- This week I sit down with Hrafna from Iceland, who runs a RUclips channel on Icelandic culture. She and I have filmed a video on dating an Icelandic woman a few years back and it was nice to get back to talking about the intricacies of Icelandic culture - one that not many people know well. What is living like in Iceland? And what is it like dating in such a tiny populated country?

Exactly! I can't understand people who want to live in a hot climate. Temperatures of +30° is a nightmare for me.
@decollector95 well, in a dry climate 30° turned out to be ok. Even feels like a fresh wind blowing through the windows in the evening.

I expect from everyone with a bit of historical and cultural knowledge that it is immediately recognized that names like JohnSON, Mendelsohn, JefferSON, EricSON/erikson, HarriSON, AnderSON, PeterSON, GustavSON, GarriSON etc. are not just typical for Iceland but this 'SON of ' was a thing in big parts of Europe (also exist in other cultural spheres). Even without any knowledge when she brought up the example of 'John' and 'Son' everyone with a bit of pattern recognition should have had recognized that! You have also in Spanish often much longer name chains related to relatives and btw, that first and family/surname schema also evolved over time by adding to ONE name a kind of nickname association like Henry (comes from Heinrich/Hendrick) from the Mill - Henry Miller ... Adam Smith ... Taylor ... Baker ... ChurcHILL... Eisenhower (Iron Worker) ...
I was binging on your channel, I have seen the Swedish episode with Varpoo as I’ve seen her channel. She’s a burst of sunshine. But I’m watching the Iceland one. When it came to intimacy I remember when I was at university one of my biggest fears was navigating my reserved value to sex vs someone from a different country and their views. I can tell you for a fact I would not go on dates because the fear superseded my ability to feel comfortable to say no. Listening to the Finnish lady you are talking to makes me feel like yah just be you. If you don’t want to but want to get to know him a bit more then it’s ok. Of course 28 yrs later I’m happily married to my German husband who was the most patient person I could imagine. He wanted me and all that can wait it will come in time. We spent lots of time together and getting to know him, his intentions and his ways really helped relax me a lot. I’m Indian and while my up bringing woukd say no sex before marriage that was not going to be my way. So that was not that I was saving my self it’s just I needed to know this guy before my heart was consumed.
I've been to Iceland four times over the years, another planned in July 2024. I've never dated an Icelandic woman purely because every visit I have made my wife of 50 years was along for the trip. I remember the original video regarding the meeting in the street, we are now Kviðsystir, Eskimo/Stomach sisters. To be honest chance would have been a fine thing at my age anyway. I'm sure they are not desperate enough to want to date an old guy like me. Having said that enjoyed all my (our) trips there and find the Icelandic people friendly. Cheers from the UK.

Regarding the trend-following and group-compliance thing: I remember visiting Norway and all young people were wearing this one hat. Sheep was the word that came to mind. Regarding relatedness: 3rd cousins share less than 1% of DNA, so it's really a non-issue.
I don't think you understand if you're immediate thought is that the people are sheep.
Icelandic people are nice and giving. US and Canadian people could learn some lessons. And why would the interviewer suggest Latin men would try to get a woman drunk?
Iceland inhabitants climbing over 400,000 by year-end. In 1968 it was only half of that😉

I remember visiting Iceland in 2022 and the video you and Hrafna made about dating in Iceland connected me to Hrafna’s RUclips channel and from there I just basically fell in love with Iceland as a country. I should thank you and Hrafna for sharing great information in such an authentic and fun way that it captivated me, and I’m sure many others! Icelandic people are on a different level and their lifestyle is most interesting.

The law in iceland is that one spouse is not a descendant of the other and that the spouse may not be a sibling.
Icelandic people are nearly all 6th cousin or smaller. But from 2nd cousin on its really not a genetic issues.
What they say it’s not true be careful! The worst vacation I had in my life it’s not welcoming place and the people they are not friendly
