This was recorded in 2010 (I think) for his album with Sony which he couldn't complete due to his illness. He was worried in 2015 that he might die before he left any music behind, so he got permission from his producer Eric Appapoulay, to include the Sony tracks on his album Freckled Angels. I absolutely love the artist that we have now, but this gives us a picture of how he would have sounded in 2010/11. (To put this in perspective he may have charted before Ed Sheeran ever did)
So glad you did this one! I believe this is one of the songs he wrote when he was signed with Sony just before he got sick, so that’s where the more mainstream sound comes from.
I absolutely love what you said about forward momentum. When you said that it totally made sense to me. It's definitely a very driving tune. I've been using this song as a drum warmup for the past few weeks and while not difficult to play it is extremely fun & I think that gets overlooked alot in music today. Keep up the good work dude 🤙.
Awesome analysis of this song, I only came across this song a few days ago myself and its the 1st indie/rock song I've heard from him, he really can put his talents into any genre of music successfully. ps - love your voice Eric, you really do have the perfect voice for a rock DJ! x
Ren recorded this back around 2010 when he was signed to make an album for Sony. I've heard it was a Trick The Fox project, but I've never heard Ren say that specifically. It sounds like a radio hit because the concept was very much power pop. He got very sick, and was not able to finish the project. He used the songs recorded back then along with songs he made at home when he felt well enough, and released Freckled Angels in 2016. He wanted to release something in to the world because at that time he didn't think he would live much longer. He's doing much better now, but he was really in a bad place for a long time. On a side note, I don't know if it is on purpose or not, but the low end and high end on the track were very hyped. Not trying to troll you, but on decent speakers it's very boomy with scooped out mids and a lot of treble.
great reaction. I wish it was on the radio! Freckled Angels is a full album; 16 tracks. Some really great songs on it; Run Away, Crutch and Dominoes spring to mind. All 3 have videos of a sort; Crutch has a proper video, Run Away has a studio performance video on the channel from Ren's first band Trick The Fox and Dominoes has a lyric video.
Had a feeling you would love this one! As you say it's perfect for radio, it follows a more standard radio flow but still keeps it's uniqueness in there as well. Is definitely in my top 10 Ren tracks!!! A great reaction as always!!
I'd love to know who his drummer is. My guess is that it's his drummer from his first band,, Trick The Fox. You might like to check them out. Thanks for your reaction. Edit. The drummer of Trick The Fox was Tommy Frampton and the drumming sounds very similar on this track, "Run Away". ruclips.net/video/p8MuNCCzH2o/видео.html
Even though freckled angels as an album has been kinda mismatched together with tracks from different times it actually flows really well and is the closest thing to a complete album that Ren has created.
I'm always happy when you choose a Ren track, and this is a favorite of mine (admittedly there are MANY of them). If you like the island sound, Ocean, featuring Eden Nash, is so unique and such a cool vibe!
The island vibe is mostly the half a million immigrants immigrants from there to here since the from 1948 until the 70s called the Windrush generation (and more since then . Most settled in cities, not just London but any port city that used to take passenger ships. and so their music and vibe was absorbed into the music scale of the clubs and students across the country. We are a small country so that sort of immigration has a much bigger influence. It’s not like in the US where those another half million would hardly be noticed and anyway they’d likely settle in New York or LA and hardly touch the rest of the country for at least another generation.
This one really should have broken through, it's such a 'commercial' track that would easily fit on radio. So many of the Freckled Angels tracks are like that but this one is a great example.
Great reaction. Sadly Ren is not played on the radio and I don't think at this point he wants to be. He has mastered RUclips and is an independent artist (so no record labels) and closing in on a million followers. Another great Ren song is Chalk Outlines (ft. Chinchilla) live version. I think Ren is sort of a wake up call to artists showing them that it is possible to reach an audience and remain independent. On a side note, if you like artists that have mastered being unpredictable as to where their song is going next, I recommend Gacharic Spin (another all female band from Japan). Great musicians with lots of energy with a fun vibe. If you like the current Japanese rock scene then you should give them a listen. I'd recommend the songs" Kachi-kachi Yama" or "Mindset".
We have a "culture" channel in Germany that plays lots of indipendent artists. A couple of weeks ago I was at the gas station and on that channel they've played "the tale of Jenny and Screen" and gave some background info about Ren and the tales. I was so happy :) Of course he isn't played on mainstream radio but at this point it's not necessary thanks to youtube and reactions channels.
Always so glad to see Fire on any channel. It’s such a great song, & might even make some new Ren fans out of those hearing him for the first time. Excellent review! 💜
Great reaction video! Love this song! Ren is an independent artist. Stupidly I don't think radio stations in the UK play unsigned artists on mainstream Radio..... (MAYBE BECAUSE OF BIG CORP RECORD COMPANIES HAVING THE MONOPOLY ON PRIME TIME AIRTIME?)
@@MissMeKateYeah, one of Ren's big obstacles to major radio air time is that he's completely independent so he can & will say whatever he wants so even with his more "pop" songs like Power would need to be censored. But it's also what makes him great because you can tell he's just being himself.
Okay, I love that you did song! I wanted you hear him rock out. So….for my selfish wish, since you are locked into Ren, I’d like to give you something different….”Ocean (featuring Eden Nash) or Humble (featuring Eden Nash)”. In my opinion these songs represent the future of music and the innovation of REN’s ability to slide effortlessly between genre’s of music to create something new from the familiar of old.
Eeh, why would we not know Marko, I absolutely love the man 🔥. It was by your Nightwish reactions that I found you maybe a year ago. I am so happy that you now have found the incomparable Ren, my greatest musical obsession of all times. And I am old enough to have had a few 😆
Great reaction again my man. Have a listen to 'The Big Push - All My Heroes (Official Audio)'. Another track that should be on the radio, (apart from couple of F bombs). Someone in the comments said they might be the love child of The Kooks and early Arctic Monkeys.
This could easily have been on a '90s RHCP album imho. Not surprising, considering Frusciante is Ren's guy when it comes to guitar. Don't get me wrong, I'm buying this year's rap/HipHop project from Ren (only a month til "Sick Boi" release now).... but I'm *SO* looking forward to next year's rock(-ish, probably with reggae/ska flavourings, & Frusciante-esque leads) project!! ;)
Money Game pt 1? Any concurs ? 3 is coming out in Aug so it might be a good one. I don't think its radio at all but you're the radio man. I LOVE YOUR REN(BP) REACTIONS. Really really really appreciate your insight. I love your poket face too. Lol. Also, you have a style to your reactions that is completely different than the others. Not that I dont appreciate what others are doing. I don't mean that at all. Your insights come from a completely different angle. Anyway... Ty for your input. It adds alot to my learning quest. Note to self - must check out mos def. Peace out

Exactly
@@jhoop842 I totally agree. Almost to the point that Ed Sheeran might not have made it (because Ren got there first).
Personally I am so happy that we have Ren now. He is older/wiser and entirely unique
Ah well, he will still be charting when sheeran is long forgotten, so there's that.
its criminal its not on the radio - agreed
I haven't listened to the radio in a decade or more. GenX
Agree 🤣😂
Glad you enjoyed this one! I love this song a lot. Really enjoyed your reaction ❤❤
I hear Red Hot Chilli 🌶!! Great track I concur its criminal he's not on the radio 😢
I heard a bit of Chilli Peppers too.
You've got good hearing
Do you? Im listening to. Yeah!
Never surprised, always impressed. Exactly!
So glad you did this one! I believe this is one of the songs he wrote when he was signed with Sony just before he got sick, so that’s where the more mainstream sound comes from.
Nightwish is amazing! I see the pictures in your background. They’re so great at emotional storytelling , too!

This is the epitome of a summer jam!! Runaway is another gem. When Ren was in Trick The Fox.

Yeah, I commented about his voice. Also definitely radio.
I've been told I also have a face for radio as well!!
Cheers,
Eric
Great reaction! You should check out Ren and The Big Push cover of Paint it Black
I concur!

This whole album is fantastic
This is one of my very favorites by Ren! I love love love this song!
Class- Ren is so versatile , love it. I purchased the complete CD the other day and it is awesome and a few years old.

They played Animal Flow on BBC recently. One of the later night 'one to watch' type shows. It was heavily censored though.
