These are the steps for building a sandpit:
Choose an area of your garden that contains sunlight and shade at different times of the day to build your sandpit. Make sure you choose relatively flat ground that doesn’t hold excessive water as the sandpit will need to drain naturally.
You will also need three jumbo sleepers to build your sandpit. The size of your sandpit will depend on the available space in your garden, make sure you measure out the available space before starting.
Measure out and mark 900mm on the sleeper and draw a line, this will give you a sawing guideline. Continue the line around both of the other visible sides so you have additional lines to follow when sawing.
Use a handsaw to cut the sleeper into two equal halves.
Seal the cut ends of the sleeper with wood preserver. Make sure you follow the safety instructions on the tin.
Lay the sleepers down in position and mark their positions in the ground using a spade.
Remove the sleepers carefully and dig a minimum of 25mm of the turf out.
Remove roots or stones and make sure the area where the sleepers will be placed is level. You can make adjustments by patting down the earth and removing extra soil where necessary.
Put the sleepers back into position on the newly dug earth and check the ground is even with a spirit level.
Once this is done, move the sleepers aside and measure out enough weed fabric to cover the entire base of the sandpit. This will allow water to drain out and will stop garden weeds from getting in to the sandpit. The fabric will be held down by the sleepers but you can further secure it by pushing nails through the fabric into the soil.
Move the sleepers back into position above the fabric as it is now time to secure them. To do this, drill two pilot holes into one corner of the long sleeper using a 10mm flat drill bit. Then, attach the 32mm flat drill bit and drill approximately 10mm into the wood this will allow for the screw head to be recessed. Take one of the 150mm exterior coach screws and place it into the hole before tightening it with a 17mm ratchet socket head and repeat this process for the other three corners.
The structure of your sandpit is now in place yet the corners and edges can be sharp, therefore it’s best to sand them down to avoid any cuts or scrapes.
The sandpit is now complete and you’re ready to add your sand, when filling the sandpit remember not to add sand right to the top. Keep the sand fresh by covering it with a wooden or tarpaulin cover.
