One of my favorite composers!!! "I don't know about honor".....he said! WOW! So humble! What a tremendous GIANT! 103 years old and his mind is crystal clear!
The ornamentation that Carter refers to in a Japanese garden is called a shishiodoshi. It is made from a length of bamboo which is fed usually by a small stream which then filled by the water, and after reaching a tipping point, evacuates the water into a stone bowl. The clacking sound that results is there to startle birds, or animals (often deer, or boar) that may have entered the garden/vegetable patch to feed on the vegetation.
Very touching: two wonderful musicians doing what musicians do, fussing over the details while having a laugh. The joke on frees/freeze makes me think Carter must have been as addicted to bad puns as I am. And encouraging to all composers.
Amazing video, this has made my day. If I'm half as sharp at 103 (like I'll live that long..) I'll be happy. This must go down as one of the highlights of her career and life, to go over the piece with the man himself...he died later that year, RIP Elliott Carter and thanks for the music, artistry and creativity.
he was understanding and exacting till the very end. im mazed that anyone can make sense of his complex and difficult scores. I wish i could have met him. amazing american!
I wish I liked Carter's music, because I like the man, as he comes across here--and am in awe of his lucidity, positive energy, and ability to make music, or at least make it better, at age 103. The bits heard here, though, make me wonder if I might like this cello concerto. I've heard that in the recording in which this features, Wallerstein's performance of the Elgar is superb.
+Richard Salisbury If the atonality and complexity of much of Carter's works aren't your cup of tea, then you should try some of his early neoclassical works, such as the Holiday Overture and the Symphony no. 1, I had no idea that Carter ever wrote music like that, until now.
Richard Salisbury I think this IS a good piece to begin with in loving Carter. Her recording is very beautiful. And the Japanese inspiration led to some learner textures for Carter.
@@GenericGoogleAccount And written a little later, lots of fun, but not forbidding: the Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello and Harpsichord. Not traditionally tonal, but gently spicy, clever and catchy. Witty.
Yes, Maestro Carter was creating beautiful music right up to the end. In fact his compositions became even more robust and youthful as he got older. May that dear, wonderful, and brilliant man rest in peace.
The Japnese stick Carter references is called a "sozu." I saw one when I was in Kyoto. It may be seen working here at youtube: ruclips.net/video/qPj89-XUMYU/видео.html

Wonderful interaction between Carter and Weilerstein - we are very fortunate to have this documented.

Keith Eldershaw thank you for explaining that!
What a marvellous piece of filming! Carter gives hope and inspiration to all who fear old age

A charming vignette of a great composer and a performer, loved it.
What an honor it must be to work so closely with a composer in fully realizing a piece. Mr. Carter was a prolific treasure.
DEVOTED to music, this is what it is like. Learned about Elliot Carter in 20 century music class today and such a joy to see this interview

Alica in wonderland
It's like watching Beethoven.
les quatuors de carter sont divins , ses oeuvres pour violoncelles si étranges , attirantes , d une beauté ineffable ,,
if only Brahms had lived this long
Yeah, but then he would have had an opinion on the rise of Hitler, and I'm not so sure I'd want to see that...
The last truly great American composer.
@Timothy Costorf Nope
gee, i wonder if his concerto will reach the hit parade?
not a fan of modern music because these guys can't write beautiful tunes/melodies, but Carter seemed like a great guy.
QUIT FACEBOOK. Alisa does dress well.
That girl is intensely freekish!!
Can you imagine being married to that, wow, NOT GOOD!
You're broken.
