  • This week I talk to Alan, who is from Sao Paolo, Brazil and has moved to Canada over 10 years ago. We talk about the differences in culture, why it can be hard as a Brazilian to live and date in Canada, why dates in Brazil are seen differently and what happens when you get into a relationship with a Brazilian.

Each week I will interview guests from all around the world on the topics of culture, connection and of course, dating. The goal is to go as deep as possible and to really understand where we all come from and how much culture influences our life.

Funnily enough I have the exact same experience w Americans even tho I’m from Lithuania, a country often called the most introverted country on earth; not at all the same as I experienced when I did a student exchange in São Paulo Brazil! Even tho Lithuanians aren’t friendly or polite, they’re not fake; and u will know for sure when you’re connecting w someone and it’s not a guessing game as I felt most my interactions w Americans were too distant/yet weirdly too friendly for my comfort. I felt relieved whenever one of the locals was rude or blunt w me at least then I knew where I stood. Sorry but I tried really fkin hard for a year to make friends but then it got so demoralising that I got super depressed. Never felt like I could befriend American born ppl, even tho I went to high school in la, all my friends were Latinos. I could never get used to the politeness cuz for eastern Europeans it’s not a good thing to be so falsely nice, and I’m just not able to discern when I’m close to someone or just a wall to talk at 😢
Edit- this is probably specific the most to California, as I have family in the Midwest and even though they’re also the politest ppl ever, it feels like they’re more genuine and they’re soo sweet it’s touching cuz Lithuanians don’t do that unless drunk and it’s messy

Hey, I wouldn't say that Lithuanians are not friendly or polite. But definitely more straightforward and honest. Yeah, not likely to fake as much.

I confirm, Americans are very superficial and pretty much impossible to become friends with. They're talkative but the things they chitchat about aren't substantial in any way, so you leave a conversation with an them feeling empty, it's as if you waisted your time, and relationships seem to not move forward, in a regular setting (outside the US) the more time you spend with a person, the more you meet the deeper your relationship gets, that is not true for Americans. I live in Colorado, and I find everything you said pretty accurate for the location I'm in .

Turkish here, living in Southern California for a long f’king time. My exact thoughts regarding superficiality of Americans. When I first came, when people felt super friendly like hiya doins and good mornings, I’d redeem and reply with same friendliness. Then they’d be looking at me like I’m a complete weirdo. Fast forward to now, when an American goes hiya doing or yells at my face from 6 ft away, I ignore it or say no hablas espanol. Easier that way.

I actually gave a thought to why Americans act like that. I think, it’s a habit from Wild West times. When someone is approaching from across, they smile and say how are you doing, which means “I am friendly, don’t shoot me”. Once both parties figure that they are safe, they continue with their usual way.

As a Brazilian woman, I know that Brazilian people are really passionate and emotional when it comes to relationahip, but the problem is... if your Brazilian guy says he loves you, he will probable loves other girls too at same time (too much love and kisses to give) rs
Overall, Brazilian guys are afraid about marriage and commitment. For most of them, quantity is better than quality.
Easy to get them, hard to keep them...

16:20 ten o’clock is pretty late to be out for people who have to leave the house at 7 or 8 the next morning for work…perhaps Canadians prioritize their sleep over late night hangouts? I’m the same…

For a young? I'm not sure. I'm 46, ten o'clock is pretty ok for me, and I wake at 5 in the morning.

27:37 - such a green flag thing to do. taking the relationship at the woman's pace is so, sooooo respectful.
29:02 - i love this about latin people and Armenians lol. we're the same in being available to the people we love. I hate the thing about availability being unattractive in the USA. the games are horrible lol I just don't engage.
    31:35 - lovebombing. 😭

Alan, I'm also Brazilian, from São Paulo and single, but 38. I'm being transferred to Ireland (Cork) due to my job. I wonder how Irish women will see me now. LoL

Being rushed out of restaurants was already a thing in Albertan restaurants long before Covid.

You should have moved to London. It's cheaper and safer than Toronto. Really big cities are never good. Even celebrities like coming here since they are left alone to enjoy themselves. When the London Airshow is on, the American pilots almost fight over who gets to bring their plane, as they have such a good time. I can get a pizza anytime of day without worrying about bad encounters. Of course, things are starting to change here as well, as they are everywhere. I can't comment on the dating scene, though, as I have been married for the last 37 years. As far as Toronto goes, I don't even like visiting it. It's much more relaxed in London.

I heard downtown London is full of homeless people and not a safe place to be in. My brother-in-law lives in London and he says it’s really bad.

    • @johnnygood4831
      @johnnygood4831 2 месяца назад

I've lived here for over 30 years and don't go downtown. There's nothing there that I can't get in the outlying areas, and no parking problems. Except for the festivals, there's really nothing downtown. Of course, the homeless problem has gotten worse since that brain dead Ford messed up the rent control, which he did because he owns rental properties and wants as much money as he can get. The piss off is that Trudeau got blamed. Too bad somebody wouldn't try and take Ford out.
