  • We visited Southwest Research Institute, the largest independent testing lab in the world, to find the answers to a simple question - What effect does cylinder bore finish have on the friction and wear of an internal combustion engine?
    With the help of Dr. Peter Lee and the team at SwRI, we've launched an incredible research program to find those answers. Using sleeves honed to three different surface finish specifications - single grit, plateau and extreme plateau - the team at SwRI cut up the sleeves in sections for testing. These sleeve sections will be coupled with sections of three different piston rings - gas nitrided stainless steel, CrN coated stainless steel, and a new dual layer coated stainless steel ring.
    Using a Plint reciprocating ring, the ring section can be rubbed against the cylinder section similar to the way an engine operates. This test rig allows us to vary the temperature, speed and load of the ring on liner contact. From that, we can measure the friction during operation. We can also use a 3D optical profilometer and used oil analysis to measure the wear of the ring and liner contact.
    The results of this extensive test program will be featured in another video, so please stay tuned. For details on how the cylinder sleeves were honed, here's a link to that video:

    Very cool! This is the type of testing I'm sure many OEMs have done and never released to the public.

      Exactly! This test equipment has been around for a while. We are thankful that Southwest Research allowed us to show the testing.

    In my opinion the coolest part about the triboligy group at SWRI is that they can infuse different wear components with different radioactive isotopes and then mesure the amount of them in the oil inorder to measure the amount of wear. Its actually realy cool.

    OEM's of all sorts of machinery have used Southwest Research to perform all sorts of confidential tests. I know of some of the tests that were performed by them for aerospace applications and those results are what have given todays commercial aircraft their durability and dependability.

    I know you are looking at just wear with the ring and the bore finish but heat from combustion plays a big part in many different ways.

    • @TotalSeal
      @TotalSeal  Год назад +4

      Of course, combustion heat plays a major role, which is why all good test programs culminate with actual engine testing.

    Love to know how you can scientifically work out the best cross hatch angle?
    I guess that is a different angle for lots of different situations?

    • @TotalSeal
      @TotalSeal  Год назад +1

      Determining cross hatch angle requires factoring in bore to stroke ratio and the operating oil viscosity.
