I worked water taxi when the old bridge was taken apart. I saw it slowly come down over months.

I still remember when the southeast end of the bridge was the Surrey landfill. I was amazed when they turned that whole slope into the suburbs it is today.

Funny that the Port Mann Bridge was about seven years newer than the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge but it was only replaced because they needed to due to traffic congestion. Meanwhile, the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge is long past its 'safe service life' and is living on borrowed time. Once the traffic grid lock is dealt with on the North Shore, the bridge will be the choke point but if that's not enough, one reasonable earthquake of M5.5 within 50 kilometres of that bridge will end its useful life while most likely still left standing. A M6.5 will cause parts of that bridge to collapse and depending on the time of day it happens, many lives will be lost.
When they repaved that bridge deck years ago, they were not able to close the bridge completely for five to six hours a night in order to be able to get a smooth surface. Anyone who has driven over that bridge knows just how rough that bridge deck is. Imagine that, they couldn't even close it for five to six hours each night to pour the concrete and finish it without having the ripples it now has because the bridge was bouncing because of the traffic crossing during paving.
Imagine what it will be like when that bridge fails and there's no crossing for two to three years.
Start building a new bridge with four lanes north and four lanes south plus the guide way in place for a Skytrain line and a pedestrian and separated bicycle lanes.

Im just amazed at the amount of growth around the area since 64 lived inlower mainland since 67 . At least the gvrd is taking care of the water systems better than the bridge building i n the last 40 year's 😊

I heard that the old bridge still had about 25 years of service life left in it. Why the hell did they not just twin the old bridge. Use it as the west bound lanes.

That's what we did in Perth, Australia. The original Narrows Bridge (3 lanes in total) across the Swan River was twinned about 20-odd years ago. You couldn't tell it was only one bridge before.

When you look at the age of buildings and bridges in Europe it shows how wasteful we are here.

That doesn't seem like a very long lifespan for a bridge. I mean look at the Lion's Gate. Still working fine.

If you only knew the real story as to why the Lion's Gate Bridge is still standing...
