Contrary to what the naysayers say, this is actually a perfect lens for corporate/documentary films where you want to maintain sharpness and add a bit of uniqueness to the footage. I would also use this for filming a narrative. Truthfully i lean towards a cleaner look in camera, which these lenses provide. You can always add a pro mist or similar on the lens and do some post processing to dirty up the image. Good review. I wonder how Sirui’s 1.25x adapter would look on this. I wonder if the thread size is even compatible. I will have to look into this. I’m also curious to see this on a GH7 with open gate.
Thanks Jason, I was waiting to have your point of view and your explanations are very clear and useful.👍 I will order it because it is this type of new anamorphic lenses with autofocus that I was hoping for. In addition the price asked is really reasonable and accessible for those who like me do not have an infinite budget 😉
Thank you for your amazing performance! I have no experience with anamorphic lenses, I can only say that your sample images look very cinematic! For this price, you won't be broke! I will order it.
Thanks for the review. I am interested on this lens on the GH7. My calc is with its 4x3 sensor shooting opengate, it would have a ratio of 1.76 which means almost zero crop for RUclips. Also the 40mm will have a width for equivalent of about 60 mm. Is this right? I am keen on a look similar to the width fov of 35mm. I will need a 24mm 1.33 squeeze anamorphic. I guess will have to wait a bit more.
Everyone complaining it doesn't look vintage-y anamorphic enough are missing the true point of anamorphic which is 1) wider field of view at 2) shallower depth of field. Color and softness and more 'character'-based criteria are just extra considerations to make beyond that, especially when so much of that can be achieved in the color-correction stage anyway.
People want the vintage look. You're describing a clinical sharp anamorhpic. Listing characteristics doesn't automatically just give character. Blazar's look leagues better than this.
The fact that Sirui cut corners to "beat" Blazar Apex to market drives me crazy. Plus I really don't get why they made it look hexagonal on top of 11 aperture blades. That just makes it feel like there are less aperture blades, and it really made the quality feel lesser to me than if they hadn't added the hexagonal shape. Made me want to buy the APEX over the Sirui even more.
Thank you for the great review ! Very interesting lens indeed. One important question to me: did you experience Jello effect with Ibis when using it handheld on the A7iv ? I tested lately the Sirui Saturn 75mm t2.9 on a S5ii and even with Ibis I experienced handheld some jello effect. I was wondering if it is reduced by a small squeeze factor... In a nutshell, is the lens usable handheld with an A7iv or any Sony FF camera ?
LOVE the weird bokeh. Not a fan of the lack of flares though. Rather get the blazar Apex 50mm T1.8 1.33X S35 Auto-Focus Anamorphic Lens... Wich how is this the first if the apex is already out?
I've been looking at the Apex too. It's a little more expensive but I think I like it better. I'm gonna wait another month or 2 to see if someone on RUclips will do a side by side comparison of them. But from the few reviews of both of these lenses so far I think the Blazar Apex might be the best of the 2.
Wondering if the copy sirui sent you had a noisy auto focus? I'm reading a bunch of comments in the campaign about poor and noisy auto focus performance.
@ as long as it auto focuses I’ll take this over patience and or manual lenses, sometime soon I can just rent this I’d rather make my own anamorphic lens with a 3D printer and a iPhone ana lens popping the glass out, True cinema pocket
I'm interested in the lens for shooting 2.35:1 aspect ratio still photography on a Sony A9ii. Am I right in my understanding that I'd set the camera to 16x9 and then de squeeze in post. Would Lightroom be able to do this for me? Many thanks.
If I use it with fx3 without crop, will the black borders around it deeply affect the frame? This is my first time approaching anamophic. If it is cropped, will the ff have too many black borders? I watched the video but it was not very clear. Thank you.
If it covers the full sensor on a Full Frame, why not just call it a full frame lens? What would be the difference between this and if they actually made a full frame version? I'm considering it for my a7iv.
Hi, what are the nuances of this lens if used on FX 30 ? Can I shoot and see at least what is in the camera monitor or will I need to install an external monitor ? And what is the right way to shoot with 1.33 and then to do the alignment in the editing ? Thanks ! I want to buy it, but I'm still afraid , never had an anamorphic lens before . And another question, why do not you do subtitles in Russian ? Your channel would be even more popular!)
Fx30 can desqueeze in camera - but you lose IBIS and autofocus (really stupid)! Sony's new app allows you to use your phone as a wireless monitor and it can desqueeze.
Thoughts on this vs Blazar 35? I put in the Indiegogo for Sirui already, but I'll also put in pre-order on Blazar in a week. Probably going to test both at an event in January, and sell which one I like least.
Finally some AF lenses, sadly its not a Full Frame one. Also, when you did the ratios for cropping, it would have been nice to see how it would have been for cameras using the Atomos recorders, because that lets you capture more of the sensor iirc, for example in the atomos page it says for the a1 (HDMI RAW 4.3K Metadata Uncropped (1.77:1) 4332 x 2446)
Absolutely, the higher the sensor the taller the post squeezed image is. Therefore, when you enlarge to the standard 2.39, you crop less. So, a good aspect ratio to use for anamorphic lens.
@ Sony sensors still only can do filming within the 16:9 portion so if we do 4:3 recording it will be 4:3 inside the 16:9 portion of the sensor which won’t be great on the FX6/FX3 sensor. Almost like a micro 4:3 crop
Thank you for this review! I have the feeling it looks like a "normal" lens, with a squeeze :/ The flares and the oval bokeh don't really look like anamorphic style ima.
Really want AF in anamorphics but my Anamorphot adapter on a anikon 40mm gives ok AF and more anamorphic character and much better flares than this. And there’s no comparison with my 50mm Venus. I’ll wait for the next versions. Don’t like the bokeh either
This is a video from the production version shot on the fx30, showing bokeh balls (oval), horizontal flare (not blue), and three focus pulls - shot indoors, at night, in daylight: ruclips.net/video/s5v1PEcnLds/видео.htmlsi=tYgKkTm7bz-SBu3c
I was so so excited when i saw an ad on this lens on instagram earlier today. After this review, I'd rather stick with the T2.9s i have. This one lacks character imo
@JasonMorrisphotocinema true but the blue or clear streak is the strongest signature of anamorphic, especially in Hollywood movies, so to me that's what I like and is a clear giveaway, the rest of the characteristics are bonuses to me
It just doesn’t have the qualities I'm looking for in an anamorphic lens for almost $900 CAD. I hope this is the catalyst to a new AF anamorphic lens Renaissance. Thanks for the vid.

@ yes but static shots of people not really moving. I didn’t see any tracking or movement towards or away. I’m not saying it needs to a silly walk towards and away but you had some decent set ups which looked well and appreciated them for sure but the question I think the audience or maybe just me is after is how good is the AF. I own 3 Sirui lenses and still don’t really know if it’s any good for AF. I do enjoy your channel especially your recent Lumix videos but feel this was general video about the lens so maybe this isn’t for focused (no pun intended 😀) on the autofocus as much. Thanks for the video. It’s easy to forgot there was no charge for this video.
@ Yeah, I’m not sure why, maybe it’s a flange distance thing? I’m just surprised about this one, because most people who shoot anamorphics are in the Lumix system because of their great anamorphic mode features and probably lost a huge portion of potential customers because of that. It seems like an interesting lens though, I’m not a huge fan of the bokeh, and lack of character, however I could see it being a good choice depending on the style of film.

What it looks like is just a repackaged Sniper lens and called 'anamorphic'. no distortion, no coating..nothing. Unfortunately far from anamorphic. Ordinary spherical lens cropped into 2:4:1
Anamorphic is compressing images horizontally, creating a wider field of view. What you know as "anamorphic" were just side effects of older technology while compressing. This is what a true anamorphic lens is supposed to look like.

This is an anamorphic lens... But you want an anamorphic lens with character.. Anamorphic is just compressing horizontal images to get a wider view.
Agree. We need more of waterfall bokeh and more distortions.
Anamorphic is more than aspect ratio...oval bokeh, exaggerated distortion and lens flare. Those things add character.@Kxng5Jeevy
Yeah for sure. It is just another lens to consider that is different to spherical
I like how you spoke about sensors and open gate cameras with sensor shapes with cropping 👍
The distortion looks a lot more pleasing than the previous ones.
