Good video . I've been a plumber for over 40 years and experience is accumulated , but also a " plumber's touch ". Great tutorial. I’m going on my THIRD replacement of this valve...they seem to fail every 3-4 years. One big tip...contact Koehler and they will send you replacement parts at no cost. My first replacement with a plumber cost over $1,000 in parts and labor on all the valves I needed replaced. He gave me the tip to get free replacement parts and do it myself. 👍🏼
Excellent video!! I do a lot of my own repairs but plumbing and I haven't always been a good match and I was a little intimidated when I first looked for information of changing the cartridge in a Kohler faucet and one response said it could be a little tricky and it might be good to call a professional. But then I found this video which was excellent and made the job very easy. Thank you!
Just want to thank you for your awesome video. I’m not great at home repairs but have been getting more confident in trying to do my own. This video helped me tremendously fix my tub faucet which has been leaking for years. So thank you.
The previous homeowner (fellow DIYer) had done the bathroom remodel themselves and tiled over the faceplate on the mixer valve. A simple fix became a bit more complicated when I had to start cutting tile. I removed just enough tile to wiggle the old plate out and then opted to use the new one that came with the new part. Smaller and easier to install with less fuss. I spent $100 on parts because my local Ace hardware was the only store with both components in stock that was open on a Sunday. Looks like it would have been closer to $75 at Lowes, Home depot, or Amazon but all of those options would have taken a few days. Nothing like a same day fix thank you for the clear and straight forward video!
I was apprehensive about doing the cartridge replacement. The Kohler kit I got had the metal mounting ring, which threw me off...until I watched your video. And, like you, I found a missing O ring and tiny container of silicone grease inside the housing. Thanks for pointing that out. I've finished, tested, and everything works without the old leak. Thank you so much!
My pleasure! It must’ve been forgotten, so I’m happy to hear you went and got some. You definitely want to lubricate O-rings in gaskets before you install the cartridge.

Good vid! 2 notes: 1. The Kohler "new" balancer have oval seats for the o ring, whereas the perch in the wall is a circle... Hope this is a design improvement. 2. Kohler gives you and advises to lube the o rings with silicone before installation.
So I got the same part on Mercari (new and actual Koehler brand) for $22 total…a steal! When installing the mixer the short screws on the left and right were tough, they barely reached. I had to really push the mixer piece in hard to get the screws to catch into the plate…Maybe it was just the way the whole bathroom was done originally I guess? This was my first shot at any type of plumbing repair. Anyways I have the mixer in and working, and it doesn’t seem to be leaking behind the wall and into the basement below….I lifted up ceiling tiles to look and make sure…Out of all the how to videos online yours was the one that made me feel like “ok I can do this”. Yo BJ! My leak is gone! Thanks for the great instruction and all the tips! I thought that the new regulator was the wrong one becuz the o.rings that sandwiched on the valve was an oval shape and not a circle like the old one, but after reading the instructions it said it would be slightly different shaped. i even tried putting the old regulator back with the new o.rings and it still leaked😅 but it's good now. Thanks again🤙🏽
Great video. For those of us replacing on a K-304 valve note that if the valve body has separated (section with spring loaded balancing valves) just buy a new one. This was a 20 year old shower so it makes sense.
Thanks so much for your very informative video! Each detail was spot-on throughout the entire process. Couldn't have done it without you! Thanks again!!
One tip: The white threaded collar can be difficult to remove. There is interference between the front edge of the white collar and the front edge of the actual black valve. Put a screw driver under the rear of the collar where it touches the metal hold-down ring and gently pry it. It will literally just pop off. It may resist but, I have replaced two Kohler valves exactly like this and it worked for both....without breaking the white collar.
Great video! Like others here, I’m going to replace the same parts in one of our showers. In this case, we only have cold water. Guessing a cartridge issue. Thanks again - video gives me confidence to do the job myself!
My pleasure David! More than likely it’s just the cartridge, however be sure to replace the balancing spool that comes with it because that could potentially be the problem as well. Good luck I hope everything goes smoothly!

Thank you for the compliment, Anthony! Yeah, but eventually no matter what brand shower valve you have something will leak and need to be replaced. At least replacing the Kohler cartridge is relatively easy to do yourself. I hope the video is helpful and makes it easier!
Excellent that’s great I’m always happy to hear when things go nice and smooth! A lot of people have been able to do this job themselves. I hope I don’t run in to a gang of Plumbers in a dark alley. 😂😂
@@BJPoznecki BJ, got it all back together, small trickle, changed to original retainer, all tight(thickness!) New components have smaller(save water holes) in first ports touching brass housing. Thanks, again…great video and encouragement!
Great Video. I replaced mine, and it no longer drips. The white plastic handle adapter didn't just slip off. I took the whole mixer and adapter off, the popped the valve out by rapping the stem with a hammer. And for the life of me, I can't figure out how the mixer/valve assembly works.
I got hot/cold backwards: hottest is when nudging handle from 6 o'clock toward 9 o'clock. I belive I had cold oriented RIGHT. My plumbing was DIY from previous owner, and I guess he got it wrong. Wish I had checked? Not really, this way you know you're not goveroring hot. Also, the bit about flushing out for 10 seconds is put-on, right? In an enclosed plexi shower, it would likely blow out a panel. Mine sprayed so severely the towels I used to sop the water were too heavy to pick up without extensive wringing. The good new is my bathroom floor has never been so clean. Thanks!
How about a similar video showing the Kohler "shower only" type of valve. This would be Kohler part # K-8304-KS or similar. They are quite different from the shower/tub valves. Keep up the good work.
2:47. I’m stuck here. My white plastic piece won’t come off any I’m afraid to force it too hard. It looks similar to yours but there are 4 small black clips around it.
so make sure you put the tab facing up.. I spent 2 hours flipping the internal valve around before I figured out I was putting the mixing valve on upside down... would have been done in 20 minutes if I realized it. Kohler.. maybe put an arrow on this thing....
Great job, but should I be concerned that your faucet was dripping at end? Also, replacing the old crystal style faucet handle - do you know if there is a good new brass handle that fits these valves?
Thanks for posting this video. I didn't entirely follow your comments regarding the O-ring. When you were discussing that topic, were you showing us the old cartridge or the new one? Are you saying that the replacement cartridge kits do not come with the required O-rings and that we need to re-use the old ones?
Great demonstration. I did exactly as you did. When all done, turned water on from under tub and faucet had running water before turning faucet on and unable to turn water off except by turning all water off. Where did I go wrong?
Do all the Kohler single handles have the same cartridge? A friend told me I needed the part # by unscrewing the 2 screws. My Kohler handle looks very similar to this one.
No, Kohler single-handle shower valves don't all use the same cartridge. The type of cartridge can vary depending on the model and the age of the valve. It's important to check the specific model number of your shower valve to find the correct cartridge. If you have the model number, you can look it up on the Kohler website or contact their customer service for the exact information.
Great video Mr. Poznecki. My problem is the front piece is just jammed probably due to hard water. And I don't want to break anything. So how do I take the top piece out with some pressure?
Thank you Fred! Use this link to look up what style valve matches yours. You’ll have to take apart the trim and handle to expose the cartridge for identification. support.kohler.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001006373-Identify-a-Single-Control-Bath-Shower-Valve
Thank you, your video saved me a plumber's charge. It seems like my leak could have been corrected with new "O" rings for 50 cents instead of a $52 cartridge. Do they sell O-ring replacements?
My pleasure happy to hear the video was helpful! I believe they sell just an o- ring replacement kit at Ace Hardware, if they don’t bring the O-rings in and one of the guys behind the service counter I should be able to get you matching sizes from their O-ring assortment kits they have.
Thank you Jim! You’ll have to retrace your steps and start over either the balancing spool or cartridge are reversed and to be rotated 180°. Now, sometimes I do see the plumbers install the shower valve in reverse because there may be a bathroom that backs up to this bathroom, or they accidentally installed it upside down, to where the cartridge and balancing spool have to be intentionally installed in reverse which is rotated 180° in order to work properly. If that’s the case what I would do is Google Kohler single handle shower valve installation instructions and follow those steps because every shower valve is a little bit different and I don’t want to misguide you. Hope this helps!
I am in the process of replacing a mixer from back in the mid-2000’s. Started leaking recently. I have had to adjust for full hot water as well have the hot water heater temperature low so full hot is not really that hot (despite the warning on the label).

Thanks we did it with your help
Good thorough instructions. Thanks.
@@deardaughter I would play it safe and call a plumber.
This helped so much! Thanks!
My pleasure happy to help!
Great video!
Awesome video, thank you!
Thank you for the compliment!
Great video. Now I feel like I can replace mine. We shall see 🤪
Thorough job! I appreciate it!
so make sure you put the tab facing up.. I spent 2 hours flipping the internal valve around before I figured out I was putting the mixing valve on upside down... would have been done in 20 minutes if I realized it. Kohler.. maybe put an arrow on this thing....
Yeah, good point Scott!
My pleasure! Sorry for any confusion, yes, the new cartridge kit comes with all the O-rings needed.
Great demonstration. I did exactly as you did. When all done, turned water on from under tub and faucet had running water before turning faucet on and unable to turn water off except by turning all water off. Where did I go wrong?
I don’t know I would just start over and redo it. If you still continue to have issues then I would just call a plumber.
Lifesaver. Got to last step, brass fitting screw is MIA. got spec?
Answer: 1/2"x1/8"
It’s hard to say without being there. With your situation, I would just play it safe and call a plumber.
Very helpful video.
Thanks Phil!!
Excellent video. How did you identify the needed replacement part? Thank you.
Thank you Fred!
Use this link to look up what style valve matches yours. You’ll have to take apart the trim and handle to expose the cartridge for identification.

@@BJPoznecki Thanks BJ, I will remember the o-rings the next time it leaks. The cartridge installation was easy. Have a great new year.

Happy New Year George! 🥃
I watched your video and it was a big help, only problem was when I turned it back on, hot and cold were opposite, do I need to reverse the regulator?
@@BJPoznecki thanks, I reversed it 180 and it's the right way now!!!
@@jamesclark149 Excellent good to hear mission accomplished!
I am in the process of replacing a mixer from back in the mid-2000’s. Started leaking recently. I have had to adjust for full hot water as well have the hot water heater temperature low so full hot is not really that hot (despite the warning on the label).

Great video I have a project like this at my moms house this weekend
Are most of the valves standard size?
Thank you! No, you’ll have to figure out which brand and model shower valve you have.
@@BJPoznecki thank you
