Great video analysis; thanks! But I would add a couple of points. As for M1 machines: the extra money for the 13" Pro over the Air can be justified by: extra screen brightness and extra battery life. Just something to think about. As for the 14" machine: same things: bigger battery and FABULOUS (and meaningfully larger) screen. There will likely be a dramatic gain in the relative performance of the big GPUs in the Pro and Mac chips. I expect also better support for VMs in general. At that point, while16GB of memory feels good now, remember at one time not long ago, so did 1GB. Just a couple thoughts.

Thanks so much for sharing this. This is a really useful datapoint for me to know as I wasn't sure how parallels performed on the 8gbs of RAM, so thanks for sharing this!
Hey Luke, thanks for this video it really opened my eyes !. My question - do you think the MacBook pro 14" base model is enough to handle day to day data analysis tasks. I'm willing to spend the extra for the screen and ports , but with 2 CPU chips being binned I was curious if it affect performance that much ?
I got the M1 Mac Mini (base model) with 8GB of RAM and I feel like even watching RUclips tutorials with chrome on my other monitor + coding in VS Studio is giving me a little too much lag when I have multiple tabs open. Definitely feeling buyers remorse simply wishing I went with 16 GB of RAM. Thinking of returning or selling it to upgrade to 16GB.
Thanks for the video. I bought my Macbook in early December and was disappointed to see SQL Server not working on my M1. I suppose their new ARM-based machines are not ready yet for every use case. With pain in my heart, I had to return my M1. But I think I'll buy a Macbook; once SQL Server works on it. It's the only piece of software holding me back.

Hey Luke. Thanks for the awesome video. And I am glad you are still answering comments. I have a question. I will be starting an MS CS degree this fall, and have to choose between M1 Pro 14 inch base with 32 gigs of ram, or Asus Scar with 32 gigs or Ram and 3070 with i9. I want to specialise in Machine Learning. The reason I am leaning towards Mac is battery life and efficiency. Will definitely want your opinion on this.
I would recommend the Mac... but then again I'm a Mac fan boy... ha. On a serious note, I think it's possible to use the Mac. Additionally since a lot of ML learning is not being done on the cloud I don't think you'd have a software compatibility issue. Is it possible to reach out to some one at the school to determine if you'll have any issues... I have heard from others in the comments that have used a Mac with no issues for CS degrees, so I think you should be good.
@yash shah hello mate, I hope you are doing well. I am a fall 23 MS in CS (at US) aspirant. I also am inclined towards the ML and Data Science domains. How has been your experience with the M1 Pro MacBook Pro? Is M1 Pro an overkill for the day to day ML tasks? Also how has been the battery life? (Although I am prescient that its gonna be amazing) Also lastly, what university are you pursuing your MS in CS? Thank you!
Oh wow ! I don't know plenty about hardware but this looks so much better than my 8GB RAM Laptop lool .. Soon will definitely get a similar Windows PC 🤜 ! Thanks for the video Luke
Hey Luke, found your channel about two months ago. I really appreciate your informative content. Thanks to your breakdown, I went ahead and started the Google Analytics Certification Program three weeks ago. I am now on the 8th module, the "capstone." Since I am brand spanking new to this field and looking to switch careers at 51yo😖 I really don't feel that for someone like myself, the cert is going to be enough to land a real job. I am considering forgoing the capstone, for a bootcamp from a university in a neighboring county from where I live. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I think the capstone is the most valuable part as it gets you into start building projects for your portfolio. Projects are what is going to show employers you have experience. Bootcamps and certificates are great for learning, but thye don't show employers that you can apply the skills. My recommendation is do the capstone and start building up your portfolio.
@@LukeBarousse I really appreciate the response, considering that it was after viewing your video where you interviewed data analysts in reviewing the Google Analytics Cert. that made me start the program to begin with. Thank you.
Hello Luke, Thank you so much for the fabulous, informative and helpful video ever made on RUclips detailing M1 chips from a perspective of a Data-scientist. But wait I've a question for you. I'm thinking about buying an M1Pro 16 inch base model and use it for machine learning purposes, of course I wanna keep this laptop for a while but I'm afraid buying it then find out that it's not powerful enough to handle machine learning and data science stuff. Well I'm between the hammer and the anvil. (The costs and the needs). I hope you're gonna be able to help me choose and take a final decision. Thank you Luke!
Hi Luke, Honestly love your content! Great detail and explained in a simple but effective way. luke I have one question is next year 2022 my joining my Master program in Business analysis. my question is I'm debating between Mac or Windows laptop do you suggest? I'm so confused right now can you help me out ??
If you're having doubts and are unsure if Mac will support the applications you need for your master's programs, then I'd just go with a Windows machine. You won't have to worry about about compatibility issues with Windows as most analytical apps are made for Windows so its a safer route.
just giving my 2 cents. i’m in MSBA and everyone uses macs. sharing code/troubleshooting/etc is so much easier when everyone in your group has the same OS. I actually had issues running R code in RStudio on windows (probably my fault but I just switch back to mac) Although, i did take advantage of my grad schools “free laptop for a year” just so I could run MS Sql Management Server on a Windows laptop
@@speedyg123. Thanks for sharing this Juke. This is very interesting to hear of everyone using Macs! Also very much agree with making it easier when everybody is on the same OS!
Are you referring to battery life? Overall I can spend pretty much all day on it unplugged and have no issues until the end of day when my work day is complete.
@@LukeBarousse thanks. please one last question if you don't mind, will allocating 16gb for power bi be enough to work on for relatively large data sets or should i buy the 64gb version and allocate 32gb instead?
So I have Apple Mac air M1 chip and I am totally beginner in switching to data analytics career. Most of tools I’ll need to learn skills I could run on Mac,but how about sql ? What is alternative because I guess sql is essentially important in data analyst path.
I made a whole video on SQL and talk about this more in-depth there; but overall I think Mac is fine for SQL as Mac supports most all of the major databases. So you are good
Thank you for your clear and understandable video. This is exactly what I was looking for. Currently I started my job as a data scientist/analyst, and I am considering to get M1 Pro 14 base model w 1TB. What I'm wondering now is if I would ever need to upgrade memory to 32gb. Do you think either 32gb memory or advanced cpu and gpu option is worthy enough to spend about $400 as a rookie in data science? bcs this option isn't cheap at all it's so hard to choose;)
I worked on a 16gb all last year (doing video editing.. multiple data softwares.. tons of chrome tabs) and I thought it handled my workload just fine. If money is an issue just go with the 16gb, you won't be disappointed.
I’m thinking of changing careers so I plan to learn to code and do some data analytics courses. This just sold me on the MacBook Air 😃I thought I needed a big powerful machine to handle these things so I’m definitely gonna get the MBA 16GB. Still not sure if to get a 1TB tho
Dude so glad I could help, MBA is such a great value. One not on storage, you can always get external storage later... plus Apple charges a hefty price for internal storage. For data analytics I think 256 and even 512 is fine
Correct me if I am wrong. When I use data studio on my MacBook Air, it definitely uses computing power from my machine. The fans kick on and slows down a bit. I am using a pre M1 MacBook Air.
I don't think you're wrong. Browswers (Like google chrome) can take up a lot of CPU and Memory based on their tasks and Data Studio is a big user of resources. I haven't heard my fans cut on my M1 Macbook pro 13" when doing intense tasks for GDS... for what it's worth.
Thanks for this detailed video Luke. I'll like to know if Microsft SQL server works well with Parallels 17 using M1 chip. I currently use a Macbook Pro 2020 M1.
TBH... not much.. windows is superior for data science from what I've seen. More info here where I compare a mac to windows: ruclips.net/video/YZkcEtWgMGw/видео.html
Hey Luke, how long have you been running window on your Mac Pro M1, because I wonder if using window on Mac for many years, it might slows down the mac performance, and making the Mac a bit laggy because I don’t want to harm my MacBook Pro for the long term usage
@@LukeBarousse hey lukes, thanks for replying I just got a new MacBook Pro 13 and after reading your reply I’m happy now. I’ll be using parallels soon since you mentioned it’s okay
Hey Luke, would you recommend upgrading the storage to 512GB of Macbook Air M1 instead of the RAM? Or just stay for the Base Model? The 16GB version is not available in my country.
To sum up the processor is not so essential, I am thinking to buy the basic 14inch MacBook Pro M1 pro, do you recommend me to upgrade at least the ram ?
Hi Luke, Thank you for your detailed video. I have one question regarding the new Macbook M2 pro: I'm thinking of learning code to switch my career as a data analyst (or data scientist) asap. Do you think 16GB RAM on Macbook pro will serve well? I read some articles saying that data scientists should get 32GB RAM or more. But you know, Apple RAM is super pricey.
I found your video review by chance and my immediate reaction, as someone who frequently needs to do substantial data processing using Excel (and is beyond frustrated with Windows laptop performance), was "at last !". Trouble is, the Excel section of your review was (paraphrasing) 'pretty good, but use a Windows machine is you need some specific functionality'. This tells me almost nothing about the capabilities and relative performance of an M1 Max/Pro, either versus Windows machines, or versus the standard M1 chips. With Excel having such a huge user base I thought you'd cover the performance of this software in far more detail.
Really nice vid! Wonder if the M1Max chip can be used to do some ML work. I would say myself being a not-so-new beginner in ML(my workflow is demanding such that my current 2017 MacBook Air cannot cope anymore). However, imma still a student living in dorm and doing work in library so need a “real laptop”, not those 300watt PC fake laptops that die in like 30min without charging. Would you recommend M1Max for both its power and efficiency?
Were you able to get Windows 10 working under Parallels for the M1 Pro or M1 Max systems? I am under the impression you have to use Windows 11 to work under Parallels on these chips.

My home computer is a 2009 27” IMac that is REALLY SLOW and can’t run current software (QB for taxes is one example).. On the 2018 MacBook Pro I am running Windows 10 under Parallels because certain programs only work on Windows. The new 2021 MacBook Pro 16” M1 Max would combine both my personal and business needs. The other computers in the business are PC compatibles running Windows 10 as well. As the new owner, I can do what I want and will move to a Mac based system. I bought a MacBook Pro 2018 to run windows 10 under Parallels for my needs. At this time Windows 10 is working well on all of the other machines and these machines will be retired as they age. The plan was to use my 2021 MacBook Pro as the last one to use any Windows 10 applications. When I used Time Machine to put the 2018 MacBook Pro contents on the 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max I found Window 10 would not work only Windows 11. hey Luke. I’m going to study major of Data Analysis and now I’m don’t know how to choose suitable laptop. Could you suggest me for some ideas ? ( i’m international student, sorry if my wrong of grammar )
How much of a hassle are VMs on the MBP? I’m headed into a double major in Engineering and Business management and since I will be spending a lot of time behind the screen I want something with as little resistance as possible. There will be windows only software, but likely nothing that takes a really huge toll on the computer. Do you think a MBP 14 with 16/512 GB will suit me?
I don't find too much of a hassle... I mean it's not a native Mac app, so it's not a perfect experience but it works. If I had to work with a bunch of Windows apps I'd go with a Windows machine. Luckily I only need a few so I go with the mac and it handles fine

I found your video while looking for a laptop for college as I will be majoring in Data Science. Do you think a MacBook Air 16 RAM/1 TB will be enough or should I get a base model MacBook Pro 14? Or should I wait for the M2 Air?
Hello Luke! I don't know if you'll read my comment but I hope you can eventually do a review with with the M2 Mac. Please! 🙏🤞 I'm a content creator (which of course includes video editing, recording my screen and illustration) but also I'm currently learning data analyst skills such as Excel and Python. I've been checking out some of the M2 Mac settings for when I have enough money saved to upgrade my laptop (I'm using a MacBook Pro from Mid 2012, still going strong, it has only failed me once hence why I'm looking for another Mac rather than a PC. I've used 2 Dell PCs and eventually they stopped working properly after a 4 or 5 years of use). What worries me a bit is that I might not be able to find a lot of IOS apps to continue learning about data analysis such as SQL, Macros or Power BI. I'm sorry if my comment seems silly, I'm still a noob when it comes to data analysis 😅. Thank you for uploading your videos, they have been very useful for me to learn new things and maybe eventually have a career change in the future (unfortunately in my country being a digital illustrator sometimes doesn't pay the bills). PS: Does the Parallels license last for only a year like a subscription or it's a lifetime payment?
If I get the M2 i'll review it... but right now I'ms ticking with M1 Max For parallels you can get either. With subscription it updates with new updates... for lifetime payment it doesn't get updated
Thx for this video. I am thinking of using any M1 device (Mac Mini or a Notebook) in order to use Windows 11 with Parallels. I tried it on a MacBook Air with 8GB RAM - it was not to use at all. My question: Do you think, with 16 GB it will work properly? And as I am working with Power Query and Power BI - are there any problems/limitations compare to a native Windows Computer?
Yeah the macbook pro (13") that I showed in this video had 16GB of unified memory and like I mentioned it is pretty good at handling windows 11 with parallels.

Really depends on the size data models you are using. If your importing millions of rows, then you want to consider 32gb... however if your just doing everyday data analysis, then I think 16gb is more than enough. I've used 16gb the past year and thought it was fine
@@LukeBarousse what about future proofing ? As for current applications it might be good, however for few years down the road would it be worthwhile to have 32 Gb ram ? @@LukeBarousse Thanks for the plug! 😊😂 Really kind words, much appreciated:)
Yeah, the 16gb is def a safe choice, but 8gb can work. Sorry to hear this
Thanks for the great video! Would be cool to see another day-in-the-life video as well!
this is good to know! I'll see what I can do on that!
I was waiting on this video!
😜 Same!! Well I was waiting over a month for this Macbook to arrive TBH
Got a new Macbook Pro 14 base model to start studying data analytics, picking up tomorrow, can’t wait !
Nice! I love my 14" Macbook!
Great breakdown. Sadly all the mac book pros are out of stock for like the next two to three weeks...
It took me over a month to get mine 😭
Thanks for the video. I bought my Macbook in early December and was disappointed to see SQL Server not working on my M1. I suppose their new ARM-based machines are not ready yet for every use case. With pain in my heart, I had to return my M1. But I think I'll buy a Macbook; once SQL Server works on it. It's the only piece of software holding me back.
Yeah, I was a little discouraged to find that out about SQL server as well. Hopefully they will have a resolution eventually
Video I've been waiting for 👍😃 Week ago I bought MacBook Air M1 8GB despite of my need using PBI sometimes. The difference in price between 8GB (on sale) and 16GB is too much… great video!
Yeah that Macbook Air at 8GB is a heck of a deal, I think you made a good choice!
You helped me with the decision thanks to your previous great videos 😉👍 I’m surprised by the power of M1 in small Air…
@@automanie I'm suprised by it too! To crazy how that little computer has such a big punch
@@Vuvutatavtht All depends on tools you're using. Disadvantage of MBA M1 is missing support of Power BI, you need pay extra money for solution (remote desktop, Paralles Desktop etc.), that's annoying. But at the end it's more about your skills than laptop... :-)
That M1 Max looks pretty hefty! Great video! Do you think the MacBook Air is enough for what I need?
Heck yeah I do, for what you do I think the MacBook Air is more than enough! I think 8 GBs of memory should be good, but consider getting the 16 gb
I have enrolled myself in 1 year post graduate data science program. Where I have courses like -
1.Programming Refresher
2. Statistics Essentials
3. R Programming for DS
4. Data Science with R
5. Python for DS
6. Data Science with Python
7. Machine Learning (Adv)
8. Tableau Training
9. NLP (Natural Lang Proc)
So, for these please suggest me the MacBook with its configuration needed in budget to go for?
(Although I am prescient that its gonna be amazing)
Also lastly, what university are you pursuing your MS in CS?
Thank you!
Oh wow ! I don't know plenty about hardware but this looks so much better than my 8GB RAM Laptop lool .. Soon will definitely get a similar Windows PC 🤜 ! Thanks for the video Luke
Ha! Thanks Ibraheem, actually depending on the use case your 8GB Laptop, it may be more than enough, so I wouldn't worry! Thanks for watching!!
Thank you.
@@luisf7105 No problem at all, so glad to hear that I was able to help you start the cert. Good luck with it you got this!
Hello Luke,
Thank you so much for the fabulous, informative and helpful video ever made on RUclips detailing M1 chips from a perspective of a Data-scientist.
I think your fine, plus as I mention in the video, most hard core ML is done in the cloud anyway and you just remote into it with your mac
@@LukeBarousse Thank you so much Luke you saved a lot of money 😊
Is m1 air base model still worth for data science master course, so should i go for m1 pro ??
Hi Luke, Honestly love your content! Great detail and explained in a simple but effective way. luke I have one question is next year 2022 my joining my Master program in Business analysis. my question is I'm debating between Mac or Windows laptop do you suggest? I'm so confused right now can you help me out ??
If you're having doubts and are unsure if Mac will support the applications you need for your master's programs, then I'd just go with a Windows machine. You won't have to worry about about compatibility issues with Windows as most analytical apps are made for Windows so its a safer route.
@@LukeBarousse Thank you so much Luke you're the best!! and any suggestions for a windows laptops under $2000.

just giving my 2 cents. i’m in MSBA and everyone uses macs. sharing code/troubleshooting/etc is so much easier when everyone in your group has the same OS. I actually had issues running R code in RStudio on windows (probably my fault but I just switch back to mac)
Although, i did take advantage of my grad schools “free laptop for a year” just so I could run MS Sql Management Server on a Windows laptop
@@speedyg123. Thanks for sharing this Juke. This is very interesting to hear of everyone using Macs! Also very much agree with making it easier when everybody is on the same OS!

Hello Luke. Please how many hours of use do you get from your laptop (m1 max 14) approximately?
Are you referring to battery life?
Overall I can spend pretty much all day on it unplugged and have no issues until the end of day when my work day is complete.
@@LukeBarousse thanks. please one last question if you don't mind, will allocating 16gb for power bi be enough to work on for relatively large data sets or should i buy the 64gb version and allocate 32gb instead?
@@dareemmanuel6079 I think the 16 gb will be more than enough.

Did you manage to get the airflow containers up and running? I’m running into a SCRAM authentication issue with Postgres
Yeah I had no issues running them in containers on my mac
I still using my 2015 Macbook Pro to learn Python by using Pycharm. Sometime laggy but it get the job done. lol
Are these macbooks good for deep learning?
They can, but I don't do a lot of deep learning, so I may not be the best to ask.
@@LukeBarousse Thank you for the reply! Great content.
@@LukeBarousse if I go outside and run window on my Mac Pro a lot, do you think the fan worth it?
Problem is you can’t install sql express on parallels on the M1 Max on.MacBook pro
Hey Luke
Which version are you using for parallels - standard (one time) or?
i've upgraded to the subscription based on wanting the updates and updated window version
Would installing a parallel on an android phone help me to avoid Microsoft office 365 subscription ? What would you recommend ?
Thanks for this detailed video Luke. I'll like to know if Microsft SQL server works well with Parallels 17 using M1 chip. I currently use a Macbook Pro 2020 M1.
Unfortuantely not through Parallels. You can host it via a container using Docker, but it won't have the GUI of SQL server.
what advantage does macos have over windows for data science?
TBH... not much.. windows is superior for data science from what I've seen. More info here where I compare a mac to windows:
ruclips.net/video/YZkcEtWgMGw/видео.html
Hey Luke, how long have you been running window on your Mac Pro M1, because I wonder if using window on Mac for many years, it might slows down the mac performance, and making the Mac a bit laggy because I don’t want to harm my MacBook Pro for the long term usage
I've been running Windows on a Mac for over a year now and haven't noticed any issues. I haven't really heard this as an issue
The 16GB version is not available in my country.
you can always attach external storage later, you can't add memory; so I typically recommend adding memory first (and then storage as needed)
Well played 15:55

Happily smashed the like button.
Thank you!!
To sum up the processor is not so essential, I am thinking to buy the basic 14inch MacBook Pro M1 pro, do you recommend me to upgrade at least the ram ?
For most data science tasks, I think 16gb should be enough

Hi Luke,
Thank you for your detailed video.
I think 16gb is more than enough to start for coding
I found your video review by chance and my immediate reaction, as someone who frequently needs to do substantial data processing using Excel (and is beyond frustrated with Windows laptop performance), was "at last !". Trouble is, the Excel section of your review was (paraphrasing) 'pretty good, but use a Windows machine is you need some specific functionality'. This tells me almost nothing about the capabilities and relative performance of an M1 Max/Pro, either versus Windows machines, or versus the standard M1 chips. With Excel having such a huge user base I thought you'd cover the performance of this software in far more detail.
ha! I made a previous video that I actually go into a little more detail on Excel's functionality: ruclips.net/video/YZkcEtWgMGw/видео.html
Yeah it's a pretty powerful machine and lasts me all day on a charge
Bought a base 16-inch. Thought about 32 GBs if RAM, but it's quite costy =/
Yeah these M1 Max and Pros are quite expesnive. BUT it is nice to see how affordable the M1's are 🙌🏼
the ports coming back for the m1 pro is tempting me very much lol
Yeah I do like having the SD Card slot... it's come in handy as a creator for me
Were you able to get Windows 10 working under Parallels for the M1 Pro or M1 Max systems? I am under the impression you have to use Windows 11 to work under Parallels on these chips.
Not at all, I had Windows 10 installed previously and just upgraded to Windows 11
@@LukeBarousse I bought the 2021 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max and tried to do a Time Machine install from a 2018 15" MacBook Pro. On my 2018 MBP I had Windows 10 running under Parallels. After the Transfer was complete, I had to sign in and activate on the 2021 MBP M1 Max . Parallels on the 2021 M1 Max would only allow for a Windows 11 install. I had Windows 10 on the 2018 MBP but Windows 11 on the 2021 MBP. What did you do to install the Windows 10 on the 2021 MBP?
@@beachliving3127 Ohh sorry I misunderstood. No I never had Windows 10 installed on my 2021 14" MBP (only my 2020 13" MBP). Is there a reason you need Windows 10 over Windows 11?
@@LukeBarousse My master plan was to get rid of my home based 2009 27” iMac and upgrade my business based 2018 MacBook Pro to the 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max.
I don’t think it is wise to spend a bunch of time working on Windows 11 since I will get rid of all the other machines running windows 10 in a of year or so.
How is it for tensorflow?

I'd still go with the recommendation in my video
Hello Luke! I don't know if you'll read my comment but I hope you can eventually do a review with with the M2 Mac. Please! 🙏🤞
I'm a content creator (which of course includes video editing, recording my screen and illustration) but also I'm currently learning data analyst skills such as Excel and Python.
If I get the M2 i'll review it... but right now I'ms ticking with M1 Max
For parallels you can get either.

I'll mostly use it for data analytics
I'm an epidemiologist i Dont know if there will be difference of speed b/w m1 and m1 pro if its in seconds i dont think m1 pro is worth it again I want a large screen so im totally confused.
I think M1 is good enough
Can I use windows most of the time on the base M1 Air 8GB for beginner development/data analytics through Parallels without any issues as if it's simply a windows laptop?
You could. However if you're using Windows the majority of your time, I would strongly consider trading in for a windows laptop.
Hii ! I need to buy a computer. I am certain I will get a MacBook. I am a little confused with al the options. What’s is the difference between M1 and M2 chips? How much GPU do I need? For using power BI and power query running via parallels and python on m1pro 16”, would 16 gb or 32 gb ram be recommended ?
Really depends on the size data models you are using. If your importing millions of rows, then you want to consider 32gb... however if your just doing everyday data analysis, then I think 16gb is more than enough. I've used 16gb the past year and thought it was fine
@@LukeBarousse what about future proofing ? As for current applications it might be good, however for few years down the road would it be worthwhile to have 32 Gb ram ?
