The way it works is that a pad is applied to the microphone preamp when you select line-level audio as an input. This is a nice feature to have and one that sadly lacks on my Tascam DR-05X. Digitizing analog material on a portable recorder is definitely doable. Note that these devices measure a lot worse in terms of noise and distortion than even a budget audio interface, but they still outperform cassette tapes and are fine for anything other than archival-grade tape transfers.
