- The most complete and best-preserved Stegosaurus specimen of its size ever discovered is coming to auction at Sotheby’s New York.
Distinguished by its remarkable size, “Apex” is an outstanding exhibition-ready mounted skeleton, measuring approximately 11 feet tall and 27 feet long.
Discovered in May 2022 on privately owned land in Moffat County, Colorado, near the aptly-named town of Dinosaur, the fossil-named “Apex”-was meticulously excavated by commercial paleontologist Jason Cooper, who embraced a philosophy of “minimal intervention.” Cooper and his team expertly highlighted Apex’s awe-inspiring natural beauty while preserving critical contextual details, including fossilized skin impressions and cervical ossicles.
Join Sotheby’s Cassandra Hatton, Global Head of Science and Popular Culture, as she travels across the U.S. to meet with Cooper to ensure that the documentation and sale of this extraordinary specimen are managed with the utmost care and transparency-from excavation to auction.

Sotheby's is an auction house so they sell the items and then the buyers can do whatever they want with the piece
This is so crazy! Also, imagine your best friend asking you what you want to do for your birthday and you go "I want to find a dinosaur!"
Awesome find. I think that the commercial route is good because the discoverer said it took about 1.5 years, several people, and a lot of expensive equipement. You need resources to pull off such a feat. Whatever their cut of the $40M is, it will allow them to hopefully find the ancient treasure. At least it is a far better story than the backstabbing greed that happened with "Sue" here in Chicago. Hopefully Apex ended up somewhere where people can enjoy and learn from it and not some palace's foyer.

Hey that's my cousin!! What a small world. Congrats Jason, glad to see you were able to follow in Uncle's footsteps & find such a fascinating / fulfilling hobby. I remember uncle (I don't want to say his name for privacy lol) showing me his trilobites & whatnot back in the day. As I recall it was one of the best preserved ones ever found? Either way it's so great to see someone having such a positive impact. To think, people will be ooh'ing & aw'ing over those fossils CENTURIES from now is.. Wild

@@berk4282There is no life without limitations, nature itself works like that. Not everything should be for sale. To sell something you must own it first. This dinosaur is not theirs.
Could still be purchased and donated to a museum. Happens frequently, but I agree.
They need to be able to sell it to incentivise them to dig it up and do the 18 months worth of work to save it. Otherwise it would be lost in the ground forever
If it wasn't stolen off private or government land, was made a legitimate deal to acquire for a certain fee once it had been uncovered from private land or was uncovered from public land, then it's Finder's Keepers baby! All is fair game!!

@@leannaerickson9745 my thought is to go go completely minimalist when out in the field to help spot ticks. Maybe a loin cloth and a spear to feel like you are living in the Land of the Lost. Or, go classic Rachel Welch! Assuming they are talking about the extra loose blue/black outfit, I automatically thought of you were going for the Sith Lord look overseeing your minions as your minions bring your undead army to life. If it you were wearing white, I would switch it to a Saruman reference. 😘
