  • I thought that I had missed autumn this year, but I had one last chance to get out before all of the leaves were lost. Today's adventure follows me running around trying to capture some colours on the trees at a local woodland and Wakehurst Place. I also investigate whether Infrared works on autumn leaves?

The gear I use to make my content (although this is always changing!)
Sony A7iv + 20mm 1.8G - My main RUclips camera for shooting out on location.
    Canon EOS R8 + 16mm F2.8 + Zhuyin Crane M3 - I use this for a combination of stills and video B-roll
DJI Pocket 3 - Used for videos where I cover a lot of ground
Sony A7iii - this is my primary stills camera that works with native Sony lenses and all my Canon EF lenses on the Sigma MC-11 adaptor
Canon 5D3 - I use this camera when I use my EF glass and there is no benefit in adapting
DJI Mavic Pro 2 - My first drone, and I can’t see me replacing it. It’s amazing for both stills and video
Go Pro Hero 8 - for adverse weather conditions that my other cameras might not survive!
Insta360 - X3 & One inch edition - for 360 degree video and BTS content
Microphones - DJI Wireless Mic, Rode Wireless Go, Rode Lav Go, Rode Video Pro+, Rode Video Micro
Photo Tripods - Sirui ST-124 with Sirui ballhead, Peak Design travel tripod
Video Tripods - Benro + spikes, Switchpod, K&F travel tripod + Gorillapod
    Monopod - Sirui P-325FL
Camera bags - Manfrotto, Lowepro, Peak Design, K&F and Crumpler
Photo Filters - Nisi V7 + Nisi filters, H&Y magnetic filter system
Video filters - Freewell magnetic NDs, H&Y Revoring, Hoya Variable ND
All of my cameras have Arca Swiss plates to connect with the Peak Design Capture Clip and compatible tripods.
Video editing software - Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro
Video editing on the iPad Pro - LumaFusion
Photo editing - Adobe Lightroom, photoshop, Artisan Pro X, Silver Efex, Color Efex

Lovely fungi shot Ben, they are one of my photo favourite hunting addictions especially at this time of year. Also love the lower branch colour shot 2:36/38. You got some good IR shots despite the dull weather. Thanks for sharing

We were expecting the picturesque red mushrooms with white spots on them, like the front cover of their brochure....but I think we were a bit late for that!

Love the video. Nice idea to keep a notebook on the trees & research them. I find with bird photography that I am gradually learning to recognise bird calls. We learn by observing nature in photography 👏

I find that it sinks in to my long-term memory when I draw them in my sketch book, it makes me think about it a bit more. If you get really good at tree knowledge then you can distinguish a tree from its bark!

The small grouping of horizontal branches works really well, great minimalist take on fall leaves.

Thanks - I struggle with woodland photography, it’s a test in finding a focal point and a clean, balanced composition and hopefully the light works in your favour!

@@benharveyphotography I loved the one at around 2:38. I'm a sucker for bright splashes of color like that. My wife's family had a house up in the mountains of North Carolina. We set our exam schedule so we could get up there for the fall leaves. It was spectacular. Sadly, the house is now gone.

Kool. Love the IR images. The one @ 2:30, I wonder what a 3x1 crop might be like. Maybe the backlit leaves could look like a leaf "cloud" floating through the forest? Cheers!

Cheers Brian, I think that the IR images might have saved me that day, the sun didn't really make an appearance - yet the IR images still came out quite punchy.

Thank you Sarah, I appreciate the kind words. This weeks video was a bit spontaneous, but I think I managed to get some interesting images.

certainly been a good year for autumnal photography Ben but other priorities have kept me out getting out into the woodlands this year. Dont think I have seen autumn done in IR before so it was interesting to see what you captured and really like your final image of the fungi too

Hey Jim, there will be plenty more autumns - don't worry about it. Plus the cold weather has started to kick in now, hoping for some frosty or snowy scenes very soon. Hopefully you find some time to get out with the camera soon. I hope to catch up soon to chat about tilt-shift lenses!
