Sooo helpful!! I thought my guy was either dumb or untrainable!! I watch others play fetch with envy... but we do have fun playing catch inside the home. When he's proud of his catch and feeling playful, he'll come back to me with a giant smile, but then hide to "eat" his ball or toy. Definitely doesn't like to share!
This video brings back so many good memories of my ridgeback, sadly she passed this year but seeing how these dogs played reminded me of her so thank you
I so enjoy your videos and seeing your absolute devotion to your Ridgeback‘s. Penny and Zero have such a unique relationship. And it was fun in this video seeing how their friend, who actually does fetch, fits into the equation. What fun!
For me it was the same thing with my Old English Sheepdog. He would follow the tennis ball as it was rolling but when it stopped he would just walk away. He would chase and bark at RC cars but fetch was beyond him. He was lovable but can't say that he was dumb as a rock because he would sometimes be outwitted by a rock. I miss him.
My ridgeback (Indy) was not into playing fetch with a ball but one day we came across a soft frisbee and he LOVES playing fetch with it. he has gotten so great at it that he catches it while its still in the air all the time now. everyone who sees him doing it is so impressed by how fast he is!
My dog who recently passed was a Labrador x Ridgeback and was terrible at fetch too! It was a few years ago that he stopped playing with balls and I almost forgot a few good memories. Thank you very much for this video
I always find it fascinating at you produce videos that look incredible, the narration is top notch, and never seem to run out of great ideas to talk about, keep up the great work thanks for all you do
Everything in this video is so true. My Ridgeback can catch pretty well though. I love how they always crouch down low and stare at each other for a while before running and playing. Mine does that with the neighbor Ridgeback when they play together too.
'ridgeback sit!' "OK ill sit on you" 'ridgeback paw' "OK ill punch your hand as hard as I can" 'here!' "no, you come here and I'll hop up and down like a kangaroo"
haha I laughed SO hard watching this as my Rhodesian sleeps lazily on the couch beside me. Luka is clumsy to the fullest regard until it's time to play with his best friend and neighbor dog, Bowser-- he's quick and majestic. But fetch, is.not.happening and this video truly speaks to what it looks like when Luka is tossed ANYTHING to fetch. He actually turns to jello and flops all over the place; all 100+lbs of him. I love your videos and blog!! I've come to reference your products you recommend quite a bit, and without fail, they've come in handy when we adopted Luka and had little to no experience with Ridgies. He's my greatest research study, and my very best friend.
I have a part ridgeback part catahoula that I adopted from a rescue. She actually likes catching frisbees. She will sort of bring them back. Normally gets them within about 15 feet before dropping them and making me go get them. She also loves tug of war. A really smart dog. My family has owned dogs my whole life, but this one and my last one were both rescues. I may be imagining it but both seem smarter than most of my purebreds.
So true!! My 2 Ridgis catch pretty well, but bringing back the ball is not a concept they understand! Chasing the dog that will fetch the ball is one of their favorite games too.
I thought this was just our two Ridgebacks. But we did the same, threw anything (expecting no retrival) until they gave up and played with each other 😅🙈
For our first three RRs this video is spot on! However our most recent "Luke," can catch and fetch with amazing athleticism. Did not teach him that. He just loves it.
We kept Ridgebacks from 1980 - 2018 when we lost our last one. Ridgebacks don't fetch, we had a Lab for that. Ridgebacks are sighthounds, show them a hare or a deer and watch them go. Obviously ours never caught one, but got some serious exercise in the process.
Yep. My Ridgeback will go get it and bring it to me 3 or 4 times. After that he just looks at me after I throw it as if he's saying "What's the problem here...why do you keep throwing it away after I bring it back to you?"
Basenjis are so similar just a smaller package. They won’t try and jump and grab the ball out of the air though lol they will just watch it hit the ground then attack. Great video!
I went from a Labrador retriever to a Rhodesian Ridgeback this video was hilariously true! Any time I throw my RR's toy she looks at me like "Why?" then stops playing with me!!! Hahahaha!!
Love your video. And your dogs are beautiful. I could always recognize a Ridgeback by the hair on their backs. Most people I’ve met don’t know their breed, but I always try to learn as many breeds as I can. Dogology is my favorite field of study-just for fun. However, I have three Shelties. Their main qualities are being blabber mouths-if you call that a quality. Lol. Love ‘em all!
All true. So imagine our surprise Will when our ridgie Archer,at about a year old decided that he loved fetch! We couldn’t believe it,but he really took to the command “bring it back” and would happily fetch a favourite soft toy for a solid 10 mins at a time. He’s nearly 5 now and sometimes will still consent to a brief game if l ask and if he’s in the mood 😆
Ya...my RR Daisy renamed fetch to... grab and run like hell in the opposite direction😞🤪😭 So I had to succumb to her and run from her. That's only way to get her to come...lol
We have two Hungarian Vizsla boys, and they are EXACTLY the same. It’s crazy how many similarities they have between them, after all Ridgebacks were bred from Vizslas.
Yes a mix of many breeds over time said to include khoikhoi, Danes, pointers, large terrier breeds, greyhound, etc. They were not bred from vizslas as stated
You are correct. Wikipedia is my source, not the 20+ years I have been in the breed. I have zero knowledge about the breed that was apparently bred from vizslas per a ridgeback expert on RUclips.
As always an awesome video 👍my RR chase is exactly the same hes few sandwiches short of a picnic though... BUT hes ace at finding ways to warrant a trip to the vet.. running into fences, zoomies into French doors, eating non food items... 🤦♀️🤦♀️ BUT hes our idiot and love him to bits 🤣💓
Ooohhh, I've got one, and just spoke about this with my neighbor yesterday. I find too, asking my ridgeback to sit, or laying down on command, she knows and will do It, but say not like my Golden Retriever I had, whom loved to obey every command, my ridgeback will after 3 times go like nah, I've sat/laid down perfectly every time you asked, you know I can do It, what's the purpose of this? 😂😂😂 I'm thrilled I came across this video ❤❤❤
i have female ridgeback without ridge, i found her left on the street to die, I and my fiance were searching the owner for two weeks, hoping that we vill not find, but failed and in the end, we got the information from a guy who saw the moment when she was dumped from a car. now she is almost 8 years old and i love her so much that i can't bealive how much I love her. she is the best dog i ever had. smart, gentle, obedient, protective ...... i m planning to buy one more also female...
lolol, i love it! My RR is actually a great fetch player, as well as a goalie in our soccer activities, he is an amazing goalie and will 99.9% catch and block any ball that goes his way. But now that i thing about it, my RR is a poor fetcher for his treats, it's as if his eyes are closed when i throw a treat for him. Now his Lab brother, he's the king of treat fetching!
Hey man just a quick question. Do you recommend neutering your male ridgebacks? We were speaking to the vets and he's not going to be used for breeding but we don't want to lose his character but we don't know if it will or not. If you could reply even with just a brief reason why/why not to that would be fantastic. Love your videos by the way and your dogs are gorgeous!
It's a nuanced question so I wrote this post which hopefully can help you feel confident with whatever decision you make - markingourterritory.com/2018/09/26/when-should-you-spay-or-neuter-a-rhodesian-ridgeback/
Great video - they're not making the baseball team that's for sure. Maybe pinch runner haha. I'm a simple guy, fetch is my favorite way to bond with my dogs. I think my girl now wouldn't mind the escorts XD
I have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Eric and Ruud. Eric is a master at catching balls and will run all day If we keep throwing the ball. Ruud isn’t interested tho and will just play with other dogs
Dude this is scary how true it is... i have 5 month RR puppy and he is the worst at playing fetch. He just chases the ball and leaves it. Only thing he brings back are tug ropes.
My first dog was a Ridgeback and he could catch anything. Especially food. When HE wanted to play fetch he would bring it back. Balls, Sticks and sometimes frisbees. He was EXTREMELY prey driven so I didn't lure corse him because if it wasn't alive it wasn't worth chasing. But my boy could catch.LOL
I was wondering why Bane, my Ridgeback, seems to completely grasp the idea of chase but struggles on the returning aspect of everything I throw. I noticed Zero is awfully skinny in the stomach compared to my male Ridgey. I thought he is a healthy weight at 100lbs even but he does seem to tire easily on long runs which I've thought is strange for a breed that is supposed to cover 30 miles easily at a horse's pace. Has anyone else experienced this as well? Do I need to regulate his eating more strictly?
I'm going to put together a video about this, because many people (myself included) aren't taught how to know what the healthiest weight for their dog is. All dogs should have a tuck/taper at their waists, with their back two ribs just visible under a thin layer of fat. Every dog's body has a unique shape, but the tuck should be present regardless. I find this graphic helpful - docs.google.com/viewer?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.morrisanimalfoundation.org%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Ffilesync%2FPurina-Body-Condition-System.pdf As for the endurance running thing, the other part of the story is that Ridgebacks have been bred larger than the original breed standard. Plenty of people will argue whether that's bad or good, but regardless it means a reduction in their ability as endurance runners. Zero is just shy of 100 lbs and incredibly fit, but can't match Penny's endurance. She's a runt, but she's actually closer to the breed's ideal working fitness than Zero is. For me it's not a bad or good thing, just different.
OMG, I have to laugh.... I stumbled upon your video and it spoke to me. My son had a ridgeback and he just did not have a clue about fetch.... I had never known of a dog who would not fetch and bring back to play.... but , NOPE, not this dog........ soooo funny
Haaa ! That's funny... I LOVE LABS , and retrieving is hardwired into them...but a Ridgeback is STILL an awesome dog....a beautiful example of nature and nurture....
I learned something new today about Ridgebacks. They aren’t wired right for catching. Careful tossing them that piece of cheese in the kitchen. You’ll need to wipe the floor each time. Lol

Love your videos and narration. Your love for your four legged children is so sweet. And penny and zero are beautiful!
Yes. I love these dogs. You have no idea how your videos helped
You have no idea
I so enjoy your videos and seeing your absolute devotion to your Ridgeback‘s. Penny and Zero have such a unique relationship. And it was fun in this video seeing how their friend, who actually does fetch, fits into the equation. What fun!
Oh my god relating to this on a primal level hahahaha
The ridgeback owner walk of shame! Couldn't have put it better!
I miss him.
Absolute perfection. Their "pounce" position is my favorite thing. Great stuff as usual!
My ridgeback (Indy) was not into playing fetch with a ball but one day we came across a soft frisbee and he LOVES playing fetch with it. he has gotten so great at it that he catches it while its still in the air all the time now. everyone who sees him doing it is so impressed by how fast he is!
I just love all your videos and adventures you guys all have. I get my new baby Boone in 6 weeks and can’t wait to start our adventures together!
Thanks! Enjoy that new puppy smell for us and give Boone a few extra hugs
That’s so interesting. They are so cute and funny trying to catch. That would endear me to them right away.
My dog who recently passed was a Labrador x Ridgeback and was terrible at fetch too! It was a few years ago that he stopped playing with balls and I almost forgot a few good memories. Thank you very much for this video
You are sooo right, my girl Kimba has taught me to fetch. I thought it was just her not wanting to fetch 🤷♀️you’re videos are great, thank you
Spot on! You guys always makes me smile. We obviously need another one
I taught my ridgeback how to catch treats and balls but at first she was literally just standing still like your ridgebacks it’s hilarious
I always find it fascinating at you produce videos that look incredible, the narration is top notch, and never seem to run out of great ideas to talk about, keep up the great work thanks for all you do
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement - glad you enjoy the videos!

'ridgeback sit!' "OK ill sit on you"

'here!' "no, you come here and I'll hop up and down like a kangaroo"
TheOracle OMG SO RELATABLE WITH MY RIDGEBACK
I have a rhodesian ridgeback dog . His name is cooper
These are the greatest dogs but they need exercise. I saw your video of running up and down the stairs.
No one has these dogs. They
They run.
Never a more True RR dogumentary ..... and I'm so glad it's not just mine.
haha I laughed SO hard watching this as my Rhodesian sleeps lazily on the couch beside me. Luka is clumsy to the fullest regard until it's time to play with his best friend and neighbor dog, Bowser-- he's quick and majestic. HILARIOUS!!! They are a brilliant pair to commentate the lives of... another great watch. Thanks!
I manage to teach Misha, my Rhodesian Ridgeback with 5 month, to fetch and bring me the ball. So amazing.
Love your videos... do more.
Brought back fond memories of my Mike and J D!
I’ve tried to explain this to sooo many people! Great video!
So true!! My 2 Ridgis catch pretty well, but bringing back the ball is not a concept they understand! Chasing the dog that will fetch the ball is one of their favorite games too.
Man, something has never hit home so much with that owner walk of shame....hahaha
Exact same story with my ridgeback xD
I realy enjoy your videos. Keep it up.
I thought this was just our two Ridgebacks. But we did the same, threw anything (expecting no retrival) until they gave up and played with each other 😅🙈
I feel like this fetch-blindness should be in the breed standard
For our first three RRs this video is spot on! However our most recent "Luke," can catch and fetch with amazing athleticism. Did not teach him that. He just loves it.
I love this episode😍 your dogs are beautiful
Not only are they the seals of dogs, they are also good bois

When my older son was born, I researched and decided a Rhodesian Ridgeback would be the next family dog. Couldn't have made a more perfect choice.
Yep. My Ridgeback will go get it and bring it to me 3 or 4 times. After that he just looks at me after I throw it as if he's saying "What's the problem here...why do you keep throwing it away after I bring it back to you?"

My dog is half Ridgeback - THIS IS EXACTLY LIKE HIM !!!!! Thanx for your video.
I’m sorry but this is the cutest video on the entire planet. I thought it was just my ridgeback lol guess it’s all of them huh.
My Ridgy fetches the bal, it's his hobby... and a Great toon to Tire hij out hehe
I went from a Labrador retriever to a Rhodesian Ridgeback this video was hilariously true! Any time I throw my RR's toy she looks at me like "Why?" then stops playing with me!!! Hahahaha!!
Charming as always!

I have a 7 month ridgeback/plott and she is in love with tennis balls. She plays fetch and catches the ball just fine 🤷♀️
She must take after the plott side of her family tree!
Belgian Malinois are exactly the same lol. They chase a ball or stick before running off to chew it in isolation/leave it in some obscure place.
Perfect. This made me laugh out loud! Although my boy can catch before running off...
i feel vindicated haha. so accurate!
I so get that. I laughed my a## off
Good video. Have had German Shepherds all my life. But considering a R.R. next.
I grew up with riggies and I have had no luck whatsoever. All 5 of our dogs 🙈
ridgebacks hunt lions
me: thinking about the one at my dog park that gets scared and hides when I move the wrong way
My ridgeback will fetch twice. Then, “ok you go get it now”
Ya...my RR Daisy renamed fetch to... grab and run like hell in the opposite direction😞🤪😭
So I had to succumb to her and run from her. That's only way to get her to come...lol
my ridgeback named Marley is good at fetch I thought him the concept since he was nine weeks
Great doggies. Great owner.
I'm about to loose my RR to cancer. We've had 8.5 good years with him.
We have two Hungarian Vizsla boys, and they are EXACTLY the same. It’s crazy how many similarities they have between them, after all Ridgebacks were bred from Vizslas.
Um, not sure where that info came from but that is incorrect
Ridgebacks were originally bred from African hunting dogs and a mix of European breeds.
Yes a mix of many breeds over time said to include khoikhoi, Danes, pointers, large terrier breeds, greyhound, etc. They were not bred from vizslas as stated
Wikipedia isn’t the only source of information in the world you know.
You are correct. Wikipedia is my source, not the 20+ years I have been in the breed. I have zero knowledge about the breed that was apparently bred from vizslas per a ridgeback expert on RUclips.
Hahaha. I thought it was just ours too. Ziggy and Biko will tug but no catching at all 😂😂

Amazing video! I laughed so hard!
😂😂😂😂😂😂 You are so right! Our RR loved to play fetch with our Whippet. A perfect combo. Love your Vid.
i have female ridgeback without ridge, i found her left on the street to die, I and my fiance were searching the owner for two weeks, hoping that we vill not find, but failed and in the end, we got the information from a guy who saw the moment when she was dumped from a car. now she is almost 8 years old and i love her so much that i can't bealive how much I love her. she is the best dog i ever had. smart, gentle, obedient, protective ...... i m planning to buy one more also female...
So true! Our RR/GSheppard can track and chase like mad but retrieving is just not something that ever occurs to him.
lolol, i love it! My RR is actually a great fetch player, as well as a goalie in our soccer activities, he is an amazing goalie and will 99.9% catch and block any ball that goes his way. Oh man, do I win a free sandwich or something at 10,000!? Have to get a few more subs ASAP
So true!! I see this every day again. Mine is so clumsy
My ridgeback doesn’t do fetch he just looks at the ball after it’s thrown but he is great at catching

I have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Eric and Ruud. Eric is a master at catching balls and will run all day If we keep throwing the ball. Ruud isn’t interested tho and will just play with other dogs

Its better have one Rhrodesian ridgeback or two. Couple or two males or two females?
This is so funny. As someone totally immersed in the working aussie world... this is totally new to me lmao
You should throw an L1A1 SLR version of an FN FAL, and see if they perform any better.
They do the same thing with snow balls, provided you can get them out the door in winter.
I think Ridgebacks have figured out fetch is a stupid game. My Ellie loved chasing after and chewing sticks.
I was wondering why Bane, my Ridgeback, seems to completely grasp the idea of chase but struggles on the returning aspect of everything I throw. please make a vlog type video of ' a day in the life of a RR"
What a time it was...
Is he drooling?
*RHODESIANS NEVER DIE*
Hilarious! So much like my Malamute! It seems like they get along with other dogs better, however.
"just breaks their brain". All dog owners have experienced that in one way or another.
I can completely relate. Fetch doesn’t happen with rhodies. But they are the best breed ever!!
I’m in Albuquerque NM. I’ve just heard them called that. I have three of them.
They simply are not a "fetch" dog otherwise they are the best pal by far .
Great video
I learned something new today about Ridgebacks. They aren’t wired right for catching. Careful tossing them that piece of cheese in the kitchen. You’ll need to wipe the floor each time. Lol
My first rr’s idea of fetch was running to get the ball/toy then sitting wherever it landed.
Our new girl is only 11 weeks and is a fetch machine - with zero training. Quite shocking, actually
Spot on.
This is the truest thing ever haha
Such truth.
Lol! So true! Great video!
Mine loves to play fetch and she's great at catch 😜
@Gillian Vann no pure breed 😜 she just loves to chase things and found out if she brings the ball back we throw it again and she loves to run. Over time she got good at catching the ball too.
True too
Well done
Haha, I feel like I just watched my two RR's. If it's possible to have negative interest in fetch, that's what they have.
