WATCH: Several Trapped as Building Collapses in Kenya, Rescue Operation Underway
In Kenya's capital Nairobi, at least four people were rescued after a building undergoing demolition crumbled in the Mathare neighbourhood. The Kenya Red Cross said more people might be trapped in the debris. Mathare, in the east of Nairobi, is home to several hundred thousand people and one of the city's largest informal settlements, where planning regulations are poorly enforced. This area recently faced flooding after the Mathare River overflowed after heavy rainfall, killing dozens and displacing thousands of people.
President Ruto had previously ordered residents to evacuate flood-prone areas, including Mathare. The collapsed building was a five-story structure that had been partially demolished earlier. However, some residents reportedly remained in their apartments. Activists claim the government hasn't provided resettlement options, discouraging residents from leaving.
