At 4:25 you talk about a creating a project where you helped other people using office data. If you wanted to share your projects with a potential employer, you can't share data from another company. In a case like this, how would you share the project you created with a potential employer?
In those cases, it's actually not as important to share the physical project IMO. I think what is more important is that you can share generalities about the project, BUT more importantly how your project made an impact on the team/company.
dude I don't know if you know this, but RP came out with a diet app whose greatest strength is taking the feedback you give it (your weigh-ins, satiation levels, meal adherence etc) and dictating the macros you need for the following week. It then uses a large set of basic whole ingredients and foods to help you put your meals together for the week precisely for the new macros, and gives you a shopping list of all the ingredients in their raw form.
Ha! Yeah I have been following them. I was consulting with them before they built the app. But I think they were developing a similar solution at the same time with another team.

Beyond Excel, how did you find what programs to use? Was it what was readily accessible to you right away by purchases, something that employers provided, or did you rely on mostly open source free programs? And how did you come to the conclusion that 'yeah, this is the best program for this'.
it really depends on what your employer and client is using. Throughout my career, I've learned the program that my team uses, whether that is Power BI, Tableau, or Python. It really depends on what the end-user wants the solution in. Some solutions were free and others weren't
@@LukeBarousse Excellent, Luke. My workplace actually has quite a few options available (and I found someone who knows PostGreSQL pretty well, which is one of the many). We also have Tableau and Power BI. I believe that my job in HR (I deal with metrics of incoming and outgoing employees and create business solutions) will lend to me creating useful projects and eventually dashboards. Hope so, anyway.
@Luke Barousse I'm a recent MBA graduate, and I want to know what's the "best" course of action to become a Data Analyst? Should I focus on Excel and MySQL certifications to land an entry level position or should I focus my attention elsewhere?
Hi Luke, I have the exact same same issue as your friend in finance with multiple excel files. Could you please expand a little more on how you solved the problem or direct me in the right direction as my googling efforts have come to a dead end :( Great content too! I'm currently trying to transition my career towards data analytics so your videos are really helpful!
YEah I highly recommend you check out PowerQuery. It's a powerful tool from microsoft that allows you to collect data from multiple excel files and put it into either an excel or power bi file. thanks for the kind words as well!!
Hi Luke Can I ask you if vba is worth it? I didn't find anywhere that VBA is requested. I'd focus more on Python, SQL, Tableu, and some Excel. Unless vba being part of excel hence would be requested for a data analyst. Even though I always read and observed that python, Powerbi, SQL are somehow most used.
Yep, I agree with the skills you outlined above being more important that VBA. It isn't as much requested (and frankly I think it's a little outdated and not nearly as powerful as something like Python). In the example I shared with using excel and VBA, I was taking a college class that required the use of VBA. I used it once after this in a short project and haven't touched it since.
@@LukeBarousse Thank you very much. I appreciate a lot your feedback because actually I gave up using it, as it seemed so limited while R wasn't as catchy as python and less 'friendly'.
Insightful as always Luke! 💯 🔥🙌🏼 I very much liked the Listen-Build-(Feedback ) loop mindset you shared to solve problems. Thanks Michel! So glad this was helpful; And great suggestion on the video idea for building a resume. This is def something i want to cover in a future video so stay tuned!
Hey, Luke! May I ask you a very silly question? There's something I simply don't understand: let's say you build a project, run the analysis and jump into an outcome. Fine. Project finished. What's next? Even if you build a dashboard, it becomes "their" problem because you aim them to self manage their decision making process. Is this right? If so, what is the daily basis activity of a data scientist? Would I be unemployed right after the project is finished? I'm kind of stuck with this doubt. Thabks for your great videos. Greetings from Argentina!
This was eye opening. Just listening works. But I am usually alone at work. And would like some ideas for solo projects for a newbie to programming to go into my portfolio. I don't have a portfolio website for myself, but would like to add the experience on LinkedIn or the likes. I just cannot start working on Upwork because of the shifts I mentioned in your previous video. So I would like to get a little bit of experience in analysis and programming (I am learning R due to the Google Data Analytics Certificate) so I need lots of time for the projects. Are there any DIY Data projects for newbies like me? I searched Google but the projects mentioned there are either too difficult as I am new to programming or are very time consuming. I was thinking maybe I should just ask my boss to give me sales data from his business and then talk with you on how to approach the analysis, if he even agrees to provide the data to me. Other than that, I just can't seem to get working on my portfolio. My Google Certification Capstone took me almost 2 months to complete due to time limitations. I am sorry for my really long comments, I wish I could TL;DR them, but the TL;DR would remove the details that would make a person comprehend my situation on a fundamental level. This is Saudi Arabia. There is no team here. Expats just are thrown into a job and expected to do everything. My boss comes around at 11 usually. And we also have to do his job on the maintenance part. Basically, I do the job of my immediate Supervisor and he handles everything for the boss. And being Saudi Arabia, we cannot even raise our voice, because there is no rights here for expats, like literally. I hope you have a clearer picture of my situation. I have my family to take care of. And little to no savings. If I had savings, I wouldn't have stayed here. Most of my earnings go to my family to support them with the help of my sisters living in the US because I earn very less. They are trying to get me to the US but I cannot get a work visa if I have no experience and maintenance planner experience in Gulf nations are not appreciated there is no exposure to technical work in Gulf countries.
And the worst part of my job is that most people I do interact with are uneducated technicians from mostly Southeast Asian countries. I wish I hand't accepted this job in the first place. 4 years and I have learned how to work for others without any pay whatsoever. It had made me hate desk jobs because this is all there is to desk jobs, just work for bosses, have nothing to do with technical stuff unless you work in big companies like Google or NASA. But seeing you, Thu Vu, and your friends and others on RUclips and LinkedIn had given me hope for data analysis. The same thing happened with my CCNA, I saw an opportunity for it in the Saudi labor market, studied for 2 years and then when I finally got my cert, COVID-19 hit. And then Saudization hit me harder than COVID-19. I think I should just contact UNHCR to take me in as a refugee to some other country, LOL, at least there I can be around more people like you perhaps and learn from them.
WEll I think the biggest thing that you should commend yourself for is that you haven't given up. There are plenty of self-guided proects out there that you can check out. Many on RUclips and i've done more on platforms like Coursera and DataCamp. They are great for having you follow a plan to complete. BUT I really like this idea of getting data from your boss, as this would be a project you can use your current experience for. So I'd go for this! Keep your head up; you got this!
Dude, you developed RP? That’s helped a lot. I mean the app needs a lot of work because it won’t let you restart diets if stuff changes. But it is still a awesome diet planner.
Oh sorry, to be clear, I didn't develop the mobile app or develop the RP diet, perse. Just back when they were using excel templates to make you plan your diet, I made an this solution as an easier method to plan your meals and track your macros!
@@LukeBarousse Yeah, the downside is if you make a few mistakes or go back to re-tweak your diet plan more than twice it locks you out and you have to get in contact with them to reset it. Which is a huge "eh I learned what I needed to from this application, I don't need to pay for something that doesnt let me restart diets based on different stuff". Oh well.
Hey Luke I wanted to ask quick- do you think R- shiny apps are worth investing time and effort into? Mainly curious as to how I can leverage different r skills to stand out with employers. Thanks in advance!
Hey Jon, yeah, I think they can be; depending on if your employer/client will adapt to using them. R (and shiny apps) are very popular ways to communicate data insights. 'Thu Vu' has more content on her channel around this topic area and I suggest you check it out!
It really depends on the client and what format they want it in. If it is my boss; i'm probably giving her the insights via a power point; if its a client that is familiar with a tool; it may be just the code itself that I used. It really can truly vary depending on the client. BUT communication is always the key soft-skill needed when sharing these insights
Hope you're doing well also, Bouseux! Sorry I've been absent for a little bit, went on a vacation for a little bit; BUT I should have a video launching this Friday (if everything goes right... ha). Thanks for checking in on me I appreciate it!!
Hi Luke What should I do after learn excel? I can use excel and visualization in excel also but I don't know what I need to do next !!! I heard that I can work as a data analysis with excel in the beginning but if I have data in an excel worksheet how can I know where to start?
I would get into learning SQL next as I discuss in this video: ruclips.net/video/CC66RXeTn_4/видео.html While doing this make sure you're building up your portfolio!
Hi Luke, I'm an industrial engineering student graduating next year and got really interested in the field of data. I've been researching data analytics and data science and trying to figure out which one I should focus on. While studying I currently work at a marketing agency and work with the analytics for Google ads, Facebook ads, and Google Analytics. Would you recommend me to focus on learning the data analytics part, or the data science part? I want to combine industrial engineering knowledge with data skills to really stand out in my career.
It's really depends on whta your interest relies for either looking at data analytics or data science. For me, I more analyzing data; so data analytics is where I go. Those in Data science typically have a different (or even broader approach). I don't want to tell you what your passion is in; but personally I think the data analytics would be an easier path to start for what you are wanting to do with marketing.
@@LukeBarousse Thank you for the response! I've thought about focusing on Analytics because Industrial Engineering is mostly that from what I've observed. From what I've seen until now, I believe I should learn to learn the programming languages required to get more deeply into the raw data.
@@La_Maquina806 In this case i'd focus on the data analytics part over data science in general. Data Science can be a very broad area that includes many subject areas (like data analytics). So it sounds like you are on the correct path.
I don't have a template to share, so sorry... mainly just my own finances in an excel sheet that I curated for my use. It wasn't to hard to build and I think it's a great project to undertake.
Luke, your videos are so interesting and insightful :) Thanks a lot. Currently, I am figuring out which career path should I take? My MBTI personality type is INFP-T. I am in a befuddled state, not sure which should I choose between Data Analyst or Full Stack Developer ( Web Development ) Could you please share your thoughts? Would like to hear from you. Thanks in advance!!
Hey Anand, I'll be honest I'm partial to data analytics, but that's' just because of the career path I chose and what I'm working in currently. Not sure I am the best for helping you choose between the two, but I can say I love the field of data analytics and have no regrets in pursuing this.
Ha! No I wish I did! I just made and application on Excel to make it easier to pick foods, when RP used to provide their templates via excel spreadsheets

it really depends on what your employer and client is using.
@Luke Barousse
I'm a recent MBA graduate, and I want to know what's the "best" course of action to become a Data Analyst? Should I focus on Excel and MySQL certifications to land an entry level position or should I focus my attention elsewhere?
Hey Manuel! Here is the video I recommend for that: ruclips.net/video/aqRxZSrJLEc/видео.html
Hi Luke, I have the exact same same issue as your friend in finance with multiple excel files. Could you please expand a little more on how you solved the problem or direct me in the right direction as my googling efforts have come to a dead end :(
Great content too! I'm currently trying to transition my career towards data analytics so your videos are really helpful!
YEah I highly recommend you check out PowerQuery. It's a powerful tool from microsoft that allows you to collect data from multiple excel files and put it into either an excel or power bi file.
thanks for the kind words as well!!
nice video, quick one what's the most convenient way to run Power Bi on Mac ?
I use Parallels as a Virtual Machine on my mac
4:10 essbase error? Is that Hyperion?
No I don't think so
how do u use power bi on mac .
8:37 totally missed to insert the sponge bob "2 hours later" meme :D
🤣 Dangit! I should have! 😂
I very much liked the Listen-Build-(Feedback ) loop mindset you shared to solve problems. I’m taking notes! 😆
Also, as a suggestion, maybe you can add to your list of content how can one be part of the data analyst/data science YT group (like with you, Ken Jee, Tina, etc.)? Haha! 😆
P.S. PowerBI video anytime soon? Haha 😋✌🏼and btw, Pokemon cards (Charmander) spotted! Last time was the gameboy. I wonder what’s next, Tamagochi?
Thanks for this Rem!!
Regarding Power BI, I am planning on doing a dedicated video in the next couple of months; so stay tuned!!
That Tamagochi; comment got me 😂😂😂 I was actually more of a Digimon person... I gotta see if I can find that thing now that you said that!!
Mannn those vids are sooo helpful, pleaseee keep going, this channel is great, can you make a vid on good resumes l, like where to place your github profile link ad where to place your certificates and projects i am struggling to make a good data analyst resumecan you please help?
Greetings from Argentina!
building dashboard is the "fun" part, 80% time you are arguing with clients about their requests,
I am wondering. How you could run PowerBI on a Mac ?
I use a virtual machine, Parallels
the biggest difficult i have is finding the raw data for my project ideas.
@@LukeBarousse ah okay makes sense. My buddy used it while it was excel and got me on it when the app came out.
@@Warpgatez You were fortunate to start it then! 😅 Love me some RP tho, I'm still following the concepts of this diet to this day.
@@LukeBarousse You’re an outstanding human being luke, thanks again!
Background song's ?
Hi, Can I get your meal macros calculator spread sheet somehow?
Link is in description 🙌🏼
Hey Luke, first of all thank you for your videos. How would you send your results to your client? In a PDF with Explanations?
It really depends on the client and what format they want it in. If it is my boss; i'm probably giving her the insights via a power point; if its a client that is familiar with a tool; it may be just the code itself that I used. It really can truly vary depending on the client. BUT communication is always the key soft-skill needed when sharing these insights

LOL "Did I wake you? Oh that's nice" 🤣
😂🤣 Well, we gotta get you in a future vid, Miki! But I promise I won't call and wake you to do it in the middle of the night!
Hope you are doing well Luke. It’s been a while. Take care
Hope you're doing well also, Bouseux! Sorry I've been absent for a little bit, went on a vacation for a little bit; BUT I should have a video launching this Friday (if everything goes right... ha). Thanks for checking in on me I appreciate it!!
Hi Luke
What should I do after learn excel?
I can use excel and visualization in excel also but I don't know what I need to do next !!!
I heard that I can work as a data analysis with excel in the beginning but if I have data in an excel worksheet how can I know where to start?
I would get into learning SQL next as I discuss in this video: ruclips.net/video/CC66RXeTn_4/видео.html
While doing this make sure you're building up your portfolio!
@@LukeBarousse thanks for the advice 🌸
Thank you for the video also it's amazing 🌟
@@magns2623 Aw I appreciate this!! 🙌🏼
Luke that Pandas 🐼 T-shirt is so cool. Where did you buy it? I want it lol 😂
🤣 ha thanks Daniel, I love this tshirt too! It's actually on Amazon! amzn.to/3Cp29xd
Maybe one day i'll have my own merch
I was in banking sales but i want to switch to data analytics what to do
A lot of great projects can be found in banking!
Do you have financial tracker application you made? Can you share it ? I want to track my finances.
I am in a befuddled state, not sure which should I choose between Data Analyst or Full Stack Developer ( Web Development )
Could you please share your thoughts? Would like to hear from you.
Thanks in advance!!
Hey Anand, I'll be honest I'm partial to data analytics, but that's' just because of the career path I chose and what I'm working in currently. Not sure I am the best for helping you choose between the two, but I can say I love the field of data analytics and have no regrets in pursuing this.
@@LukeBarousse Luke, I deeply appreciate your reply to the message. :)
Wait... You built the RP Diet app??
Ha! No I wish I did! I just made and application on Excel to make it easier to pick foods, when RP used to provide their templates via excel spreadsheets
so how do I secure a job as data analyst through doing these kinds of projects ? I wanna standout in my resume
Yes! I feel like projects (like the one’s we demonstrated here) are more impactful than a degree or training alone. It helps show that you not only know the skills but also that you can apply them in a real world scenario 🙌🏼
@@LukeBarousse Thank you
