I’ve always hoped JK would write a story about him. To me he is the most interesting character of the wizarding world. How could you go wrong with releasing a story about the most powerful wizard of all time. Who was apparently a half blood sorted into slytherin house, and taught by the man himself. If that ain’t interesting I don’t know what is.

H.P fans: how could Merlin be a Slytherin? Me, learning about Merlin before I read Harry Potter: well, he did help Arthur to pull the sword out of the stone and become king. It takes a very ambitious wizard to delve into politics, and actually make somebody king or queen of England.

Merlin is according to my favorite theory based on a real historical person, a Welsh bard called Myrddin Wyllt (Myrddin the Wild) who fought in the battle of Arfderydd and after the very bloody defeat and victory of two warlords he considers beyond cruel, fled to the forest and lived in the wild, where he received a gift of prophecy and became known as a seer (a Welsh word for a seer is dryw = druid). Despite living in woods, Merlin lives in certain luxury thanks to his sister Gwendydd, who is the wife of king Rodarcus. Rodarcus tests the accuracy of Merlins prophecies and after he predicts that the same boy dies in three different ways (tripping on rock, trapped by tree, drowning in river), he dismisses Merlin as a mad man, until the child truly trips on a rock, what causes him to fall into a river where he drowns and his body is later found trapped in a fallen tree across the river. After that, Rodarcus begins to respect Merlin and has a huge house with many windows to watch the stars build for him in the middle of forest, ordering 70 scribers to follow Merlin and writing down everything he says. He himself often search advice from Merlin and so do many kings and leaders. Merlin is believed to be closely associated with druidic religion, who through his prophecies and actions often tried to trick, deceive and manipulate the political situation in certain way, and who, to his own sadness, predicted the defeat of Britons by Saxons (the prophecy about two dragons -the white one representing Saxons taking over the red one representing Wales).
I knew that Merlin was in the Harry Potter folklore, but for me, I know and am more familiar with his version portrayed by the TV-series produced by BBC. Granted, it has its problems but in my opinion, it's one of the better versions, as far as I can tell. There, Merlin had a normal human mother but his father was a Dragonlord (they had the ability to commune with the Dragons). Merlin had also another name, more ancient, prophesied by the witches and wizards of old. He becomes a servant in the court of Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father but has to hide his magical abilities, since the witch-hunt, if you will, is full on. Much more happens as well in the series, and although I'm not entirely happy with some changes and alterations, it did a good job! I kinda recommend it, it's all good and fun.

In my opinion Merlin should have never been made to attend Hogwarts. It doesn't make any sense. He's seen as this near mythical figure. He should have predated the school, and the four founders, by centuries.
In Jack Whyte's 'The Arthurian Tales' his take on Merlin explores his entire life from beginning to end and how instrumental he was in the rise of Camelot and rearing of Arthur. Fantastic series. Basically the reason that Merlin gained his reputation as a wizard was because he was SOO much smarter than everyone else at that time, so it was the only explanation the average person had.
I was always fascinated by the oldest story, of Myrddin, before Geoffrey of Monmouth fused him with Aurelius. It's actually believable! He was a soldier who lost his mind in the midst of battle and fled into the woods, not talking for years, living as a hermit. He eventually became completely attuned to the forest, and when he finally started talking to people it was with great wisdom and compassion from his years of suffering and wrestling with what we'd now call PTSD to work his way through to the other side. That he was also alleged to have uncanny powers fits with the kind of shamanic journey that he underwent.

My favorite version of Merlin is from Mary Stewart’s “The Crystal Cave”, “The Hollow Hills”, and “The last Enchantment”. She researched the subject of a decade, then told Merlin’s Story, from his own perspective. It’s the best First Person Perspective I’ve ever read, and EASILY the best Arthurian story in existence,
To hell with these awful Fantastic Beast movies, what the Harry Potter Universe needs is a high budget series with competent writers (that are actual fans of the Universe) that tell us stories like these. Imagine the following stories as a Netflix show: - Proper retelling of the Harry Potter saga that’s fully faithful to the books. - The story of Dumbledore and his battle against Grindelwald (not drawn out with useless subplots like in Fantastic Beasts). - The creation of Hogwarts and the houses with Godric, Rowena, Helga and Salazar. - The story of the Marauders. - Voldemorts youth and rise to power. - The creation of Ilvemorny with Ysolt. - The story of Raczidian. - The story of Ekrizdis. And those are just some on the top of my head. I mean these people are sitting on a gold mine yet don’t seem to understand the potential this universe had to offer to its fans.

You've got one thing wrong... Arthurian Legend is set in the 5th and 6th century. It was written in the 12th century. That contradicts Merlins school years at Hogwarts after its foundation.
Yeah, what I was thinking too and I'm an American who loves the Arthurian Legend and have read everything I've been able to get my hands on. Myrrdiin was born a lot earlier than Hogwarts 990AD, so he couldn't have been in Slytherin.
There's actually alot of halfbloods in Slytherin. There are barely any pure blooded wizards left. Mind you, Voldemort himself was a mudblood, same for Snape.
"So why in the name of Merlin's saggy left--" "What in the name of Merlin's most baggy Y-fronts was that about?" Can we just take a minute to appreciate Ron's beautifully flowery Merlin-related vocabulary?
*No young man, no matter how great, can know his destiny. He cannot glimpse his part in the great story that is about to unfold. Like everyone he must live and learn. I know I'm late to this, but I don't really like Merlin in Harry Potter world. It ruins the actual aspect of where Merlin is from and how people believed he once even lived in our own world around 800 years ago. Obviously we don't believe that today. But the story is still great.
I think Merlins birth stays faithful to the legends. The muggles with their prejudice portrayed the wizard who fathered Merlin as a devil. Making Merlin a muddblood which is why he cared for muggles because his mother was one

More or Less unrelated but I was writing a Croosover Fanfic Between Harry Potter and Fate were Merlin is a Vital Character to the plot, he has yeat to appear but he is not only Crucial in Voldemort's History but also for Harry and he mets him. There will also appear other magical mythological figures but Merlin is one of the Most important to the plot.
I imagine that Merlin was a full-blood, half-blood at the very least. If he had been a muggle, he would never have been accepted into Slytherin, especially while Salazar Slytherin was still alive.
For those who are interested and have the opportunity, I suggest you to go to the Brocéliande forest in Brittany, there lies Merlin's grave. The legend says that Merlin's wife Vivian (not sure of her name in English) asked him to teach her his powers. He did it and told her of a spell that could trap someone into a jail made out of her. Vivian, deeply in love with Merlin, and so jealous that she was afraid that he would go out with another woman, waited till he fell asleep and trapped Merlin into that air jail. Legend says that we can sometimes hear Merlin yell that someone lets him out.
@@Wibtlol it makes total sense: He founded The Order of Merlin, a revolutionary concept which was way ahead of its time both morally and operationally (predecessor to wizard council and later Ministry of Magic) - Determination and ambition (Slytherin traits) Advisor to King Arthur, ruler of Great Britain, with a seat in his court - ambition and cunning to go into politics (slytherin trait) Likewise friends with the Knights of the roundtable ^^^ given the witch hunts and persecution of magic folk by muggles at that time , having famous aristocratic and powerful friends reduced his chances of being attacked and have him perks of power and prestige - self preservation (slytherin trait) ^ he’s similar to Slughorn in many regards as to how the Slytherin traits come out of him.
Merlin & Arthur remind me heavily of Dumbledore & Harry. Same dynamic of teaching, same parental figure, same guidance, same love. It’s coincidental but I like it 🤩
YALL totally should watch BBC merlin It's just so much fun, thrilling, loving, sad It has it all I would totally recommend it It has the most cutest ship ever (merthur)
Merlin couldn't have been a muggle-born because he was sorted into Slytherin, I believe that he was a half-blood as his father is called a "demon or incubus" and we know that the muggles of that time viewed witches and wizards as something demonic, and his mother is the daughter of the king of Northumberland, someone of that high status are closely observed hence if she would have been a witch then the people would have known, but even if we assume that the commoners didn't notice, the king and the queen must have and I think they would disown or kill her while still a child as they would have realized that the people will notice her abilities someday and that could cause a rebellion. Hence, most probably his father was a wizard and mother a muggle...
@@CorraThaxton that is possible, but I still think Slytherin wouldn't do that as a great wizard like him would most probably see the upcoming possibilities that there would be many brilliant muggle-born students in the future, but he still persisted on allowing only half-bloods and pure-bloods in his house, that implies that he wouldn't make an exception for anybody. we can only assume though.... and your idea is possible, I just went with the most probable situation.
@@direwolf3192 but Merlin was a half blood so he could have made a slight compromise considering he would have been able to sense the ability of the most powerful wizard of all time
You said in the start that Dumbledore used it to express surprise. I don't recall to have heard it from Dumbledore, but I have a few other scenes in mind where other wizards have used the phrase, in surprise. Wizards in mind are Slughorn, Arthur Weasely, and Amus Diggory. Slughorn uses the phrase frequently through the story of the Half Blood Prince. From where Dumbledore and Harry meets Slughorn the first time, through the film, also in flashback later, where we see how Slughorn had a conversation with Tom Riddle in the past. In The order of the Phoenix, we hear Arthur Weasly say: "Merlin's beard", as Kingo just sneaks into the elevator in the Ministery, telling that the time of Harry's hearing have just been changed, (hindering Harry and Dumbledore in particular, I'm sure, to attend to it in the first place) And in The Goblet of fire, we hear Amos Diggory express "Merlin's beard" when he meets Harry Potter the first time. Those three scenes from throughout the franchise, are the ones I can come to think of, on my sitting rear end.
Hes powerful for his age. When we see him right at the end of book 7 (when hes in his 40s and head of the auror office) hes likley a very powerful wizard.
Would be cool to have a movie of merlins time threw Hogwarts, showing his story as a young wizard in the Harry Potter universe while also showing the school in its earliest years.
But they do seem to have knights/knighthoods in the magical realm too. Sir Nicholas (Nearly Headless Nick), and other titles like The Bloody Baron (a Lord of some kind?). How does that work? Were they just aristocratic Muggleborn wizards that kept their titles when they went to Hogwarts? They also have suits of armour around the place, which knights would have historically worn. Are these just Muggle artifacts, kept for some reason of use, like the Hogwarts Express?
It's interesting that Merlin was such a strong believer that the muggle and wizarding worlds should co-exist yet he was actually in Slytherin at his time at Hogwarts :0
If you like Merlin, an excellent Mystery series has him as a detective, but he is not a wizard but a scholar. I personally really like this version of Merlin, the first book is called "The Excalibur murders" by Blair, if you're interested.
Ok guys y'all need to watch Merlin BBC on Netflix.... its my favorite show and it had my favorite ship in is (Merthur) it takes a few episode to get into it but its reallyyyy good but the last 2 episodes broke my soul....
Fan theory : His mother was a muggle, his father was a Dragonlord and he was "cursed" or "infused" with the essence of a demon during the pregnancy. He has wizard magic cuz he's Muggleborn. And all that is why he's so op.
It's very interesting that Merlin was in slithering considering that most people say there's not a witch or wizard that went bad that wasn't in Slytherin when Merlin is like pretty good dude it seems
I'm going to preface this by saying it's been a while since I read the books, but I'm pretty sure Ron's the only one who said that, and he was 11 at the time. Going off the lore, every house in Hogwarts has produced dark wizards (Hufflepuff having the fewest). Also, there's still a difference between the statements "every dark wizard was in Slytherin" and "every Slytherin becomes a dark wizard". It the same difference as the statements "Every square is a rectangle" (True: as a rectangle is a geometric shape with four sides all connected at 90 degree angles) and "every rectangle is a square" (False: as to be considered a square, all four sides must be the same length)
I always believed that Merlin was somehow related to Slytherin based upon his real legends. Possibly the child of Slytherin himself but did not agree with his father's ideas and was more drawn to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in how they thought about muggles. He would have used his ambition, resourcefulness, determination, and cleverness to bring the magical world together with the non magical world.
In Welsh, the double D (dd) is pronounced like the English hard 'th', as in the word 'the'. Just thought you'd like to know. Historically speaking, Merlin, like Arthur, probably dates from the 5th century AD, just after the Romans left Britain. If I recall correctly, there are Welsh tales of that period that mention both Merlin and Arthur. Mary Stewart's Merlin series of books, which starts with 'The Crystal Cave', uses what little we know of the historical Merlin as a jumping-off point.
Exactly. The video creator should stick to Harry Potter lore - he mentioned the real life legend of Merlin lived in 11th to 12th century. A few years ago the British History podcast did a great episode on the legend of King Arthur and the "Battle of Badon".
Watching this video was super interesting, even though it conflicts heavily with one of my favorite shows, BCC'S Merlin. I've always thought that Merlin pre-dated Hogwarts and more modern advancements such as the latin spells and defined departments of magical education. It's so interesting how a person can be so disctintly different in each tale about them.
I would have liked the BBC version and HP to be one of the same (in regards to his birth) Although he had a muggle mother, his father was a Dragon Lord. Merlin (AKA Emrys - Druid Name) was born OF magic.....he wasnt born WITH it. This is what made him the most powerful sorcerer ever to walk the Earth. He was born of the power within the Crystal Cave (birthplace of magic) and commanded Dragons as a Lord (by even being able to speak to them in their tongue) I think it would have been cool if this version of Merlin was the one who actually went to Hogwarts and to Slytherin
I actually wish that Merlin was the one that put Harry's name in the Goblet Of Fire due to a vision he had of the consequences if that confrontation did not take place. It also seems weird that Rowling did not leave him in his century. He should be a figure of magic of any witch or wizard of any school in the world.
Gilderoy Lockhart lied about his achievements when he was awarded the Order of Merlin third class. Peter Pettigrew also won due to false claims of bravery.
Thank you for this!! I always wanted to add Merlin into my fanfictions but I think I'll mix up The Adventures of Merlin and the history of Merlin you gave here.
Merlin also shows up in the third book of C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, "That Hideous Strength" in which he had slept under Bragdon Wood since the 5th century, awakening in the late 1940s just after the war when the trilogy takes place.

My favorite version of Merlin is from Mary Stewart’s “The Crystal Cave”, “The Hollow Hills”, and “The last Enchantment”.
She researched the subject of a decade, then told Merlin’s Story, from his own perspective. It’s the best First Person Perspective I’ve ever read, and EASILY the best Arthurian story in existence,
I agree. That series of books is BRILLIANT.

To hell with these awful Fantastic Beast movies, what the Harry Potter Universe needs is a high budget series with competent writers (that are actual fans of the Universe) that tell us stories like these. Imagine the following stories as a Netflix show:
- Proper retelling of the Harry Potter saga that’s fully faithful to the books.
Also the first wizarding war

Arthurian Legend is set in the 5th and 6th century. It was written in the 12th century.
That contradicts Merlins school years at Hogwarts after its foundation.
Yeah, what I was thinking too and I'm an American who loves the Arthurian Legend and have read everything I've been able to get my hands on. Myrrdiin was born a lot earlier than Hogwarts 990AD, so he couldn't have been in Slytherin.

He was in slytherin, so he was pureblood, because Salazar wouldn't let mudbloods into his house.

Most slytherins are half bloods.
There's actually alot of halfbloods in Slytherin. There are barely any pure blooded wizards left. Mind you, Voldemort himself was a mudblood, same for Snape.
His might have been a wizard and his mother was a fairy he told me

I’m pretty sure if Merlin were Muggle-born, he wouldn’t have been in Slytherin.
Merlin doesn't have the weakness of needing a wand. He just needs to be hidden and his eyes will glow. He is also immortal.
BBC Merlin is different from the Merlin in the HP universe. Lol but BBC Merlin would be unstoppable, Voldemort wouldn’t stand a chance 😂

I know I'm late to this, but I don't really like Merlin in Harry Potter world. It ruins the actual aspect of where Merlin is from and how people believed he once even lived in our own world around 800 years ago. Obviously we don't believe that today. But the story is still great.
I like the BBC’s series of Merlin, and I like to link that to the Harry Potter film series
I think Merlins birth stays faithful to the legends. The muggles with their prejudice portrayed the wizard who fathered Merlin as a devil. Making Merlin a muddblood which is why he cared for muggles because his mother was one

Imagine what Harry Potter's reaction would be if he met Merlin?
In what context. If Merlin had suddenly raised from the dead he would likely be in shock.
Merlin never died he just disappeared after Arthur’s death.
Good story idea harry meets merlin
Update the story a bit. Take a page from Star Trek and clone Merlin the same way the Klingons cloned Kahless.
Last time I was this early, grindlewald was still at large
I imagine that Merlin was a full-blood, half-blood at the very least. If he had been a muggle, he would never have been accepted into Slytherin, especially while Salazar Slytherin was still alive.
Merlin was betrayed by his false love and apprentice in the end

I love the story of Merlin in the series of multiple season from 2008 - 2012 entitled "Merlin".
I was expecting Merlin to be a Ravenclaw, due to the fact that he's a very clever wizard.
JK messed up putting him in Slytherin it makes zero sense.
@@Wibtlol it makes total sense:
He founded The Order of Merlin, a revolutionary concept which was way ahead of its time both morally and operationally (predecessor to wizard council and later Ministry of Magic) - Determination and ambition (Slytherin traits)
Advisor to King Arthur, ruler of Great Britain, with a seat in his court - ambition and cunning to go into politics (slytherin trait)
Likewise friends with the Knights of the roundtable
^^^ given the witch hunts and persecution of magic folk by muggles at that time , having famous aristocratic and powerful friends reduced his chances of being attacked and have him perks of power and prestige - self preservation (slytherin trait)
^ he’s similar to Slughorn in many regards as to how the Slytherin traits come out of him.
Cleverness isn’t unique to one house-it exists in all Hogwarts houses

@@Gnossiene369 not really... based on the guidance he gave to Arthur in Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, he is pretty clever.

I always wanted a series about the 4 founders of Hogwarts and with students like Merlin that could actually be a really cool concept
Some legends say his father was Oberon, The King of the Faeries of Avalon.
Yeah, like those legends of his birth the most. It also makes Queen Mab his grandmother.
While Slytherin was prejudiced and preferred pure-blood students, it's likely he could have sensed Merlin's potential and made an exception.
People see Merlin and Arthur just as an Advicer , but they don't know the best friendship of them....
"Merlin's beard Tom...7 Horcruxes"
Harry's broken glasses.
How powerful was Harry Potter? The films made it seem like his power level was mediocre
Mac Welch in the books he was very powerful, in the movies he was mediocre at best
A video about this exists i think
Juan Manuel Cardona even in the books, I personally always felt like Harry was weaker than he should’ve been
Hes powerful for his age. When we see him right at the end of book 7 (when hes in his 40s and head of the auror office) hes likley a very powerful wizard.
no he is just lucky.
Wizards: We are the strongest
Humans: Allow us to introduce the division of the atom
It's interesting that Merlin was such a strong believer that the muggle and wizarding worlds should co-exist yet he was actually in Slytherin at his time at Hogwarts :0
I think merlin was a half-blood and hence his strong feelings when it came to muggless and wizards living side by side.
Fun fact: there is a Netflix show called Merlin
And Only reason to watch that is Morgana Pentdragon.

If you like Merlin, an excellent Mystery series has him as a detective, but he is not a wizard but a scholar. I personally really like this version of Merlin, the first book is called "The Excalibur murders" by Blair, if you're interested.

It’s crazy to think of Merlin as a STUDENT of the Founders-they were truly on another level!!
I would have liked the BBC version and HP to be one of the same (in regards to his birth)
Although he had a muggle mother, his father was a Dragon Lord.
Merlin (AKA Emrys - Druid Name) was born OF magic.....he wasnt born WITH it. This is what made him the most powerful sorcerer ever to walk the Earth.
He was born of the power within the Crystal Cave (birthplace of magic) and commanded Dragons as a Lord (by even being able to speak to them in their tongue)
I think it would have been cool if this version of Merlin was the one who actually went to Hogwarts and to Slytherin
I actually wish that Merlin was the one that put Harry's name in the Goblet Of Fire due to a vision he had of the consequences if that confrontation did not take place.
It also seems weird that Rowling did not leave him in his century. He should be a figure of magic of any witch or wizard of any school in the world.
Dumbledore vs Merlin…who’s winning? 👀
Gilderoy Lockhart lied about his achievements when he was awarded the Order of Merlin third class. Peter Pettigrew also won due to false claims of bravery.
Rando: How strong are you?
