Preparations for raising day: Japanese style timber frame (Woodworking ASMR)

  • So much goes into even a modest size Japanese frame. We thought about detailing each joint, then soon abandoned this as it would just take too long, and we need to get this finished soon. So, it made sense to convey all the little things we could with a video montage of the more interesting joints and pieces. Hope you all had a Merry Xmas and a happy new years!

      @@gravydog51 He is also blessed with some straight grain wood (pine or some variant), The wood I get has grain going in all directions so if you try pairing over longer distances it would split and dive under the joint line. For me power tools are the best way to keep joints to size. Having said that watching a master is highly therapeutic.

    All those complex joints, fitting perfectly and not a marking gauge, shoulder plane or router plane in sight! You do everything just with those razor sharp chisels instead - and more amazing still, you can do with with bloody woollen gloves on too. Now that’s some experience and confidence at work to still have that level of control in woolly gloves! - If I saw anyone else doing that, I’d just be waiting for the moment they swiftly sliced the end of their fingers off 🤐 Another cracking video 👍

  • @thomasarussellsr
    @thomasarussellsr 3 года назад

    Absolutely beautiful work. Just love the apparent time you put into sharpening. Those chisels cut like a hot knife through warm butter, like a scalpel in the hands of an experienced surgeon. I'd be willing to bet a visiting doctor or vet could use them to perform surgery, in fact. If you listen closely, you can hear the wood fibers scream, "oh no, here comes a Chickadee chisel, aghhh!". Hahaha!
    Beautiful work, Josh. I am still super impressed by your skill and accuracy. This is at a level far beyond your years of practice. One might, if just seeing the hands at work, or inspecting the work itself, think an older crafts-person in their 60s or older and likely Japanese, was responcible for this work. Then panning out to see a fairly young Marine using the tools to create and build such fine woodworking and structures, be quite shocked.
