If I did the reverse math that would be like 65p/liter vs. The 114.9p/l displayed on the pump. Interesting. No wonder there are so many motorcycles over there lol
In Europe we don't have 91. It starts from 96 octane.
You should shoulder check more :)
I have fz6n 06" and day ago i got 2.1L/100km speed was around 80-100km/h
thats immposible !
alamäkeen? 🤣 mulla kyllä juo mutta yleensä silti 300km tankillisel pääsee jos tarkotuksella ajelee säästeliäästi
12 pound for 10 litres those were the days. It cost me nearly 15 quid for 9 litres now.
Everything's gone up these days 😭
@@DanTheTwoWheeler You act like a english pussy at that garage. Shame on your country
I ride the FZ6R as a daily commuter and average 41mpg consistently. I would imagine the FZ6 and FZ6R should get similar mileage.
I've gotten 50 average with mine if I'm just putting to work. But I hang in high revs more often than not so meh smiles per gallon
Thought it was just me on a 600 guess I got some habits I need to fix lol
😄
How much does fuel cost regularly for you?
"Dodgy-Looking Guys"..sounds about right for these areas (Collectively) lol:)....
Im dodgy lòokin fucker wi ma helmet off dosnt mean im going to hi jack yer bike.just had a hard time wi drugs till i fell in love with bikes.dont judge a book by its cover.if we judged u on your bike u would be the cheap dodgy fucker.lost a sub .lmao
Must admit this left some bitterness when I heard him saying. Like judging books by their cover... I mean what could go wrong man, you are on a petrol station... that's so insulting to other people and so undergrown...
Not to mention that the bike in question is out of thiefs' sight for obvious reasons.
What were you imagining? They'd slap your helmet and nick this cheap bike? Ridiculous...
y’all gotta go inside to pay for the gas after you fuel? what other than cameras is stopping you from just driving away
A moral code...
I usually fill up a fiver at a time which is about a gallon and that gets me 60 miles on a 650 around town. However I doubt that'll scale up if I go on some nice roads!
haha yeah that's it once you get onto the proper roads, mpg goes whoooop way down :)
Nice to meet you yesterday Dan! Very cool videos :) just in case you forgot, we are doing a collab with me playing guitar on the back of your bike haha!! joke joke
+AnkushJainMusic haha nah man I'm sure we can collaborate on something, I might need a backing track for a video one day. If I ever come down to London again, I'll see if you're free 😊
Haha ok sure, let me know when you're next in London! Until then, take care :)
is that salford at the beginning??
I still wonder how you got 270 miles out of your 125. I get to 220-230 and I think "Oh shit, I really need petrol". Teach me your ways dude!
+Anthony Cooper haha is that how many I got?!? No idea tbh, they are just really good engines in them Yamaha's
I could get even up to 350 miles on single 17 litres full tank of Unleaded 95 on my 124cc based on Honda's CG125 engine. Now with FZ6 Fazer S2 around town I am getting 180 miles out of 19.4 litres tank, not even racing it...
My new Suzuki GN 125, ridden from the dealers with the obligatory full tank, tripped 300 kms when it hit reserve, so that was 8.5 liters to fill her back up to full. So it was 1.86 gallons which worked out at a handy 186 miles. Since the front sprocket is a fourteen tooth one and the gearing is Asian which means for three kids and the wife, along with a sidecar. I ordered a sixteen tooth front sprocket which should give me over 125 per gallon. Since I was running it in and kept the speed down to 80ks, at 500 k it seems a lot freer , and I put high octane in as the dealer used the cheap stuff so next time I do a range test after the sprocket change it should be interesting, as I am just riding normaly.
what type of gasoline do you use?
I get 100 ish mile to a full tank on my 600 always looking for a filling station allways on the top up
Hmm, tank must be smaller than mine then :/
But you still had something left in the tank when you filled up so it's the amount you put in since last that counts, not the tank capacity.
6.7L/100km
DOES IT HAS ABS AND GEAR IN INDICATOR?
No abs and the gear indicator was added on tbh
that tank would cost 25 quid today lol
Whyyyy 😩
It`s OK for a 4 cylinder 98 horsepower bike.
Of course i have yamaha fz6 n Black body 98 cv and MIVV esaust sorry for my English 😤
It’s a 4 cylinder 75 hp bike
In my country also 98 hp horsepower, and it has the nickname of “Hornet killer”. In fact it’s top speed is the same of MT09
@@davijow200 it's 98 hp don't confuse kW with hp
ive got an 05 fz6 and on a full tank of fuel i get 200 miles easily.. this bike has a modified exhaust which means you normally have to re-jet the carbs and air intake. but sine the bike is injection the system will do it itself.. i have a stock exhaust and i piss 200 miles on a full tank... in other words.. leave the fekkin thing alone
£1.15 a litre. Take me back 😅
Ikr 😭
it might have been tho
Why don't you use vpower
+elias S More expensive, never really looked into justifying the extra cost
You shouldn’t ever be putting cheap fuel into any bike. That stuff is for cars not motorcycles. If you can’t afford the extra 20p per liter get a car😂
Its not wh3n you and yo boi carving roads!!
That is appalling, my MT07 can give me on average between 55 and 60 easily. That is in the town riding and all. 4 cyls are just so inefficient to be honest and not that torquee as twins. Had a Fazer 600, it just drank the fuel and again it was a carbed version. Never again. lol.
I have a 2016 CBR500 (twin) and riding legally I get consistently over 90mpg... Not as torquey as a MT-07 though.
I would never trade my 2009 Fz6 for a 2020 MT07, Ever.
Different tastes and opinions, but the MT07 exhales cheap stuff in every angle.
I am sure it is fun to ride but put it side by side with my bike and you will change your opinion. Bear in mind that your bike carries a 14 liter gas tank and mine a 19.4 L.
