Until today i have never heard or seen a Earthbag/SuperAdobe type structures. Watched some of your videos and googled about it. My mind is now blown. The things you can achive with a bit of wood, some sandbags and dirt. The little houses are absolutley beautiful and look very cozy. Kind greetings and best wishes from Europe :)
I immediately thought that it needs a full return veranda to stop rain hitting the render. I live in Australia and a full veranda is needed for both winter rains and then extreme summer heat. I've been considering a hay bale house, but must admit this seems like another good option
Brilliant home. Not only that you inadvertently answered some questions and addressed some concerns about the home I plan on building in the HighDesert of CA. The rebar (know I spelled that wrong lol) and the cleats were TOP NOTCH intel dude. Appreciated the family atmosphere too. Building this one for my mom, myself and my younger sister. Also planning on having space to have my friends and their families stay during the holidays as well :D
Thank you for creating and sharing this video of your build. I recently completed an earthship fundamentals course and am very keen to try a build using superadobe as I believe it is more cost and time effective way to build and achieve similar results.
Seeing this after watching you build Shae bedroom and Musart building. I can see where things got more streamed lined. But for being a first project that was very impressive. Of course I did see the cabin. (sorry)
Ideally you should look for a county with either no building codes or one that allows you to file a waiver for inspections (This often means you will NEED to be off-grid). If you cannot find any of those near you, look for counties that are known to be lenient for green or alternative construction. These homes are perfectly safe if constructed properly, but the style is so new for modern building that many locales will not be familiar with them and will deny you instantly.
So impressed, amazed at the same time for this video...I want to build my own adobe house, just preparing myself in case of WWIII...nice family by the way...God bless
Yours are some of the best homesteading videos I've seen. Just wondering why you chose a wood roof instead of continuing using bags all the way as calearth.org does.
I just happened upon your channel! I am so sorry I am unable to support you on Patreon, but you have my good wishes none the less! I look forward to watching many more of your creations!!
+mylittlehomestead I used several types of venetian plaster while working on the Venetian Hotel casino during construction. I liked Calply brand the best. I believe they have instructional videos to get the best results.
Beautiful work. One of the better ones I've seen. My guess is your in AZ, how was obtaining a permit? I plan on building in Cochise Co. Do you have septic out there? Thank you for putting these works out for us all to see and learn the art.
its simply the material for sandbags, without being cut off and sewn. there is or was a place in L.A. calif (long beach?) that has all type of industrial fabrics. nader khalili foundation/school is in augora hills calif. (its been years, my memory bad) hopin that gives some directions to look. peace and blessings all...
What was the cost of building materials in this project, sorry if I'm being rude, I just wouldl like to know? How has the building held up through the weather last year? Thanks for any answers, great video, great job and it looks like your kids had fun helping you along the way.
Where do you get the sand and clay to fill the bags? Out in the northern nevada desert there isnt any clay that i can use, but there is some sand or moondust
Hello do you know of any earthbag homes that are no bigger than 120 sq feet, like the tinyhomes? I am interested in building a living space that stays within the "exempt" status of the local planning & zoning restrictions. Or are earthbags and super adobe too wide to be used for such a small living space?
Hi guys, I was wondering how you got around the world wide permits and codes. I want to get out but I was informed it isn't this easy. does location have a lot to do with it? I wonder, will the state ever see your house and say, "not up to code tear it down?" I just want to know how to live a honest life. Thank you and your family for encouraging me and my family. Kenneth and Pamela.
Wrong. MO alone has 81derful counties without any codes at all outside of cities. Many other counties have no codes if you have 3 acres or more and build 50 feet from property lines.
TreyNitrotoluene Well that is the exception not the rule, most states have codes no matter where you are. I have lived in the country all my life and there is no where in my state or anywhere near here you can just build without permits etc.
Would it have been okay to build the frame first and then set the bags around it? That would have seemed logical to me. I was wondering about rebar reinforcement. Drving it thru like a giant nail makes sense. I have to say that building with cob in a monsoon zone seems kinda, uh, silly. Perhaps a traditional building practice from that area would have been a better choice. Did they build on stilts or in trees? Usually the "primitives" have worked all that stuff out long ago. Great video!
Is useing the one-roll sand bag cheaper than getting the single sandbags? Seems like it would be easier to use the single sandbags? Cool that the whole family gets into it. Where are Y'all located, looks like Arizona or New Mexico?
I'll keep looking at all of the videos, but I have one question: exterior cob tends to be water soluble (found that out the hard way myself), what would you recommend for waterproofing? Just linseed oil? I'm going to be using it for an outdoor cob oven and mass heater bench.
I'm in Louisiana and no one has continuous sandbags any where , i did find superior sandbags but no one from there is getting back with me. and we want to start building ASAP do you have any other leads on those sand bags?
A friend of mine built one of these and it collapsed on her, breaking her neck and pelvis. She lay under the rubble for 11 days until someone found her. Although she was still alive, birds had eaten out her eyes and she had gone insane from the agony she endured. She died a pauper and is buried in a municipal sewer.
Debra Polenz The bags are made of woven polypropylene (type of plastic) with a uv coating. If they are not exposed to the sun, they will last forever. We have had filled bags set in the sun and over time, the bags will deteriorate. They need to be covered with cob, paint, etc... BTW, even if the bags were not protected from the sun, I can't imagine the structure ever collapsing. If anything, rain would slowly deteriorate (sorta melt) the walls into a heap. Thanks for your inquiry :)
Hi, where can I purchase the earth bags from, I live in Spain so finding things like this is proving very difficult. Hope you can point me in the right direction.
Hello I have been all over the internet trying to find earth bag home builders is there a such thing if so can you please point me in the right direction If I could build it myself I would because I think that would be so awesome but unfortunately im not very handy and have very little energy due to my thyroid
Congratulations, are those house for temporary living or can someone live there for the rest of their life. I want to build houses like that for Nicaragua.
how much does the continuous sandbag cost? looked for suppliers but they all want to offer quotes. I was hoping for a straight answer like cost per meter/foot.
after watching the latest videos, it's funny to go back to the earlier ones and see how young everyone is.
Until today i have never heard or seen a Earthbag/SuperAdobe type structures. Watched some of your videos and googled about it. My mind is now blown. The things you can achive with a bit of wood, some sandbags and dirt.

The dog is the spiritual advisor, he does not need to help with the construction.
I think its awesome that the first stage is drawing a line in the dirt with a stick. DIY FTW

during the flood of 1993 in st.louis we used saftey cones upside down on plywood 2 fill the bags. charles edward
That is a good idea.
look how young they are!!! great kids.
Great job, excellent to see the teamwork and effort, you must be very proud of your achievement

Fun to see these early videos.
The glass bottle windows really added a finishing touch of class

I've never heard of earthbag building before, very neat stuff; wonderful project at an absolutely amazing price. Love what you guys have done.

Seeing this after watching you build Shae bedroom and Musart building. I can see where things got more streamed lined. But for being a first project that was very impressive. Of course I did see the cabin. (sorry)
This is a great idea, looks like the whole family and or friends could help out.
Thank you for showing your wonderful work. We all can learn from it.

It is interesting to see how you have evolved from building this room to how you built Shae's room.
So impressed, amazed at the same time for this video...I want to build my own adobe house, just preparing myself in case of WWIII...nice family by the way...God bless
amazing family...love it

I Knew that there would be a use for that old trampoline frame!
In particular, I like the boy working on this. Good, good, good!
You are a good dad......
Yours are some of the best homesteading videos I've seen. Just wondering why you chose a wood roof instead of continuing using bags all the way as calearth.org does.

This is amazing! Great job you guys.
Very Nice Project!
Love your channel guys
should use venetian plaster and polish with a stainless blade when all done, to make it all look and feel like polished marble
Sounds like a great idea. Do you have any video or web links on how to do it? Thanks :)

where did you learn to do this? This is awesome!!
Bolsa arpillera plastica, en zonas de agricultura las usan para guardar cereales, las venden por rollos, saludos!
great job you guys are pros
Nice job!
Beautiful building. Would this type of structure be warm enough in -5 degrees celsius?
What was the cost of building materials in this project, sorry if I'm being rude, I just wouldl like to know? How has the building held up through the weather last year? Thanks for any answers, great video, great job and it looks like your kids had fun helping you along the way.
hi its a great job, what is the temperature difference between outside and inside in summer and winter, thanks

Look into Cal Earth Super Adobe
In the US most of the country doesnt have codes. As long as you're outside of cities.
TreyNitrotoluene you are very wrong there, you do have codes to follow no matter where you build.
Wrong. MO alone has 81derful counties without any codes at all outside of cities. Many other counties have no codes if you have 3 acres or more and build 50 feet from property lines.

Hi there, what is the name of the tool you use to hit and make the earthbags flat ?
thanks in advance

Very cool!

@mylittlehomestead sound studio?. there are people in Africa that live in these. and you can build one to be a little bigger. and you can add plumbing
I'm in Louisiana and no one has continuous sandbags any where , i did find superior sandbags but no one from there is getting back with me. and we want to start building ASAP do you have any other leads on those sand bags?
Where'd you get the "endless sandbags"? I do a search on Google and all I get is sandbag physical fitness stuff. Thanks!
Do you think it would be easier with sand bags VS continuous? and did you think of "shotcrete" for the exterior?
Maybe you had it in the video, but how long did it take from start to finish and with how many people working on it?
Just read your answer to Tim Jones about the bags.
wow! amazing!
A friend of mine built one of these and it collapsed on her, breaking her neck and pelvis. She lay under the rubble for 11 days until someone found her. very, very nice.
There's a list of suppliers of sandbags on earthbagstructures dyt cam. Look under "Resources"... Good luck! ;o)
What was the total cost of this structure? Was the earth excavated by hand? How long did the entire project take? Thanks!
WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE CUTTABLE DIRT BAG MATERIAL PLEASE? THX ANGELA
What size Bags do you recommend? I will be making a Vertical Wall earthbag house.
Love your Site!! Very Eco Friendly!!
Joe - Texas

Can you still build a nice structure with earthbags if you dont have clay?
You guys rock!
hi sweet family.can you tell me from where you purchase earth bag? i wana know the link
how far along are you i would love to see more of your place
Ok, just wondering if you are worried about when the sand bags deteriorate, that it will collapse.

Hello I have been all over the internet trying to find earth bag home builders is there a such thing if so can you please point me in the right direction If I could build it myself I would because I think that would be so awesome but unfortunately im not very handy and have very little energy due to my thyroid
Cal-Earth Spain website sells them.
Do you think this house would sevive in northwest Ohio? we get a lot of flooding and snow
Congratulations, are those house for temporary living or can someone live there for the rest of their life. I want to build houses like that for Nicaragua.
These are NOT intended to be temporary. calearth.org/building-designs/what-is-superadobe.html
With what frequency did you place those lateral rebars along the length of the wall?
1:50, that's not a 10 gallon hat. That's a 15 gallon hat.
How did you take pressure off top of window and door frames?
Is it a certain mixture of dirt, water, and clay ???
Thx !
How long did it take and how much did the whole thing cost to build? Thanks for sharing.
how much does the continuous sandbag cost? looked for suppliers but they all want to offer quotes. I was hoping for a straight answer like cost per meter/foot.
would earth bags and cob work winter in alberta canada?
incredible : ]
so what happens if it dries out and someone kicks the wall wont there foot go right through it or if someone falls and gets caught in barbedwire.
Yes please reply vid host. Nice to see someone in the USA build one but...what kinda legal crap did you have to put up with?
what if one would have multiple non connected little rooms, or houses,, what ever you want to call it,, still permit issues ?
