I always appreciate when people discuss lighting. A lot of my work is in wedding films, and I often see colleagues who either put lights on camera, or don't pay much attention to matching lighting with the existing lighting in a space. It really makes a big difference.

What would interest me about your course is info about pre and post workflow. Like you mentioned in a previous video you worked on a project with 300 hours of footage. How do you manage and organize it with all the audio files on top of the videos? There’s lots of cinematography courses but barely anything on pre and post workflow.
I barely use lights in my documentaries and this has been really helpful. Maybe you can show a bts vid on how you setup these lights, mostly on how long it takes and the crew involved, because the reason I rarely use lights is just it takes too much time in a run and gun shoot. @@LucForsyth as someone who also grew up skateboarding and listening to punk, I completely get it.
I'm new to the game but one trick I've found is a small LED light hung up somewhere behind the camera to be a catch light for eyes when they look too dark. The one I use is adjustable in brightness .
Cheap as chips way to fix a bad situation.. (turn it up to bright and you catch teeth shine... Not so cool... Lesson learned) I've signed up.
Most practical knowledge on doco making I've some across.. There is simply not enough out there for doco makers.. We usually have low budgets and small crews.. Plus the need to make it look natural.. challenges narrative guys with huge budgets and a crew of hundreds couldn't imagine!

Thanks Luke. Great demonstration! Motivated light is very important. The other trick I have learned is bouncing light for docs. Especially in an office or even home environment. And even better, in a small room. I find I can get that “lit” look to diminish by not pointing a light fixture directly at someone’s face. It can make it feel more natural and less produced.

Hi Luc, I subscribed a few months ago and have grown to respect, like and maybe even 'love' your channel. I can see the evident common sense and experience that you bring to the topics you talk about.
I'm an experienced amateur photographer now attempting to teach myself more about the craft of video (dare I say cinematography).
It's here and maybe three or four other 'specialist' YT channels that I have learnt more about some of the subtler things that on the surface don't always seem very important. Yet on reflection they are valuable tips and insights that help me grow.
Here the concept of 'motivated ' lighting, not something that immediately sprang to mind. Yet it's evident and obvious when one deconstructs and reflects on what you see, hear and come to later really appreciate.
Take that background desk lamp that you show in the background. It's low power and impossible to light you in the slightly dark 'edgy' style you portray here. It 's an example of motivated lighting, although you don't verbalise that. If I hide that lamp, masked with my hand, then you instantly move into the territory of looking dark and drastically underexposed. That's the power of 'motivated' anything - the power to trick one's brain and suspend disbelief.
There is an obvious parallel in sound too. I remember well your episode talking about showing a few frames of 'traffic' or maybe a 'jack hammer's on a building site to accompany what in the absence of that 'motivated' source would simply sound like bad audio.
I suspect it works in other dimensions too. Perhaps showing a hot 'sweaty' subject to emphasize a tale of physical stress etc etc. In short any clue(s) that help "sell" the illusion and help viewers suspend disbelief.
So thanks for all I have learnt so far. Having just ordered a FX3 I'm looking forward to getting out more and practicing some of the basic elements of film craft and building my editing skills in Da Vinci. Paradoxically the more I learn the more I realise I don't fully understand. So much to learn and so little time. But I'm determined to grow my skill set and do quality personal projects.

Always interested to hear how other people shoot verité scenes, how to get the necessary coverage without loosing important moments, shooting with the edit in mind, when to shoot reaction shots and when to stay on the subject talking and so on, all while making it look as interesting as possible.

There are a ton of lighting breakdown videos on youtube but they are mostly on commercials and big budget movies. At least for me, I've never seen one that is on documentary. It is just a totally different game because in docs you have to work with almost nothing. Learned a ton from this video and see you in the documentary cinematography course!

Hey Luc, I love your content! I've been wanting to use this same "draw on the screen" technique in my own videos. I haven't figured out a way other than drawing on my iPad while screen recording, then dumping it into the timeline above the clip I want to use it on. It look like you're drawing in real time with the video. Is that true? If so, are you able to share your process?? Thanks man!

Quick comment: I have no idea if you have these points included on your workshop coming up... but things like audio: setting up certain devices, (I know they are not all the same... but at least the ones indie filmmaker/documentarist use: yup the "Zoom recorders"" 😂 H6/H8... F3 of F8. Or how to set up the new Lavs in the market. Also a topic many workshops never touch is how to use & set up; time code & Gen Lock when using 2 or more cameras: interviews etc. Most courses mentioned what are they for, but they never show: "how to" All of us can read on google what are these things for... but the important thing is to see how to use them in real situations while shooting. Sorry I got carried away but I am really excited about this new project of yours! cheers mate!

Nanlite makes some super small and easy to use protectors. Do you ever use light projectors in Docs to simulate light spill through windows for instance? Thanks!
Yeah, heard great things about those tubes - might have to get my hands on some. I've used projectors a couple times, but usually for special shots like driving scenes, not so much for spill. Would definitely work though. I typically just use hard spot lights or panels for that, but if you've had success with projectors I'd love to hear about it.
Have you seen the new Zhiyun 60W + 100W pocket COB lights? Those could be handy for your work!

Great video. I'd honestly be curious to see how your approach to lens selection can affect your lighting choices/if it does. One thing I've noticed is that when it comes to lighting I have a very different approach compared to some of the older cinematographers I work with, and I think it comes from the majority of my career being in a post DSLR world. Faced with a terrible lighting environment I'm far more likely to shift to a faster lens and use subtle washes of light to fill/bring up areas of a shot, where as they'll tend to just bring up the ambient lighting to look good at F4.0. And I realize that's largely because they've spent 40 years shooting without a 1.2 prime lens in their back pocket. I imagine based on this video and the gear you use that you're likely somewhere in the middle of the two approaches.
Thanks man. Honestly it doesn't really. I don't light for shots so much as light a space and then just shoot within it. I don' generally have time to change lighting between takes, and for most of my shoots there are no "takes" at all, so for me I just take an hour or so to light the whole scene and then shoot coverage as per normal. Hope that helps!

Hi! I think in minute 8:26 in Narcos frame by the way and angle she is sitting facing the guy diagonally tours the camera while he is sitting straight, you can tell she is closer to the bare bulb, maybe there’s no any other source of light. Bests regards from a Venezuelan follower!

Curious how these types of lights are rigged? I can't imagine you're bringing a truck into the middle of narco territory in Mexico... How do you get the lights so high without big baby-booms or similar large lighting rigs?
Thanks David. I use pretty minimal rigging, often just really sturdy light stands like Matthews reverse stands. If I have a big enough vehicle or if it's a big production with a van/truck and a budget, we'll use c-stands. On really big shoots, usually ones that involve famous people, we'll hire a G&E truck for the days we need, but that's not so typical. the nice thing about filmmaking in 2023 is that lights are small and anything up to a 300d can fit on one of those reverse stands for when space or weight is an issue.
Love your channel. Great video, but the real question is: What bands? Pennywise, Guttermouth, Descendants, Rancid, Lagwagon, Op Ivy.......?
Ha! All of the above plus a little Strung Out, NOFX, Flatliners, and a ton of other nostalgic ones! Got a 1500 song playlist of that stuff and still listen to it when I want to get pumped. No one else likes it though...

I think working for free is a great idea, and I've done it a lot - still do. Others disagree, but with no experience I think it's a good way to get your foot in the door and learn at the same time. Good luck!
