At the age of 26, when he ascended to the throne, Sultan Suleiman aimed to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, he became the greatest warrior and ruler of both East and West.
The young Suleiman received news of his succession to the throne during a hunting party in 1520. Unaware that he would be ruling a reign beyond his dreams, he left behind his wife son and took to the road with his close friend and companion Pargali Ibrahim to reach the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. As they started their journey overland, an Ottoman ship set sail from Crimea in the Black Sea, bringing female slaves as gifts for the Ottoman palace… On this ship was Alexandra La Rossa, the daughter of a Ukrainian Orthodox minister, taken away from her family and sold to the Crimean palace. She had no idea that she would become Hurrem, wife of Sultan Suleiman and mother of princes, ruling the empire with him through bloodshed and intrigue.
As Sultan Suleiman conquered the world, his great passion for Hurrem would clash with his love for and trust in his closest friend and advisor, Grand Vizier Pargali Ibrahim, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

@@barkaatahmed8137 Maybe she's too pampered back then. No rival, beloved by valide and sisters-in-law, mother of the Sultan's eldest son. Hurrem has so much obstacles during her early years, so she must used her brain from the beginning or she will ended in Bosphorus sea.

Because she wanted to rule and power. Here she has that.

Mahidevran was a jealous person with no humility or kindness in her bones. She only knew to make enemies out of ppl and control her son's life

Honestly, Mahidevran looks great in every shot this time, it has to be said. (I have a soft spot for the more relaxed look she dons with the red gown, however, I'll admit.)

Mahidevran in real life was actually mature ,ottoman historians who wrote about Mustafa wrote that his court was not less magnificent than his father , not a single prince ever had in empire and the credit goes to mahidevran, she was much better in his son place . Even hurrem got actual power after mahidevran left and ayse died in real life. Also in real life those imperial things never happened which they showed in series to show mahidevran dumb or hurrem smart . Mahidevran enjoyed her life and respected alot after she left the capital.

To be fair, out of all the "that's not how it went..." that occurred in the series, Hürrem being so clever doesn't really factor among them. That neither herself, nor Mahidevran, got to be depicted as nearly politically astute as both were in real life does irk me, though. Particularly as, for some reason, we're not allowed to see Mahidevran give truly good, solid life advice to her son until both of them left the harem. It feels like the writer's took the tale of the supposed beating that occurred to base their view of Mahidevran's character around and then just ran with it in some odd ways.

Helena deserved better 👏! Honestly, almost _all_ of Mustafa's love interests did. Instead of making up romantic rivals for Hürrem, the writers could've turned to the intrigues of the various princely harems and had why better narration and drama.

Helena was so pure-hearted. She fell in love with Mustafa long before she knew he was a prince. She's probably the only woman who loved him for his personal qualities, not for his status, power or wealth. And she was so unhappy during the brief time she spent at the harem. She really deserved better.

@@cherylpiorkowski Honestly, that's a really good point, particularly when Helena's more organic relationship with Mustafa is juxtaposed with Fatma being more attracted to what he can offer her. There are so many storylines with Mustafa's love interests where we see these really well set up narratives that just...go nowhere.

@@Redluna32Honestly my biggest problem with the Helena story line is that the writers clearly expect us to ignore that Mustafa has destroyed her life. The only chance she'd have at good marriage is if she and possibly her whole family make as far away from Manisa as possible. Because if she stays any where near Manisa she's just going to be that girl the sehzade used and tossed away.

    • @cherylpiorkowski

@@Redluna32 Agreed, so many of those interesting storylines were discarded for no reason. I really liked the storyline about that Italian noblewoman who briefly became Mustafa's mistress (I can't remember her name) and whose younger sister was a concubine in Mustafa's harem. It could've been a terrific plot but instead, the writers just forgot about it at some point.

@@CrimsonAngelWinges I was thinking the same thing! During the farewell scene with Helena, Mahidevran told her not to worry about her future, because she and her parents would be provided for. It's such a hypocritical and naive attitude in my opinion. Even with all the gold in the world, Helena could never find a husband now that everyone knows she's been a concubine in the Prince's harem. Most men of that time and country would want to marry a "pure" girl. Helena would never be considered as an acceptable wife. As you said, she and her family would need to relocate somewhere else and start a new life. Mustafa ruined that poor girl's life and reputation for no reason. And the whole "can't get married without the Sultan's permission" thing ended up being useless anyway, since Mustafa still married Mihrunnisa in secret later in the series.

"What would my father do in my place" - of course, Hürrem's and Helena's cases are pretty similar and Süleyman is a hypocrite a little bit, but there is ONE very important difference: Süleyman is a sultan, Mustafa - one of the shehzades!
