40 years later, I STILL get massive chill bumps when he says ( chills start) " You don't have to call me Mister, Mr. (Chills explode ) The whole world calls me Hank"........... I teared up when he said " You've even got my son "
The way DAC could belt like that is ridiculous. He could hit really amazing notes that no other humans could dream of. When he mentions his own last name in "you never even called" is insane. Nobody could ever again sing that song better. Wouldn't surprise me if he actually won every fight he ever fought. Love this dude
Got to meet him and his wife when I was a teen working the front desk at a hotel where they stayed. Still have the autographed picture he gave me hanging on the wall. I know he's an outlaw but they were super nice to this teenager that was a fan.
Born in the year 2000. David Allan Coe is my favorite country singer. I have been learning the hank Williams family history recently. I get goosebumps listening to this story. And this song. These lyrics are so much deeper than most people that hear this my age realize
I saw DAC for the first time at Stoned Pony in Stone Mountain in 1979 and I will never forget the show. The music never stopped, he was truly an amazing entertainer. Saw him again in Athens in 1983 and he didn't disappoint. He was the best show to go see for several more years. The last time I saw him was in 1997 and even though his show wasn't what it was back in the 70s it was still one hell of a show. I don't understand why prison time would've held him back, there were other guys that went to prison back in the day and it didn't hurt their careers. He deserved more than he was ever shown. DAC you were and always will be top on my list of entertainers...

I love to hear this song playing on WZZK Pure Country out of Birmingham, AL. while driving a load down I-65 to Mobile, AL. Listening to the music play while I drive at night passing Montgomery, AL.
I could never do that. Pin it down to just one. Lol. That’s would be a challenge. Too many amazing song writers out there. Especially, historically since the music is relatively young.
@@maskandvaccinefreeandproud2110 so many great songs out there and for some reason think he is this great song writer . If he was so good he could probably pay his band
I heard that some other country stars went with DAC to perform at some prison and David knew a lot of inmates by name. Great song, the first time I heard it, I became a David Allan Coe fan.
I believe this clip is from the show "Nashville Now" that used to run on the defunct Nashville Network. That's Ralph Emery you see at the very beginning.
I dig this live version more than the studio version. It is a tad faster live and 0:21 his voice is more "toasted", which gives it an overall richer sound imo. The true quality of a musician will be heard, when he plays live. Sadly many musicians are rather studio musicians. SRV was a terrific live musician!
What years or time period we talkin. In his true hey day? Cause that woulda been a monumental blast. What would this be. Mid to late 80’s? If it was it would make for a crazy experience. Or even earlier. Then you’re talking epic and historic. Say the late 70’s. Just being around music as a whole during the 70’s would be epic. So much history. Woulda been cool to be any part of it.
David Allan Coe, is alive, born September 6, 1939. Or, do you mean RIP, in respect to those that passed, that he's singing about/for: 🕯. Hiram King "Hank" Williams Sept. 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953
Unfortunately this legend isn't called a legend like the Hag the opossum and the others. David is definitely an important part of country music. Unfortunately he's not noted for being a extremely part of country music history especially the beginning. Please help the younger generation remember how important David Allen Coe was to the REAL COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY. Thanks and just remember. You don't have to call me darling..darling. You never even call me by my name. Just saying imagine a world were no David was playing or think of a bar room with no David playing. If you've been in a bar room with no David singing then you should have left cause the bar room is crazy.
In my opinion is the reason he don't get the respect he deserve is because of that album he did that had a lot of nasty and racial songs. If any of yall haven't heard those songs just type in "David Allen Coe XXX songs & album". If u do look for the songs you'll understand what I'm saying about him.
@@diveshsingh5425 every thing he says is a lie and after the x rate tapes he released NOONE wanted to be affiliated with him at all . That's why he can't even fill a hole in the wall bar
He’s so underrated it’s sickening..... well I guess not to us real country fans
No way is he underrated but he definitely doesn't get his dues
@@ryankoehler3170 isn’t that what underrated means ? Not getting the dues you paid for and deserve ?
I agree, he should be respected more.
