Ren dropped a note on what he meant by "Illest of Our Time" not too long after he released this song. It's worth the read: "Overhwlemed by the amount of support for illest Of Our Time. Have been loving watching all the reaction videos and hearing everyone's interpretation. I never usually break down my own words because I love letting people apply their own meaning, but there was one line I wanted to explain. The title of the song. Alot of people took this to mean "The greatest Of Our Time" "Look for all the answers that I never seem to find, Till then I guess I'm still the illest of our time" Its my reluctance to be the illest - the clue is in the word 'guess' - ive spent the better part of a decade looking for solutions to the damage lyme disease dealt with countless doctors visits, and am still in that boat. "Illest" can also mean "dopest" "best" etc. So it's a bit of a double entendre. Same as "Sick boi" This theme is repeated with the line "elementary dear Watson you might find" cause Sherlock Holmes was always searching for the clues to piece the puzzle together, which is very relatable when trying to piece together parts of a very complex health picture, anyone with a very complex illness will relate to almost having to become your own detective. And finally "A pathologic entity - if eveything is set in stone then this is how its meant to be" Acceptance that this might just be the cards I've been dealt. To search for answers and simultaneously accept that chronic illnest may be your fate is a bit of a paradox because it is the rejection of acceptance that spurs you forward in the persuit of answers, but it is the acceptance that you may always be sick that let's you lead a more peaceful life... so one must walk this contradictory line between both opposing states to have the motivation to find the answers whilst not being so outcome dependent. Still haven't mastered this, but think it's an interesting concept"
Nice! I think you’ll also really enjoy Ren’s band, The Big Push, and their various street performances. They do a rendition of War Pigs by Black Sabbath, plus a variety of other tunes, all very different from one another, but with Ren’s distinctive vocals added to it.
I've watched so many reviews of Ren's songs but yours always bring a new perspective and it's fascinating to hear your thoughts as someone who has so much experience sharing music and building playlists for an audience. Your thoughtful understanding of this track is one of the best analyses I have seen, as you fully appreciate the depth and duality.
I’m impressed by how much you hear and understand. Especially having only listened to three of his rap songs. I can’t wait for you to hear him sing and cut loose.
I hope REN sees this, this is one of the best reactions to this song, I just love how you really see thru to the heart of REN. Can’t wait for you reactions to his earlier catalog, there are many REN gems to find. Also his more rocker vibe with his former band The Big Push original and covers. REN has the X factor. What a breath of fresh air he is and he comes across so humble. Btw he has a song called Humble featuring another artist, Eden Nash, you will love it!!!✌🏼
I grew up with Poc, SPMex, Beastie Boys, NIN, 242, Ministry, Blue Oyster Cult, DePeche Mode, Marley, CCR, Clapton, Clash, SxP...and too many more to name...I hear influences of all these musical memories; yet a unique freshness as well, in Rens music! ❤
This is one heck of a rabbit hole your entering Ren is so talented and versatile, For Rap definately do "The Hunger" and "Losing It" for a Duet go with "Chalk Outlines" with Chinchila, Then His Band "The Big Push" for his singing versatility, Another track that shows a completely left field side of Ren is "Ocean" Ft Eden Nash completely different from anything else, BTW he produces all his tracks himself whether it be the beat, the effects, beat box you name it as 90% of the time it's Ren himself, one extremely talented individual, Then there is "Hi Ren" Oh My you don't know what you have let yourself into lol
Wow, I like your take on these three Ren songs ... I grew up in the 80s&90S and get a few things, but you are so much more knowledgeable and have a cool way to communicate your insights. Plus I absolutely adore your voice :)
I am impressed, he can see details in just these three songs that show how well educated Ren is in music. "incredible message" - Just wait...there is more.
Baby x here. I'm so glad that you can tell all of his influences after only listening to a few of his mostly rap songs. I'm very excited to go down this Ren rabbit hole with you. He's so multitalented, and I haven't been as excited by an artist in so long. I don't have any preferences for which song of his you should react to next, I love them all for different reasons.
Definitely has a bit of The Crystal Method's "Busy Child". He said he was influenced by the Streets of Rave video game music. Reggaeton has just one "R". Good reaction.
Amazing how you can hear so much by only listening to few of his rap tracks. He most certainly has a very wide musical background. I’m really loving your analysis, hope to see more Ren reactions. Maybe some of the street performances with the Big Push
If you are ever inclined to review him and Sam Tompkins singing Blind Eyed (a song Ren wrote) I recommend you watch the one that features the Angry Car Park Attendant. It’s not the polished version on the song. I think they were out singing in the parking garage to perhaps test the acoustics. They get run off but they handled it spectacularly (by they, I mean initially Ren and then Sam thus followed his lead). They never stopped singing and rapping as they were being escorted out by several men! Priceless!
Also, it’s cool that you picked up on the double meaning of “Illest.” It’s also referring to Ren’s battle with years of living with undiagnosed lyme disease and what that ended up doing to his mental health and wellbeing.
Every song listed below is a yes for me lol and I'll add The tales of Jenny and Screech (Full version) He does so many genres and all his collabs are just wonderful as well as The Big Push you just cannot go wrong
That's what happens when The Prodigy has a baby with the Knight Rider theme song 😂😂😂 Im a 1980s baby, and I love his nineties influence he shows in a lot of his songs. Makes me feel like a teen again 🤩
Ren's musicality is so diverse, exploring all forms of all generations is inspiring. The layers of sound he puts in his stories and beats are incredible. Ren will be the driver of a new form of expression.
I'm sure I can guess the one that many want you to get to. Or even the three that go together that many want you to get to. But in the meantime you're doing a great job with the others. Great analysis once again.
Out of all the Reactors on Ren you Sir are by far the best as in you actually break it down and explain to people that maybe dont quite get it, you really convey and articulate concisely much like how i would. Great stuff, looking forward to more of your reaction videos Thank You.
Just a simple but effective acid house beat….. banger Get in that REN rabbit hole, you won’t be disappointed. Most people went in it by hearing “hi REN” first… A unique artist that no one can rival IMO
Ren is utterly astounding. I have to recommend "The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full)" and both parts of "Money Game", "Ocean" and "Humble" both featuring Eden Nash, "Chalk Outlines" and "How to Be Me" with Chinchilla (who you should also check out... "Fingers" (live) and "Little Girl Gone" are amazing), "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" and "Bongo Bong" with the Big Push, "Losing It" and "Hunger" for rapping... this kid is so freaking talented and the rabbit hole is DEEP. I can't wait to see what he comes out with next.
Great reaction and analysis. So many people don’t listen deeply to this track and miss all the double meanings and themes. One of my favourites- but I think my favourite Ren song is whichever I listened to last. 😂
I got vibes of Prodigy and Crystal Method in this one. He mentioned on Twitch that he had been contacted by Prodigy's guitarist for a possible collaboration.
I just noticed that you switch up the albums and cds when it’s a new day of reviews. Nice little pickle. Anyway, many great choices in todays batch, but basically the same can be said for other days !!
Wow - very perceptive analysts. You seem to get Ren on many levels that other reactors don’t always…. Keep up the good work… I’d recommend some other tracks but tbh they are all fire…..
So many good songs to react to. I also like his take on modern day capitalism and on the people that are leading our countries. Of course I am talking about “Money Game” part 1 and part 2. Both parts about a year apart. Keep on making those great reaction videos Mr. Clark. Greeting from your Dutch Concurpa!
Another great reaction!!! Love the way you analyse it!! I think you will like sick boi which i think is deffo one for the car playlist (sort of using your radio analogy). It goes alongside hi ren but its a more standard construction song that would make it more 'accessible' for radio play or on your car playlist i think. The guy has so much variety as you say nothing really fits into a single genre its great to hear
New sub here. Intriguing reaction!❤ He has been sick for most of his life, never finding the answers. Will probably walk that path all his life. He got sick...very sick at 19 and spent years disabled, so he has the wisdom of that journey.
Picking up on threads and influences here, please look at Ren performing covers with the Big Push and Sam Tomkins, covers a wide range. from War Pigs to I shot the Sheriff and Wade in the Water. Loved your reaction
A really interesting reaction! I had to subscribe just to see what happens when you start to discover the other sides if Ren. Check out Humble with Eden Nash or the I Love Music trilogy for the influences you mentioned. But the best reference is Ren with his band The Big Push and their cover I Shot the Sheriff / Road to Zion / Hip Hop. Wow you haven't heard him sing OR play the guitar, yet! You are in fir a ride.
His mother was a music teacher and, I believe, a vocal coach. He has credited her for exposing him to so many types of music because she played records a lot. I would presume that is how he learned to play the piano. He taught himself the guitar and studied RUclips guitar videos.
