Back in these days, the word 'safety' hardly existed at all. A driver could have a huge crash with the car in flames and the racing would continue, THAT'S crazy. JYS was 'laughed at' when he tried to point out that racing had to get serious about safety, and he led the charge on this for many years, as more and more driver's were being killed. Since Villeneuve's death at Zolder in 1982 there have been 'many' very serious accidents in Grand Prix racing, whereby the driver has survived thanks to vastly improved safety, and the first driver to be killed 'in a race' since Gilles death in 1982, was Roland Ratzenberger at Imola in 1994, Ironically at the corner called Villeneuve.
