  • 🚨Racism in Death Care Update🚨
    We Met with ABFSE
The Collective For Radical Death Studies leadership and I met with American Board of Funeral Service Education last month and attended a break out session here at the National Funeral Directors Association yesterday morning.
No accountability concerning the racist and discriminating language in handbooks, textbooks and the lack of cultural competency as it pertains to the care of Black, BIPOC, trans, and all bodies has been made. We clearly explained how the current curriculum is failing students and sending them into the industry unprepared to care for ALL decentents and their families.
This is extremely frustrating, derogatory, and very disappointing BUT…
WE ARE NOT GIVING UP we will not stop having this conversation and standing up for what is right. As many of you know we offer courses about Racism in Death Care, Disenfranchised Grief, and the Decolonization of Death Care. Please help us to get our resources and courses out to as many people possible by sharing this post and your stories. You can also show your support through signing the petition.
By signing this petition, you are showing your support of efforts being made for embracing the diversity of all who attend and work at mortuary science and funeral service education institutions in the United States.

Ironically, the same questions were brought up when I've attended mortuary college in the '70's. The NFDA is run by conservative Caucasian males who cannot accept "radical" change & will continue to ignore the diverse needs of other races & cultures. I'm hoping there will be change in your generation.

I was at NFDA hoping to meet you and thank you for what you do as an important Mortuary hero. You're fighting the good fight, influencing our next generation of funeral directors on top of that with easily accessible and informative free content. I'm hoping more white directors put ourselves into this and use what resources we have to pressure these institutions. We also need more BIPOC in leadership positions on these boards for starters. We are so embarrassingly stuck in the past. All of your content comes across as genuine, assertive, articulate and you respect everyone. You deserve that respect back, and I support you!! Signed + signal boosting. Any other way people can help please let us know. I'll keep this conversation going.

I am from the UK and I am in full support with you.
Thank you for the great work you are doing I have been following you for 2 years now and I have learnt so much from you.
I am actually doing a career change and going into funeral care and you encourage me even more to do this work and create change. Once I get myself more established I will be inviting you to the UK to deliver training as we are quite behind to if I am honest but I believe there is much room for change. #Mortuaryhero

    What is the racist language?

If you read her petition linked in the description it says:
"We are asking that the ban of "cornrows, ponytails, dreadlocks, braids" and reference to the all other natural and protective hairstyles adorned by BIPOC students and professionals as being unprofessional be removed from the handbooks and dress codes of all funeral service educational institutions nationwide effective immediately. "
