This victory by Marion Bartoli was no fluke in 2007 Bartoli beat Justine Henin in the semifinals and lost to Venus in the final. Bartoli also beat Serena in straight sets two years ago. Give Bartoli credit she did not choke but Sabine did. I think Sabine let the media hype get to her head as the favourite to win.

Lisicki wasn't a big favorite, though. It was more about who she had beaten to get to that final, really. Bartoli was clearly the superior player, as your examples show. Lisicki never sniffed a singles major after, and only once before. Only 4 titles total.

The only thing Bartoli can control, is her fate in each of her matches. She was faced with 7 opponents and she dispatched of 7 opponents in straight sets to become Wimbledon champion. Period. End of discussion.

In my opinion Bartoli's Wimbledon win is further proof that both the mens and womens tour needs more grass court tournaments.
Bartoli had beaten a ton of great players on grass, Serena, Kvitova, Henin, and Jankovic to name her biggest scalps. She is clearly a great grass court player yet those who are proficient on the surface only get 3 (now 4) tournaments to show this.
Alas a great win for Bartoli, the ultimate grass court title for a great grass court player.

    • @ft3265

The fact is that hardly anyone---professionals or amateurs---plays grass regularly. Clay and HC are vastly more popular.

@sperrotta91 it's because maintaining grass is very expensive and hence not many venues offer that. More faster hard courts/indoor tournaments could be an alternative

My favourite players are Serena and Roger who might retire both in 2022. But I don't like their favourite surface grass. Tennis is way better to watch when played on clay. And even more to play on, at least for me as a hobby player

I was very happy for Marion to win this, and still like watching this highlight from time to time. A very unique player in her time.
As for the discussion about her having an easy draw: She wasn't picked as a favorite to win many of these matches, first of all, so she outperformed all expectations. Second, her draw looks a lot stronger on retrospect.
Svitolina in round 1? She was young, but we all know she went on to be a very consistent top player on tour, with an eventual SF appearance in Wimbledon, making this a very talented youngster to face in a first round. Giorgi in round 3? Grass is Giorgi's best surface, and she was an eventual quarterfinalist, as well as already having made the 4th round in 2012. Sloane Stephens in the QF? This is an eventual slam winner who was already a slam semi-finalist earlier in 2013. Flipkens SF? From 2006-2022 Flipkens has a 57% win rate in the Wimbledon main draw. She has consistently performed decently at Wimbledon. Lisicki herself actually had about a 80% win rate at Wimbledon in 2013 coming into that match. She had a phenomenal career performance in Wimbledon, and Bartoli was a surprise upset for many. Bartoli did not play any all-time greats, but these are not terrible players she faced.

Saying that Bartoli played better than Lisicki is simply not true. Let's look at the way to the final of Lisicki. She played Schiavone, Stosur, Serena, Radwanska. In that 3 players have all gotten a grand slam, one was the defending champion, seed no.1 and one was reigning runner-up. If Lisicki played in the final like in the match with Serena Williams, it would definitely be REALLY tough for Bartoli to win. Lisicki was just overwhelmed by pressure of the final I think.

  • @jonathankieranwriter

I have always liked Sabine and root for her despite injuries both emotional and severely physical. But I have sometimes gotten the sense that she is perhaps “too nice” in terms of temperament to lift her game to that level wherein a major championship might be possible for her. She’s a fine, powerful player at her best, but all the great champions have that underlying thread of killer instinct and an almost pathological hunger to show no mercy to any opponent in pursuit of the big prize. But that’s one of the many reasons why sport (and tennis in particular) has been classified as a metaphor for human life and ambition. Lisicki is apparently attempting another comeback. She’s probably way past her sell-by date, but hopefully she can summon a little magic before the end. Winning even one title or perhaps making a surprise, spirited run to the second week at Wimbledon would do a lot for her sense of self going into whatever phase of life awaits after tennis. I wish her the best-seems like such a sweet person.
As for Marion, she was simply tenacious and brilliant during that fortnight and it’s difficult to think of a more deserving champion who was also a scrappy, unlikely veteran. Superbly done, and she will well-and-truly go down in history for that Wimbledon triumph.

Congratulations,Marion! If anybody besides Serena had to win the 2013 Wimbledon, I'm glad Marion Bartoli did.Mainly because seeing her makes me smile when I think of her Hilarious Wimbledon match vs.Justine Henin-- and Marion's post match comments!LOL
Justine had been dominating Marion during the match when Marion looked up to see "James Bond" (the Brosnan version) avidly cheering for her. Marion later said, " I was playing so badly for heem!" Inspired she began to hit winners EVERYWHERE. LOL

Btw, since you don't know too much about Marion, she never used to bounce the ball before the serve. Then when she was having a TON of success in 2011 commentators kept saying "Why doesn't she bounce the ball even once before serving?" So then she added a bounce or two and I think it messed up her rhythm, and she took it out again.
Why would Lisicki winning have been better for tennis?? Lisicki will have her chances again. She's young.

Félicitations, Marion! Sure, perhaps Lisicki "deserved" to win after beating Serena and Radwanska, but does anyone remember Sam Stosur's run at Rolland Garros a few years ago? She beat Serena and Justine Henin, then lost to Francesca Schiavone in the final. You never hear anyone discount the legitimacy of Schiavone's French open title; so we should all be giving Marion Bartoli her due, too. Bravo!

It's not luck winning Wimbledon or any other Grand Slam. Whoever plays in the finals deserves to be there, and whoever wins, deserves to win. Top ten players aren't always going to win the big titles all the time, they are more likely to though as they have proven to a formidable competitors in the scene, hence why they are the top ten. If a top ten player loses, they deserve to lose because obviously they're not good enough to go all the way to win the grand slam at that time.

I was shocked that Lisicki didn't win this match. Lisicki has been very disappointing.I thought she was going to be great when I first saw her playing.

I agree to an extent. I was expecting a good match, I just couldn't comprehend why she choked that bad. she beat the no.1, beat radswanka and schivone I mean why couldn't she use that positive energy. I guess her team didn't prepare her well for the final.

some of them just do really well at wimbledon and she is one of them, and i dont think she is a fluke, cause year after year she does very well there

And FYI Seles only made one Wimbledon final and generally didn't have a good record there. Undoubtedly she is one of the all time greats. All the more reason why you ought to actually consider a player's game instead of trying to argue from her past record that she is just lucky and has only a few skills, etc.

Marion desrved it because she handled herself better. That part of being a champion, and Lisicki will be ina better position next time. I am confident there will be a next time if she get help handling her emotions. She was over emotional because deep down she didn't beleive she was good enough and kept suprising herself.with those victories over Serena and Radwanska. When she kept saying "I am overwhelmed" I had a feeling the occassion might be too much for her. But it was good experience.

Henin was NOT bad on grass. are you kidding me?? she was twice a finalist and reached the semis in 3 other times in Wimbledon, plus she has won 4 singles titles on grass.
Maybe it is not her best surface, but she is in no way bad on grass.

How come the women's finals is decided in 2 sets but the men's are decided in 3 sets?
