- PGA Professional George Roy shows us how to add weight to sand wedges that's not only functional, but much more aesthetically pleasing than the typical DIY lead job.
Use these same techniques, on any of your clubs, to ensure that your clubs feel and perform exactly how you need them to.

Thanks for watching!!!
Very nice work. Thank you for the tutorial, I couldn't even tell those wedges had lead tape on them until you pointed it out
Great video tip. I have been added lead tape to my wedges for while and never looked this good.
Very nice work. FYI though, a half inch wide lead tape weighs 1 gram per 2 linear inches of tape. Typically, 1 swing weight of change requires 2 grams of lead tape or 4 inches of tape.
Followed your instructions and it looks great. My low bounce 60 felt too light, better feel now
Eric Dye very cool! The only thing better than added performance is having it look good at the same time!
Slick technique! Thanks.
Rolling the edge is called “burnishing”. Thanks for the video!
Nice Buck 103 skinner blade.
Unfortunately it has been far too long since the last time it’s seen any real action. Looking to put one in the freezer in the next few weeks.
Great job, can’t even tell it’s there
Which modifications in your ball flight or spin rate did you try to make with that lead tape position?
Best wishes from Germany
That placement is directly behind the sweet spot at address, so flight characteristics weren’t altered. The primary reason I weight up is because my wedges are 130g c-tapers. I like a heavier feeling head, especially on shorter feel shots. With the way the bounces of wedges are shaped, it’s almost impossible to place tape too low, but if you’re looking to bring spin/launch down, you can place tape higher up on the back of the head. Though those alterations are simply fine adjustments. It would be more beneficial to get fitted for a wedge shaft/loft combinations to really bring your flight characteristics into your preferred optimal zone.
Pro Job!
What brand of tape are you using here?
3M from Golfworks. Unlike the cheap stuff it stays where you put it.
Which brand of tape do you use, i always struggle to find good quality stuff?
Yes! There are a few options out there that have garbage adhesive. Golfworks.com has the good stuff. They’ve got 3M in 1/2” & 1”, and the high density tape is also a good option.
Location of the tape on your wedges will make ball flight higher or lower ?
Slightly higher, but negligible with a wedge.
Hi does removing lead tape damage you clubs ?
Not at all. Aside from leaving some adhesive behind that can be cleaned, removal has zero effect on the club.
this length added how much to your club overall SW
Likely about .25 swing weight change.
What are benefits off adding the lead tape?
scott johnston changes swing weight and cog.
scott johnston it depends on the player and their club set-up. For some, there may not be a benefit at all. I use a slightly heavier (than standard) wedge shaft, so for me, the lead tape gets my swing weights back in order. In general, there are three factors that can be manipulated with lead tape: swing weight, overall weight, and COM.
Im trying to do my 718 AP2’s... nightmare shape
It can be tough to get the tape done right on some of the modern cavity backs... especially if you want a nice clean finish. If you're only looking to modify swing weight, but still want a clean look, you may want to look into lead plug weights. It's certainly more expensive than tape because the shafts have to be removed to accommodate the plugs, but it's definitely the cleanest way to modify swing weights.
What was the swing weight on these 3 wedges?
They weren’t thrown on a scale, but in the past I typically end up around d7-d8. That also takes the midsize grip change into account.
@@royboygolf4297 That is super heavy.
@@jaymorin7131 it definitely is! I’ve always really liked the feel of a very heavy swing weight for intermediate shots though. Edel has incorporated the same type of philosophy in their wedges and they feel great around the greens.
2 inches of tape equals 1 swingweight.
Yeah I believe that’s a correct approximation for 1/2” tape, though factors like length and a shaft type can also come into play. That’s why it’s important to have a scale or see a fitter.
That tiny strip will make no difference to such a heavy wedge what so ever
Well there’s 3 layers double-stacked…. Sooooo
Are you serious? At what level are you when this makes a difference. Only pro’s need this bs. This is what is wrong with golf, con job on the majority. I love playing golf, but I hate the game of golf
You’d be surprised at the difference it makes, especially when it comes to acceleration patterns and distance control. Swing weight/overall weight can drastically change the feel and way a player releases through impact.
