As a kid I got to ride in one of the GLHS cars. We got to beat a new 350 IROC light to light twice. This was in Lansdale, PA. The IROC driver turned left before the next light. Poor guy didn't know what he was up against. I've liked these cars ever since. The car in the video is awesome!
Omni GLH turbo was the best handling car of its time, and arguably continues to be today. At the time with a few cheap mods it could out-steer everything on a tight track or in autocross, even Fieros.
Great video Dennis and Roger! About 15 years ago, at the local friday night corner races there was a guy who had one these swapped with the larger 2.4 or w/e block, a neon cylinder head or something, a huge snail and one of those front valence things on it. Pretty much nobody knew what it was and he was just cleaning up, taking on all comers and upsetting everyone with his little monster sleeper hatch.... with the 'piece de resistance' being when he easily licked a boosted Viper. Lmao. The craziest part however is even though the car was front wheel drive the thing pulled so hard and the shifting was so violent that after pretty much every launch and shift into 2and and 3rd the front of the car would be up so high and would come droping down so hard the front valence would smash the ground. It was one hell of a sight and sound hearing that blow off valve punctuated with that crunch-scrape nastiness. It didn't take long for everyone to be afraid and refuse to race any black 4 door hatch that so much as resembled whatever that "GLH" "OMNI" mystery machine was. The next year the same guy showed up but this time he had one of those boxy turbo ~85 Dodge Caravans... he had a 5 speed swap in it and the throw on the giant shifter had to be something like 12-18 inches. I think he even extended it for effect. Lmao. That van was uglier than sin but boy was it fast, faster than the omni somehow...and just watching him He-Man throw those shifts like he was rowing some kind of evil boat was an absolute blast. The thing was much more of a sleeper this time though and he was embarrassing corvettes, boosted v8's and big blocks and AWD DSM's, and WRX's left and right. Like literally everything, and then he just drove away into the sunrise and I believe no one ever saw him again. Having mercilessly beaten whatever this world could throw at him, and with nothing left to do, he ceased his existence on this mortal coil and returned to where he originated: Where else but, Hell. I don't think it was just us quiet, unwashed Canadian's who had witnessed such an unhinged ruination dealt ruthlessly to the unworthy... It was at the very least an OMNious prophecy...foretelling what was to come. And as it was just a short year or two later when Dodge released the first of it's Satan-spawn: The SRT4, followed by many more SRT monsters who were obviously only harbinges for the damned feline "HellCat", the malignant "RedEye" (Lol I think? I'm not a Mopar guy) and finally... the doom-slaying, soul-snatching fiend: The Dodge Demon! Could you imagine in the 90's telling someone buying an anaemic 150HP "muscle car" that in 20 years one of the big three would be selling a normal one of their vehicles with aengine and performance package that puts out over 900hp and allows the car the wheel stand down the track? Unbelievable!
Your absolutely right , 20 years ago I would of said no way to factory cars making anything close to that kinda power. Man that was a great story you told about the turbo dodge sleeper out there taking everyone’s money and riding off into the sun set lol You really painted the picture there !
Lol I'm proud of this car. I loved growing up with them and can't wait to finish my build. I'm going for a modest and inexpensive, yet reliable 400whp. Its funny. This is a 35 year old car with full interior, only ONE CAM and a 5 speed running 9s. Lets not forget he drove to 4 different tracks over 1000 miles PULLING A TRAILER and beating the shit out of the car until this record run. Forget the petty ignorant Honda arguments, this car is impressive. Btw, with the stronger pistons from a later model of 2.5L block, I am running 400hp on stock internals.
+brettyh1 blame honda owners for that. they created the hate. not all but the majority of honda owners are incompetent not the few impressive builders that you are talking about.
brettyh1 You should know that one of my best car buddies is a Honda guy. I am well aware of what Honda's are capable of and in no way do I find them unimpressive. I also didn't say that Honda's wouldn't generate hate for no good reason. I am well aware of that. But mike has a good point. There are plenty of terrible Honda guys resulting in terrible Honda's. Lets also keep in mind bretty, that Honda does not posses a faster car on a single cam. Comparing an 8 valve to a 16 valve is incredibly unfair. SO no, I don't think the "more impressive Honda's" argument is valid here. I am simply saying that this car is great. Period.
On the crank joke when he was going into the car to show it, I really though he had a broken crankshaft in the car like as a memento or reminder not to do something so destructive a second time. My grandmother had a Plymouth Horizon until I was 7, and the memories of that car combined with my love for the old school GTIs gives me a real soft spot for the Omni GLH.
I had this 2.5 turbo in a 90 Plymouth Acclaim and it was actually pretty fun to drive. Torquey little thing though and it chewed up two transmissions. (Under warranty thankfully). I didn't realize you could make this kind of power with the 2.5t, jimminy.
Loved my 85 GLH Turbo until I rolled it upside down. The driver was incorrect about that being a GLHS originally. I am pretty sure none of the GLHS (only 500 made) models had a red interior. They were all like a whitish/gray interior and had the special CS dash plaque with their number out of 500 on the dash.
That was the most bad ass thing I’ve seen in a while! Great hole shot there plus you get extra points in my opinion for working the 5spd. Always got an appreciation for 9 or 10 second car with a stick. But for it being a little Omni and a 4 cyl and fwd dipping into the 9’s that is awesome! Man you could have a lot of fun with one of them on the street! You could send a lot of guy’s home totally defeated , they probably wouldn’t even leave there house for a week , they would be so depressed. Just in the fact they just got wooped by an Omni.
Hey John Fleck ,The 2.5 Common Block That Was Built For The 89-94 Years Were All The Same Crank, Rods, Pistons, Camshaft Etc... It Didn't Matter Weather It Was N/A Or Turbo Models All 2.5 Were The Same ! So Yes He Is Running A Stock 2.5 Turbo Or EFI !!!!In 1989 there was a redesign of the 2.5 to permit both it and the 2.2 to use a common cylinder block. The crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons are completely different in the common-block 2.5 compared to the previous 2.5. This engine competed with Ford Motor Company's HSC engine, which was increased from 2.3 L to 2.5 L for use in the 1986 to 1991 Taurus. The Chrysler 2.5 was retired in 1995.
9.997@143mph. Going 1000+ miles hauling 2 adults, luggage, pulling a trailer and getting 27mpg. While running 10 second passes all week at 4 different tracks.... #winning
+Brad Morris This is why more FWD 4 cylinder cars should show up to these things. I don't care if its a Honda or whatever, the point is we can be competitive in this arena because it doesn't take huge money to run these times. If carefully thought-out it's not super hard to run low numbers and frankly it's easier to drive since if the suspension settings are right the car will always tract straight. 27 MPG is low, there are plenty of cars out of boost that will pull down 32-34 mpg. My SRT-4 was doing 34 mpg without the benefit of cruise control. Again lots more people with fast compacts should be showing up, Freiburger mentioned this several times over the years and wonders why people don't show up? I think much of it is because of V8 world still looks down on us. We can gain more respect by showing up to their events and being competitive.
@@bradmorris87 I'm building a 2.5L with the stock forged rods and the strong but heavy pistons. At 410whp how long do you think itll survive? I have an f2 cam, beehive racing springs, big valves, ported 655 head with the BMF intake.
ahh the old dodge golf! this is what i was waiting for, drag week B roll. keep up with the unusual shit! i'd almost rather see all the cool oddball shit than another promod.
Back in the day my buddy had one of these as a small project car. He’s like “man I can run 12s in this”keep in mind, this is back in the early 90s so that was Porsche territory. I was like bullshit dude. We go into the DC 395 tunnel and I gotta admit, when he hit 3rd gear, I was shook. That shit PULLED. I miss his car lmao
The Omni and Horizon had few interchangeable parts with their European siblings. Aside from the heavier-looking American body panels and bumpers, the OHV Simca engines were replaced with unique 1.7 L SOHC engines sourced from Volkswagen, while MacPherson strut front suspension took the place of the torsion bar arrangement found in the European Horizon. The Volkswagen engine used an enlarged Chrysler-designed cylinder head and intake manifold and produced 75 hp (56 kW) and 90 lb⋅ft (122 N⋅m).
i have a dodge omni 2.5l as well, hes not short shifting the 2.5 pulls hardest at 3000rpm. i own a 1990 omni the last year they made. its an awesome car if you get over the fact no one makes shit for these cars and every bit of performance you gotta work extra hard for because you gotta get creative.
It's too bad people are just figuring out about the cars I've gown up around and have been kicking ass in for years. Don't worry. My Shelby Charger has goals of beating this guy. Not with the 8Valve though sadly. My Shelby CSX-T is keeping the 8Valve.
16 valve does nothing but double the cost of a valve job, this car is 100hp from engine and 300 hp from turbo... Good numbers for not having an intercooler holding 10 pounds of dry ice.
Those things were notorious for pulling to one side off the line because of the offset half-shafts. I wonder if he has any issues with that, or if he resolved it somehow.
Buenas tardes tengo Dodge omni mod 1980 y no encuentro los bujes de las varillas de los cambios de velocidades me podrían ayudar dónde puedo conseguirlas porfavor lo tengo en durango mexico

+Payton Templeton, It does! You must have missed the part in the video where it states he just completed Drag Week where the cars must drive over 1000 real street miles through small towns and traffic and stop lights, etc. without being trailer and had to carry or tow it's parts for the week. He puts on stock Dodge Daytona wheels and drives it on the street, no problem. The only part of the interior modified is due to the NHRA-required roll cage. That's the only reason the stock seats aren't in it, they didn't fit with the cross bar!
For all of those that say "...they respect this car but hate on honda.." My Shelby Charger was actually kicked out of an import drag race event because after winning 5 races straight they decided my car was "American" and not "Japanese". I was told at first "...as long as it's 4 cyl." Which it was...and "...front wheel drive..." Which it waz...guess I beat too many hondas...Mad respect for mah Mopar peeps!!!
+Emma Jacobs I think the Omni and Horizon were the US market version of that car. We never got a RWD variant, but Iacocca was able to bring Carol Shelby on board to work his magic on these and some of the K-Car variants.

I had a GLH non turbo, it blew the head gasket, so did a different cam and two stage two barrel while repairing, it was pretty quick and fun.
I love this lil car. Makes me smile that people are going way out of the box. Great job with the car and video
I really had a good time just watching that......true sportsmanship.

That looks like a Talbot Sunbeam. (I'm from U.K)
+PT82 It's similar to the UK Chrysler/Talbot Horizon. The Sunbeam was a different, RWD affair
+Emma Jacobs I think the Omni and Horizon were the US market version of that car. We never got a RWD variant, but Iacocca was able to bring Carol Shelby on board to work his magic on these and some of the K-Car variants.
