I did a lot of research and went with ecobee. I have no problems with it so far.

I like the look and simplicity of Nest. If you have a smaller home or condo, I think Nest is the better option.

I have / play with both. The Nest from a looks perspective does win over Ecobee. It has the "cool" factor. I describe Ecobee as more functional looking. I have a dual fuel multi-stage system. I like that the Nest, on its home screen, shows what stage of heat or cool is active. With Ecobee, the home screen just indicates the heat or cool is active. You have to go down a level in the screens to see what stage is actually active at that time. Regarding the sensors, Ecobee blows Nest away. It is almost like Nest just threw in some sensors without much thought to try and complete with Ecobee. The Nest sensors do not include motion as well as they use a fixed schedule for when each sensor is used. For example, the night schedule is 9 pm to 7 am and you cannot change it. I go to bed about 10:30 but due to the fixed sensor schedule, I can only chose to switch to the bedroom sensor at 9 pm. You can also only use 1 sensor per schedule. Ecobee sensors include motion. You can also use multiple sensors for a comfort setting and it will average across the sensors to determine when to cycle the system on and off. Also, when a schedule change is 30 minutes away and the schedule includes a different sensor, it will gradually phase in the sensor associated with the upcoming schedule change over the next 30 minutes rather than an abrupt change to another sensor. This is nice, for example, when switching from my den sensor to my bedroom sensor as bedtime approaches. The Nest thermostat does update the mobile app within seconds where the Ecobee only seems to update approximately every 3 minutes. With Nest, I can hear the system activate and within seconds the mobile app indicates it. With Ecobee, I can hear the system activate and it may take up to approximately 3 minutes for the mobile app to reflect it is running. I believe that is due to the Ecobee thermostat updating the servers on a scheduled basis versus every time an event happens at the thermostat.

Working in the hvac industry Ecobee was way better due to the analytics it provides. Also nest has a habit of failing prematurely. Also nest has geofencing which can turn it on when your getting close to home.

I'm not much of a fan that the Nest doesn't allow you to make adjustments to how the staging works because the nest has no clue about the building or how it should be staged

almost always of the nest failing prematurely or causing issues is because they aren't using a C wire. Some systems aren't providing it enough power from the rh or rc, No matter if the nest compatiblilty test says just get attach a C wire. If you don't have on and having an electrician install one is not in the cards you can connect a c wire adapter that will plug into any outlet. or use the Nest C wire adapter that can be connected at your furnaces wire board. I think HVAC people still crapping on nest and don't now about using the C wire doesn't install a lot of trust in them it's either they don't have the knowledge of it or they have an agenda when they have a partnership with a competitior thermostat company. Either way it's not good.

nest also has a cool feature to keep things in eco mode when your home. If you turn on eco mode manually it will keep it in eco mode even if it detects your home, which saves you money.

I've had both. A prefer the hardware and interface on the Nest and user interface is way easier as well. Don't really care about the extra functionality of the Ecobee if it's a pain in the a$$ to set up. Either of them work with a stand alone Alexa (not built in) OK enough - as long as the thermostat is in either heat or cool mode. If they are in auto mode, Alexa commands to change the temp don't work.

Definitely would go with nest, I have had both. My issue was that I didn't have a c wire so the ecobee gave me a piggyback cable which was great. As far as use and ease of operation the nest is much better. The nest is much more functional and ecobee is annoying to make quick adjustments and there is some kind of small matted area that looks like a peel off. I went to peel it off but ended up scratching it. I don't know if this square is for Alexa or temp sensor. I don't really know if the ecobee remote sensor actually works. I have a 1 zone system with vast difference in zones so I don't know. Ecobee is very confusing.

Interesting review... but one of the coolest features of ecobee is the ability to geo-fence. So when you are out of a range, the system can go to a specific (energy saving) temp. When you are on your way back, then the unit will adjust the temp to your desired temp. Very cool ability.

The Ecobee is advertised as now having the "learning" feature that Nest has. Kind of like how the Ecobee started with the room sensor first and Nest later added that, it sounds like the Ecobee added learning through software updates - at least, it is currently advertised to learn your patterns automatically. Is that not the case?

Thanks for the comparison! My wife and I currently have the Ecobee 2 (which doesn't have Alexa). Been considering possibly switching to Nest. I do like that the Nest learns your schedule similar to Google Maps, which I use a lot. I've bought a bunch of room sensors for the Ecobee though, so I may just stick with it.

Hmm. Ecobee is much better with their eco + software. You can maximize the savings and it will increase the temps to save you money. I love nest because it’s so much easier. No schedule to create of when I’m home, away, sleeping. I just set what I want and it’s done. Also, if I know my rates are high between 4-9 pm I can manually adjust the nest to increase the temps so the ac won’t turn on. It’s just easier to use then ecobee

@@brianswails7276 As a homeowner I've found that there are numerous other factors that can contribute to a high electricity bill besides just your thermostat. For instance how well insulated/ ventilated your attic/ walls/ crawlspace is, if you have energy efficient windows, etc. Often there are local contractors that can do free/ low-cost energy audits. Typically any energy-efficiency upgrades you make to your home qualify for a tax credit the following year. We own an old home, so discovered a lot of this the hard way.
