Kim Tschang-Yeul 김창열: Beyond Iridescence

김창열 화백은 1971년 자신만의 조형 언어로 물방울을 선택한 이후, 물방울(Illusion)과 물방울이 존재하는 표면(Real)의 관계를 통해 예술의 본질을 평생에 걸쳐 재검토해 왔다. 전시 제목 《영롱함을 넘어서》는 처음 물방울을 대면했던 그 순간의 영롱함을 화면에 구현하기 위해 노력해 온 작가의 조형적 의지의 표상이자, 그의 대표작으로 불리는 1970년대 물방울을 또다시 뛰어넘어야 했던 50년간의 미적 여정을 의미한다. 이번 전시에서는 그의 수행에 가까운 물방울을 통한 예술의 본질, 즉 일루전(Illusion)에 대한 도전과 이를 통해 당도하고자 했던 조형적 아름다움을 살펴보고자 한다.

After arriving at water drops as Kim Tschang-Yeul‘s distinctive visual language, Kim has contemplated the essence of art through the relationship between the illusion of water drops and the real surface they rest on. The exhibition title 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘐𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 represents not only his dedication to the formal quest to materialize on canvas the iridescence of his first encounter with water drops, but also the five-decades-long artistic journey to supersede the fame of his own iconic water drop works from the 1970s. This exhibition therefore examines the artist’s challenge on illusion and the essence of art itself through water drops, and the formal beauty sought through it.

물방울같은 우리 인간의 삶. 우주적 관점으로 보면 잠시 맺혔다가 사라지는 존재. 결국 아무의미가 없을 지도. 하지만 의미를 찾기전에 존재가 먼저 있었고 왜 살지? 라고 생각하는 것 역시 살아있기때문에 고민하게되는 것.의미보단 존재가 우선이기에 아무런 의미가 없다는것은 어떠한 의미도 될 수 있는 것 같아요. 너무 경이로운 작업입니다🙏
