This series is one of my favourites. That last sentence, with the music, sent a chill down my spine and brought the tears to my eyes. It's worth noting about the case that after Whiteway's execution, a series of attacks on women that had been going on for some time suddenly ceased. So it's very likely that the police did convict the right man.
I have read a lot about this case. Even though I believe Whiteway was guilty, both the confession and the miraculous recovery of the so-called murder weapon when police need to find it but couldn't scream of fabricated evidence. The police staged all of their case against him because of gut feelings of his guilt they could not prove.
I know… at the end there was def a strong implication that the confession likely was coerced, or at least obtained in a less straightforward way than the cops presented. I think the guy did it but that doesn’t negate the fact that the case was totally mishandled. The axe’s chain of custody was a joke and the head detective believed that the ends always justify the means, calling *everything* he did into question. I dunno.
