okay I came back to watch this because I just saw this Q and A with Jensen where he said that for some reason, this scene got him really emotional and after the first take he had to walk down the road to calm down because he couldn't stop crying and he felt like he had a knot in his stomach. Keep that in mind...
It's hard to think about Hell, and what it's like, when I do I just wanna scream and cry because there are real people down there and they are always going to be down there forever literally so I understand why he had to calm down
+LynnH 1223 and soul punk You can see Jensen talk about this scene in various convention Q&A videos. Just RUclips things like "Jensen Ackles emotional scene" and you'll get several results of him speaking specifically about this scene.
This scene and the intensity of the emotions between these two brothers is why this show is so great and why it's lasted 10 seasons. Their great acting, writing, and behind the scenes magic that takes place is amazing!

I remember this scene, but after watching Jensen talk about it, how he got genuinely emotional and had to walk it off before continuing filming, makes it even more poignant and reduced me to tears too - I really love this guy!
He's strong. I mean, the guy lost his mother and hunted for a living. Hunted things that usually appear in nightmares. Then lost his father but kept his head up for his brother and fought even harder. He's the DEFINITION of strong.
That reaction by Jared at 3:08 when he turns and looks at Jensen. Anyone notice how Jared was so surprised by him? Like this scene was emotionally powerful and I think Jared got surprised by Jensen
What breaks my heart is seeing Dean break down. He's such a strong and amazing man, and nothing will ever torture him more than the fact that he ever had ANY part in the torture of anyones soul. He will forever blame himself for accepting the offer to stop the torture - even though 30 years of getting your skin ripped from your bones again and again is more than anyone would ever be able to handle. Sammy knows that too. Still the most emotional and moving moment in Supernatural.
When he was filming this Jensen was actually, genuinely sobbing. He couldn't stop and had to walk it off before coming back to film again. Truly an incredible actor.
Unfortunately, no. I was key grips assistant and present during this scene, the tears are hardly ever real. That's not to say his acting wasn't brilliant!
this scene broke my heart, and watching this again after Jensen said that these tears were real, and even though they'd stopped filming the scene, he couldn't stop crying. this makes it so much more heartfelt
those tears were real, jensen who plays dean said his body reacted in a way of of like or your upset lets keep crying so he walked down the road and walked it off.
Roha Yousaf lol, but yea its happened to both jensen and jared before, happened to Jared during croatoan when he got infected and was telling dean to leave him behind, so the producer i think came over and said "Jared, its fine, your great but try to not let your emotions get ahead of acting, just walk it off." something like that.
At the very beginning I start laughing because Sammy is like "Dean, I'm damn curious" and you can hear the note of pride because he just swore like Dean and he's just really proud of himself and then I start crying because DEAN
I feel like this show really downplayed the fact he was supposed to be there for 40 years. He would not be like he was when he returned, he would be nothing like his old personality, considering the time he spent in the pit was longer than his lifespan at the point he got to there, and it was under extreme, unimaginable circumstances. He would not be happy to see his car and call it baby. He would resent Sam for leaving him alone. He would not value any moral guidelines that exist on Earth anymore. He would just be an insane lunatic.
stalk8r Winchesters are made of sturdier stuff than most....That goes tripple for Sammy, quadruple for Dean and as for the Old man....well lets just say He's the toughest son of a bitch the Almighty has on record....so don't think you can Psyco-analyse any one of them cause you would go Mental in a heart beat if you spent even one day swimming in the shit storm these guys call their Reality....I would too.
iqtyrus Well he said that he tortured other souls for 10 years and that would make ANYONE go insane and get destroyed on the inside. But I guess he's good at hiding it.
stalk8r That's how I felt at first, and I still think they should have made it more of a big deal, but I think maybe Dean sort of sees it as a dream. Like he can remember every bit of it, but he feels like it didn't actually happen. It's like waking up from a terrifying nightmare and going, "Wow, at least it wasn't real," except in Dean's case, it was real. That's how I think of it now. But in the end I agree that the writers should have made it worse than they did, because the way they did it in the show makes it so that Hell isn't even that much of a big deal. I think Supernatural has a wee problem with that sort of thing in a lot of cases
I don't think that's true. That would be true if he came back from a human hell. This is a different, unimaginable kind of hell. I'm sure feeling the worst pain on Earth is sweet compared to even the lightest touch of Alistair's blade in hell
When you see a man like this show this amount of emotion and tears streaming down his face it leads you to believe that he actually went through what he went through. He is not the crying emotional type of guy. This scene really showed his acting ability and vulnerabilty. In that scene I could not take my eyes off of him. That was the most powerful scene in the series so far. It made me realize just how much I loved this show.
Such an amazing scene every time. I saw an interview with them where they said if the writers wrote “Sam cries” or “dean breaks down” they had them change it to “gets emotional” and instead let the scene dictate it. Cause sometimes crying didn’t feel right for the moment or other times it didn’t call for tears but in that moment it felt right and they cried. So a lot of these are at the actors discretion. To me that makes the scene even more beautiful because a lot of these were the actors getting so into character that they’d let them take over
The fact that Jensen cried real tears while playing the role really speaks to how emotional this scene really is. He has to play the part of someone who's gone to Hell and back. He has to play the part of someone for faced endless torture for what was 30 years in Hell, and someone who spent the last 10 years in Hell inflicting his pain onto other souls. Seeing this made me cry like a baby because of how much hurt you see in Dean's eyes while telling his brother the things he experienced and the things he did. Goddamn this show is awesome
Why has this show and these actor not won an Emmy? They put their heart and soul into every episode with very little recognition from the industry. We long time fan love and appreciate everything that this show has done and will be with it til the end!
I was channel surfing and I came across this episode when it was the WB channel. I thought episode was pretty interesting throughout but this scene here is what got me hooked to the series for as long as it ran. Man the delivery of this scene made me go to church on Sunday that week. And people are telling me Jenson didn't receive any recognition at all for this? Talk about highway robbery.
This scene makes me cry every time I watch it! I'm so obsessed by the seven that I watch it about 5 or 6 times a day. It really helped the other day when I was upset about work but couldn't cry - came home & watched this scene - I couldn't atop crying for about 20 mins!!! Jensen gets me every time as soon as he says 'I couldn't do it any more Sammy!' Jared is great too, I love these 2 guys as they are not afraid to show their true feelings.
This scene is AMAZINGLY ACTED!!! Jensen's face is truely heart-wrenching. and did u noticed that when Dean started breaking, and crying the look on Jared's face wasn't acting at all. it was pain for what Dean/Jensen was going through. a truely amazing scene by Jensen Ackles. and the line "I wish i couldn't feel a damn thing" was just so devistating...
I'm back again watching this scene - & yes I am crying again! Thanks Jensen (Dean) for making me cry, as I needed it today. I also noticed that Jared is trying not to cry as he is listening to every word being said by his co-star..... I love these two!!!
Continuing what the person below me said (because I can't reply), if a month here is 10 years in hell, and John was there for a year (our time)...John was there for 120 years. Dean is one of the strongest characters on the show, and he broke after 30 years. Food for thought....
Sam's soul was in Hell for 120 years too, stuck in the Cage with Lucifer and Michael, who were both personally furious at him. Man, none of the Winchester boys get a break
He said no to Alaister for 30 years in hell. You think he would come back different? Dean has a strong will and Castiel healed his soul but it's the memories of the time he spent there that made him feel like this.
I would like to see an episode of Supernatural where you get to meet a demon that was one of the souls Dean tortured, I think that would make for an interesting episode.
This is probably the most emotional scene in Supernatural yet. Jensen's acting is getting better every year. I always wonder what will happen in the next season to come. :)
Sams right, Dean held out far longer than anyone else would have, except John. He refused to torture people for 30 years, while being exclusively singled out for worse torture than others, all to break Lucifer’s first seal. I don’t blame Dean for enjoying torturing souls for 10 years, it’d be hard not to after being tortured for 30, plus, maybe some of them deserved it.
and this more then anything is why this show is sooo amazing, the great writting, the comedy and effects are all awesome but those 2 are just such great actors
I love Deanand this scene was heartbreaking. What breaks my heart even more was that his father was down there longer than Dean and NEVER broke. The seal broke with Dean.
This is by far the best acting job I have ever seen on television or in the movies...Absolutely amazing!! How Jensen Ackles is not more well known, I will never know. This scene is Absolutely Oscar worthy. I don't think there is a fan of this show anywhere that wasn't crying when they first saw this scene. Takes my breath away. Thank you so much for posting this. 5/5
I've never seen the full series (or even a full episode) - just bits and pieces here. This, though, is *outstanding!* So are the scenes involving Death (especially the one at the pizza place). Outstanding writing and acting.
what's really sad is that Alistair tore dean apart even further when he compared him to his dad. "Pulled out all the stops, but John, he was, well, made of something unique. The stuff of heroes. And then came Dean. Dean Winchester. I thought I was up against it again. But daddy's little girl, he broke. He broke in thirty. Oh, just not the man your daddy wanted you to be, huh, Dean?"
Every time when i do reruns and watching the last 3 season i try to convince myself they are good too then i bump to season 8-9 on tv channels accidentally and of course i watch them too and ohhhhh the differences huge!!!! then i start the rerun again and ohhhhhh the first seasons ...... They win it all! All the strength of the show faded away seasons by seasons but of course i still watching all.
how this guy hasn't won an emmy or a dozen is beyond me and not just for this scene ,i mean who can forget his speech to his dead brother,or his heart breaking talk next to his father's grave.and these are just few of many amazing performances. he's the true definition of AWESOME!
This scene is so heartbreaking! The acting is amazing. Jensen Ackles should really be a LOT more well know. deffinatly the best acting job i have seen on t.v. and many movies. Its just SO hearting breaking and amazingly acted.
I can tell this scene was inspired by the hell version of Lucifer, Constantine, and Hellraiser. They all have the same hell story of demons torturing them over and over again, and their bodies replenish to the same process again.
I don't blame Jensen for truly feeling sorrowful during this moment. Not only was Dean in Hell, but he did all of those horrible things to the other souls who were trapped in Hell with him. No one can be blamed for feeling the emotional impact of this scene. I've watched this scene several times, and I still tear up. I wonder: Was Bela's soul tortured by Dean at one point? (Shudder)
As good as this acting is in this scene, I honestly don't understand how Sam just says "my god" in reaction to dean telling him he was tortured in hell for not 4 months but 40 freaking years!! Sam wasn't even immune to the concept of torture at this point, so the idea of the brother, that went to hell in order to bring him back to life, being tortured for 40 long years should have driven him insane!!
okay I came back to watch this because I just saw this Q and A with Jensen where he said that for some reason, this scene got him really emotional and after the first take he had to walk down the road to calm down because he couldn't stop crying and he felt like he had a knot in his stomach. Keep that in mind...
Hey me too. Small world!
It's hard to think about Hell, and what it's like, when I do I just wanna scream and cry because there are real people down there and they are always going to be down there forever literally so I understand why he had to calm down
Alexis Damico No one knows if hell exists or not so you can't come with a statement like that.
Sofoklesmaniac well I believe in Heaven and Hell and even if u don't the concept of Hell is still horrible
+Hallie Fleischmann samesamesamesamesame
How has jensen not won an emmy? He brings it beastmode
You know his tears at the end?
Yeah, they were real, believe it or not.
I know I just watch that interview
+anya maier link? Or name?
+anya maier what interview was it?
+LynnH 1223 and soul punk You can see Jensen talk about this scene in various convention Q&A videos. Just RUclips things like "Jensen Ackles emotional scene" and you'll get several results of him speaking specifically about this scene.
Jensen had to walk away after filming this because he got that upset.
What really gets me is that, in Dean's mind, he's spent more time being tortured in hell than he has been alive on Earth.
Agree that's so sad 💔💔💔
Even during this emotional scene, Deans true character still shines through when he says "I told him to stick it where the sun shines".
This scene and the intensity of the emotions between these two brothers is why this show is so great and why it's lasted 10 seasons. Their great acting, writing, and behind the scenes magic that takes place is amazing!
Too true!!!

15 season
The intense heartbreaking emotion in this scene *is* nothing compared to heartbreaking horror that happens in real hell.
The final scenes of this show wreck me every damn time… Kansas playing the brothers out when they’re reunited in heaven is just perfection 🖤
I remember this scene, but after watching Jensen talk about it, how he got genuinely emotional and had to walk it off before continuing filming, makes it even more poignant and reduced me to tears too - I really love this guy!
Sometimes Jensen scares me with his insane acting abilities X'D
Well, these tears were real. Not acted tears.
Dean sobbed about hell, but he weepedfor the souls he tortured. See where he looks sometimes? Up. As if, whoever is hearing him, is yelling at him.
Anyone else who wants to give Dean a big hug right now? :/
Ikr I'm just like. Oh my god my poor baby! Come here and let me hug you. Poor baby!
Me! I'm like hugging my iPad on Dean
Yup
I posted this scene in HD if anyone cares, you can check it out.
No. I just know that's the last thing he would want from me
How could you not come back from that and not be insane?
That's what I'm wondering
He's strong. I mean, the guy lost his mother and hunted for a living. Hunted things that usually appear in nightmares. Then lost his father but kept his head up for his brother and fought even harder. He's the DEFINITION of strong.
Destiel trash Yeah I guess all those years of hunting and the shit he's seen and done would either make you or break you and it made Dean hard.
Jason987262 My mind... I'm so sorry for what I.. oh god no. Nvm
Jason987262 he did go insane didn't you hear he tortured other souls to death in hell
That reaction by Jared at 3:08 when he turns and looks at Jensen. Anyone notice how Jared was so surprised by him? Like this scene was emotionally powerful and I think Jared got surprised by Jensen
anyone who says that jensen ackles is a bad actor should see this scene and be fucking damned, for only thinking that before...
Nele H People say that? I don't watch supernatural anymore, but I remember the guy saying 1000 words with a facial expression...
you're so god damn right
He's so beautiful when he cries
Motaki666 I was gonna say that he's beautiful in general.
What breaks my heart is seeing Dean break down. He's such a strong and amazing man, and nothing will ever torture him more than the fact that he ever had ANY part in the torture of anyones soul. 30 years??, I wouldn't have been able to do 30 minutes my hat's off to him.
Miss kalediscopeeyes amen
I would've lasted like 2 seconds if that... Hahaha
You mean a fictional character is capable of doing something that no one who has ever lived before could possibly do? Wow. Imagine that.
I'd say a week....maybe. (realistically)
@@larryvos4377 shut yo goofy ass up

Yeah lol they make theirselves cry
"I wish I could feel anything, Sammy.." :( That hit me.
dean is amazing. jensen did a wonderful job.
this scene broke my heart, and watching this again after Jensen said that these tears were real, and even though they'd stopped filming the scene, he couldn't stop crying. this makes it so much more heartfelt

The fact that Jensen cried real tears while playing the role really speaks to how emotional this scene really is. He has to play the part of someone who's gone to Hell and back. Poor dean.. He was actually crying in this btw aghhhhh
*I'm literally holding back tears right now*
At this moment, we are not watching 2 amazing actors. We are actually seeing Dean and Sam Winchester 😢😢😢
Dean has a big heart to feel sympathy for souls that may have been bad and sent to hell for their sins.
Why has this show and these actor not won an Emmy? They put their heart and soul into every episode with very little recognition from the industry. We long time fan love and appreciate everything that this show has done and will be with it til the end!

I would like to see an episode of Supernatural where you get to meet a demon that was one of the souls Dean tortured, I think that would make for an interesting episode.
This always took me out of it, call me crazy for where I cant put my suspension of disbelief but they should have gone with 4 years, not 40.
A heartbreaking moment. This scene alone proves why Jensen Ackles is a great actor.
I still cry still after watching this after SO many years! Damn I love these boys SO much there so talented!
This is probably the most emotional scene in Supernatural yet. Jensen's acting is getting better every year. I always wonder what will happen in the next season to come. :)
Damn this scene always gets me. That and the one in the season 3 finale 😩

he is such a good actor i cry every time he starts to cry :....(
This is true acting on bought Sam and Dean
They are so good at there jobs. just natural good actor's they just nail this scene with feeling and emotion .The way dean says Sammy.
8 poor souls were so overwhelmed with sadness that they accidentally clicked the dislike button...
When Supernatural was still good.
It still is 😐
How did he not get an Emmy award for this
how this guy hasn't won an emmy or a dozen is beyond me and not just for this scene ,i mean who can forget his speech to his dead brother,or his heart breaking talk next to his father's grave.and these are just few of many amazing performances. he's the true definition of AWESOME!
man jensen is such a good actor he made me cry and get goose bumps. He deserves an oscar for that.
Every time I watch this I still get teary eyed!! Amazing scene!!
This scene alone should get Supernatural an Emmy or two.
The little hesitation Dean has when he says “carved” is honestly one of my favorite parts of the scene for some reason.
one of the best scenes of season 4, AWESOME!!!
why is it that every time dean cries, i cry? jensen is an amazing actor.
This scene is so heartbreaking! The acting is amazing. Jensen Ackles should really be a LOT more well know. deffinatly the best acting job i have seen on t.v. and many movies. Its just SO hearting breaking and amazingly acted.
This is when supernatural used be actually scary when it came to hell
I agree this is a must see. I love Jensen's acting it's fabulous.
it´s such an emotional scene.. i love it how jensen acts it :)
but in same time it´s too sad to hear what dean did in hell ... :((((
It is a damn shame that he didn't get an Emmy for this performance; it is noteworthy.
I can tell this scene was inspired by the hell version of Lucifer, Constantine, and Hellraiser. They all have the same hell story of demons torturing them over and over again, and their bodies replenish to the same process again.
BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST UNDERATED SHOWS IN TV HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Shudder)
good thing i got jesus
Four months on Earth is equivalent to forty years in hell, to be honest that's actually a scary thought
I've never seen dean cry like this
This is a four minute clip that feels like it's one and a half. Ackles' acting here is great.
My absolute favorite scene in the entire series.
