Thank you, this was interesting. I'll be glad to never have to use the old Patullo Bridge again. The lanes are so narrow and the open sides are scary if you don't like heights.
I haven't driven that bridge since the early 80s (moved away) but even then the joke was you could drive the Pattullo to see if your car needed a wheel alignment or, if it didn't, you would need one afterwards. That bridge was a POS then and it's remarkable that it's taken this long to replace it. I'm hoping they don't name the new crossing after yet another corrupt politician.
Not only the Patullo bridge needs replacing, so does the Massey tunnel and likely, the Granville street bridge. Maybe the Lions Gate bridge and the Ironworkers Memorial bridges eventually as well.
@@BawkBawkBawk666 The Lions Gate Bridge is already 85 years old. Although parts of it have been replaced over the years, not all of it has. There's also the question of how earthquake resistant these structures are. The Port Mann bridge was replaced after fewer than 60 years of use.
Trucks straddling the two lanes was incredibly annoying to me when I used to cross this bridge regularly. It massively reduces the throughput of an already over-strained bridge - if you're too wide for the (admittedly ridiculously narrow) lanes, then go around - Queensborough and Port Mann are plenty wide. Don't make your need to save a few minutes everybody else's problem. I really wish they had simply prohibited trucks entirely from the bridge years ago, but at least the replacement bridge will solve this problem.
There is no sense making the bridge larger because the surface streets in New West cannot handle the increased volume of traffic. (Mind you, it's not like they can handle the current traffic volumes.) The new bridge is expandable to six lanes which I imagine will happen at some point. The main reason for replacing the bridge is because of structural and other safety concerns with the existing bridge. It had to be replaced.
I've long been curious to know what led to the approach of the north end of the bridge being rebuilt in 1956. The original north end was a weird t-shape, which must have been a nightmare, so some modification was obviously needed as traffic increaded... but I've not been able to find anything about the decision to cut through Queen's Park... was there any controversy around that?
Although I couldn't find anything about a controversy over the removal of some of Queen's Park, the only thing I could find was a pdf on the history of Queen's Park. Here is an excerpt. "In the post-war era Queen’s Park saw many improvements. However, the connection of McBride Boulevard to the Patullo Bridge came with the addition of traffic noise and the loss of the southern edge of the park to the new interchange at Royal Avenue." www.newwestcity.ca/database/files/library/Queens_Park_History.pdf I looked at old maps and it did take a large chunk out of the park for the construction of that interchange. oppositethecity.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/1947-roy-wrigley-map-of-vancouver.jpg I also found a map from 1880 before it officially became Queen's Park, but it is mentioned as a park, almost double the size stretching to the penitentiary. newwestloststreams.ca/timeline/
@@HistoryOfBritishColumbia Wow, thanks for digging that up! Makes ya wonder why they didn't line up the bridge with McBride Blvd? I'm hoping that there must be news articles in the Columbian and/or Sun that cover the realignment. I mean, it's a big deal to cut off park space for a road!
The tractor trailers that you see driving in the middle of two lanes with their hazards flashing are inexperienced drivers and shouldnt be driving; Ive been in my Dads truck and he drove in the right lane no problems, and yes, full size tractor with 53' trailer. I also work on trucks, mostly 5-tonnes and they too drive in the right lane... no excuses for those who cant.
Kicking horse canyon just got completed last year. Still several kms of the Kamloops - AB 4laning left to go though. (If your into mega infrastructure projects, this is one hell of a read) The Fraser valley is FINALLY getting additional lanes along the trans Canada highway, although this won't be completed for a few years, they have broken ground Kinda related to BC, but the CBP (USA border patrol) is building a new crossing building at the aldergrove border. We finished the flood repairs from the atmospheric river a couple years ago along the coquihalla highway I believe the Burnaby mountain gondola finally got approved at SFU And Parks Canada might finally fund the twinning of the remainder of yoho national park. I'm sure I'm missing a few, but these are kinda the big ones.
We’re not. The narrator is. Former Premier John Horgan says it correctly in this video and even the narrator slips up and says it right once. Plus the narrator says premier wrong as well. When it’s a title we say it like the Brits as “premyeer” and not “preemyeer”.
Still so stupid that the plan for the replacement is for 2 lanes each way. Makes me want to pull my hair out and scream. WTF?! Spend billions on a new bridge that will be outdated before it’s even built! Can’t wait for the replacement project for patullo bridge version 3.0 to be announced two weeks before this one is opened.
It is being built wide enough to accommodate 6 lanes. I'm thinking there will be enough pressure to open it with 6 lanes right away or very soon after opening.
Yeah, as stated above, it's designed to be expandable to 6 lanes... but you're right that it is stupid they're not just doing it right away. New Westminster didn't want it to be 6 lanes, because they didn't want any induced demand coming into the city, while Surrey was all for having it be 6 lanes right away and pushed for it, but New Westminster wouldn't budge. They'll only allow it when traffic gets so ridiculously bad that they absolutely HAVE to do it.
They won’t ever expand it to 6 lanes because they don’t want to encourage car use. If people are inconvenienced in their private cars they think so much the better.
Are you going to help pay for the expansion of McBride Avenue to 6 lanes? What about expanding King George Highway to 6 lanes west of 128 Street? I am assuming the pedestrian lanes is experimental to see how well it is used.
When the Alex Fraser bridge was opened in 1986, it was only four lanes. At that time, someone made the statement: "It will take 10 years before the full six lanes will be needed". If memory serves, it took two (or three?) and the full six lanes were opened. History is repeating itself.
Unfortunately New West has a NIMBY attitude, yet they have no problem using adjoining municipalities roads. They seem to try to hinder the movement of traffic on all their roads and try to discourage anyone from travelling through the city.
Thank you, this was interesting. I'll be glad to never have to use the old Patullo Bridge again. The lanes are so narrow and the open sides are scary if you don't like heights.

I appreciate the feedback and will do. Thank you!

Me too.
As a child the Pattullo bridge was always my favourite!

That's a pretty blanket statement. Every bridge has a lifespan

So when is the new bridge going to be complete? When the old one falls apart unexpectedly?
cant wait for the new 2 lane bridge to replace the old 2 lane bridge. traffic has basically remained the same from 1934..
WHY is the new bridge only 2 lanes each way??? There's at least 3 feeder lanes on all 4 directions.
There is no sense making the bridge larger because the surface streets in New West cannot handle the increased volume of traffic. (Mind you, it's not like they can handle the current traffic volumes.) The new bridge is expandable to six lanes which I imagine will happen at some point.

Drove a pickup with stiff rear suspension into new west, hit the last road link and watched my rear end bounce a foot. Almost hit the median
How often do you even get hurricanes up there? I mean I get safety is an issue but aside from one F5 tornado you guys seem pretty safe tbh.

If they could fix it a little and leave it open for emergency vehicles only that would be good

Poor design with a curve in it causing so many crashes.
Yet they didn’t add any lanes, the hell was the point
The new bridge will be out dated the first day it opens. Only four lanes total, what a joke. No building for the future.
