I am currently studying to be a data analyst with no background in data at all. I was recommended this book and I am over halfway through so far. It is absolutely fantastic! It really helped me to organize and rethink the way I think about data which lowered my stress levels as I was overwhelmed with the learning process. I have also bought the companion book, which has excercies, and I will be reading it after I finish the current one.
This video reminds me of a concept I learned on Dataquest called "data-ink ratio." Data-ink ratio is the idea of using the least amount of ink to communicate the most amount of data. So data : ink. Decades ago, when we used newspapers, it was a real art to craft a graph which used little ink and conveyed lots of data. An example of this would be placing the column titles at 9:10 in your video into the bars themselves, then coloring them to match the background. Also, making that very same text bigger. This would reduce the ink in a newspaper, but it has the effect of communicating each bar as an identity too. Your eyes won't need to dart left to right so much, making it easier to read. You could also experiment with making the text's size match the bar's size. So SQL would be spaced a little, but also huge, that way it uses more of the bar. Excel would do the same, but not quite as big. Doing this, you reduce the ink used for a newspaper. For our electronic, modern approach to consuming data, it just becomes another method of communicating the relative size of importance each skill has. Very, very timely video. I'm 99% finished with my data analyst course on Dataquest. Just one more %! Then I need to learn Excel and either Tableau or Power BI. I was leaning towards Tableau, but this video made me rethink Power BI. Choices! Thank you for another excellent video.
I like this term of "data-ink ratio" such a very valid point and I think you made some great examples above. Sounds like you're on a great track! Don't worry about the selection of Tableau or Power BI, both of them are great options!
@@tak0331 Just looked it up as I'd never used Charticulator before. It looks interesting as it can help you with complex visualizations... but I still feel (at least initially) that what Power BI offers natively is good enough to get the job done.

Part of the reason pie charts aren’t great has to do with how well humans perceive area. Humans are better at perceiving length than area, and better at area than volume. I don’t remember the name of the book, but it kinda of explains this my saying that visualizations are people using the physical space as a metaphor for numbers. The more complicated you make the metaphor, the more it become confusing rather than explanatory. Have been reading reviews of this book and thought I would someday read it. But after this video, I just had to do it. Now I am going to listen to it, you read it right. Listen to it (audiobook), although I know I will be missing all the visual effects of it.
Yeah this one is a bit harder to listen to, as you need the visuals to accompany it for some of the parts. I do still think you can get value out of listening to it..
8:35 If you take a moment and just look at this whole still image, then yeah, seems like blue is his favorite color. It's a very good- looking scenery, anyway.
I'm going to need to print off a pie chart and cut it into little segments next time I'm exlaining to someone how difficult it is to present 4+ categories with them! If you want to keep the circle shape you could always organize your categories into race plots ( geom_bar in ggplot). Either way hope you don't mind me using this pie chart analogy in meetings (plagirism is the biggest form of complements).
Hey Luke, there’s another (from the same author) book called “Storytelling with data: let’s practice” The author says that it works like a companion guide with the original book ( the one that you mentioned on the video). So I think it’s a great idea to read both books at the same time.
I actually am going through the Let's practice right now! So thanks for recommending this. may have to make a follow up video to report on this. Thanks Miguel!

Hello mister Barousse. I am a high school student who is soon to transition into college. I am very interested in data science and so I was doing some research on how to get started. Your videos have played a heavy impact on my first few steps. I have seen that you made videos in the past about certificates from Coursera which I found very interesting and helpful. However, I was hoping that you could make a video about courses to take from EdX that will prepare me to getting an internship/entry level part or full time job, as well as make my resume very inclining towards colleges and recruiters. In the video, please include which courses to take first and then which course to follow it up with and so on. :)
Hey Luke! Awesome video, i saw you had some on setting up Power BI on a Mac using Parallel, Virtual Machines or Windows Operating system install i think it was. What is your current set up for running SQL and PowerBI on your Mac? Would be cool to see a Data Analysts approach/set up for the New Macbook M1s
Haha I thought the Morning Brew skit was golden, definitely not your last sponsored video! I've been binge watching your videos after looking into the data analyst career path. Currently 29 with a 3 yr old toddler, making $40k a year. Got a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies with a plan to teach math and science but with the way things are going in the education system at the moment I don't think it will end up happening. Currently managing an Electrical Contractor Service Company in Texas coordinating projects for Electricians and procuring materials from various sources for efficient project management. Luke, do you think that it would be possible to make a career change into data analytics with what I've done so far? I pretty much use Excel on a daily basis and am making an effort to master it a bit more but am really considering also picking up SQL and then maybe getting into the Google Data Analytics Cert course. I just want to make sure my family has a comfortable life and would like to put my brain to good use for that same reason. I feel like my skills and potential are being wasted here especially since the owner of the company is planning on retiring in the next 6 years. Thanks for you videos, giving me hope for the future.
I feel that it’s more than possible to change careers based on this! What would make it more likely is if you can find a data analyst roles that is within the industry that you have experience in, such as like the service industry. I’ve see a lot of people have success when they can use their past industry experience and transition into a role that requires more data analytical skills. It will just take some searching on your part. Hope this helps!
Great question! Unfortunately, Power BI doesn't offer this natively... so I had to screen shot the legend and then add them manually to the visual.... inconvenient but it helps get the point across to stakeholders faster.

@@hannahmatias if I start drinking and filming, I think my youtube channel would come to an end real quickly... 🤣😂
Love your sketches❤❤❤
Thanks Antonio!
Great work Luke!
Thanks, Arham!
Thank you . I asked too many times question about reading a book for data analytics. No one answered me.
Happy to help!
Really good insights! I'll have to check it out:)
Thanks Rick! 🙌🏼
Well I got the idea from this book, so I don't mind at all actually 🤣 And I am flattered! 🙌🏼
I Love your channel.... Love and respect from India 🇮🇳🙏
Hmmm just a question, one of the pictures in the fram from 2:44, isnt that Tina from the RUclips channel Tina Huang?
It is, I love to binge watch Tina's channel! Sort of an inside joke that I started in this video: ruclips.net/video/y3TxcejHw-4/видео.html
A brill video, Luke!
Thank you Stephen!
@@LukeBarousse Thanks to you for the dedication to your youtube channel, it has really helped me to have clear what skills I must learn to perform as a data analyst. I really found this particular video a good idea, I think it would also be good that in the future you could recommend other books that helped you in other aspects, such as improving your analytical skills.
P.D I hope you understood my message, as you can see my native language is not English hahaha.
@@Miguel-zz1vv Actually, I understood it perfectly! Let me see what I can do about other book recommendations! I think this is a great idea, so thank you for this!
Awesome to hear your passion at such a young age!! Keep up the hard work!
And let me see what I can do on the EdX content!
Great video!
U show a Best Visualisation software diagram displaying Bi and Tableau but the diagram looks suspicously (somewhat) like the Python Logo 6:07 ...
I didn't even notice that! Ha!
Great sketch!
🤣 Thank you!!
Hi Luke, nice vide but how did you extract data from LinkedIn? Is there a website where we can see these statistics?
Great video as always!
Aw thank you!!
Literally just searched your channel, and i saw you recently posted some content on this! Will check it out :D
Heck yeah!! Glad you found the videos, thanks for taking the time to look as well!! Let me know if you still have any questions!
Nice storytelling about how to storytale with data
😜
Thank you
No probs!!
Other data analysts hate him for this one trick..
🤣 May have to change the title to this 🤣
This is great!
Thanks Claire!
Amazing video!
Thank Matheus!
This was such a good book. Any other Recommendations?

Some of my other recommendations!
Thanks
how did you put the legend on the actual line chart - 8:55 min ?? thank you in advance
Great question! Unfortunately, Power BI doesn't offer this natively... so I had to screen shot the legend and then add them manually to the visual.... inconvenient but it helps get the point across to stakeholders faster.
Great sharing! What other books to share? Thankssss
Check this out for more recommendations: kit.co/lukebarousse/book-recommendations
I am reading the book now. Will recommend to my team.
@@MrKensiu heck yeah!!
