Your channel is so wonderful... You teach so very well. You are the best watercolor teacher I've ever come across and I have been looking. So glad I found your lovely and very helpful channel.. Thank you so very much.
Hello! I just found your channel yesterday and watched 7 videos then decided I'd better paint them so I painted lesson 3 today. It turned out quite well. I'm a complete beginner trying to learn watercolor at the age of 70 so I appreciate your step-by-step approach. Thank you! Sandy, Raleigh NC USA
Greetings from the PNW😊Just found you today after typing in 'watercolor tutorial series for beginners.' Just want to say THANKYOU for an extensive series for the beginner. I appreciate your generosity in investing so much of your time...this indeed is a gift for us newbies!!!🎉 I have been studying multiple other tutorials for about 1 week now, but this is the first tutorial on landscape that I have tried. Very pleased with the outcome, and looking forward to working thru the rest of the series. 🤗
Hello from California! Thanks for doing these videos as they are very helpful. I have been painting for 2 years but decided to "start over" in order to get a better grip on the basics. I'm very happy to have recently found you to help me. After this 3rd tutorial I bought your book. I keep peaking over your shoulder to view your studio and was happy to see a photo in your book. I am always envious of others' studios and hope someday to have more than just a part of a table. Thank you again for providing these wonderful resources.
Hello, from Canada. I started painting 3 months ago. I took a course and painted every day for 3 hours for 3 weeks. I’ hooked. I’m so glad to have found you on RUclips. I watched your #3 then watched again and tried. Your explanation about the horizon and where to place things was excellent. I also liked the way you mixed paint and explained it. You are right it is easy to work small when starting out. I wish I could show you my painting. It is the first one I have done that I am pleased with. I hope you are still making videos. Looking forward to trying #3 again in 10 weeks.
Joe, I haven't painted with watercolor in 40 years. I am spending some quality time with your videos. I consider it to be priceless class time! Thanx for the reintroduction to this media...Paul.
Sneaky..you also are teaching the ..value of values by eliminating a complicated color scheme. I’m just starting, but as an older person who used to be a pro musician, I’m finding it difficult to enjoy the process as my old way of practicing madly and obsessively to succeed in a stressful career intrudes. I’m glad I found your channel, thanks for your efforts!
Thanks for the feedback John. Hopefully my videos can keep your watercolor painting stress level to a dull roar as you get the process under control. :-)
Hello Gretta, I am very happy you are get some value from my videos. Thank you for joining the learning journey. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Your lessons are great! The monochromatic seascape helps so much but the angled view is very hard to follow. The best in my opinion is the straight view from the top. Thx so much
Glad you like my videos Hanna. Thanks for the feedback abou the angles view. I have minimised it use in my future videos - just for when I need to show how I am holding my brush, and whenever my head gets in the way of the above shot! :-)
omg i just painted along with you and i actually made it! i cant believe i made a real painting! i signed it too, like a pro ahaha thank you so much for the lesson!
Just found you today, Joe!! Also ordered your book on Amazon as well!! You are a terrific teacher! Thank you for sharing your lessons for FREE here on RUclips!! I’ve been painting for 2 years now and am in love with watercolor!! 😊
You are my God Send Guide , Thank You so much !! I just happened to land on your channel and already finished two lessons and cannot wait to go through the rest.
I painted the seascape today! HA!! much to learn. My paint color was more sepia than blue/black. but I went with it. I had the most trouble with the figures and the shadows of the tiny birds on the sand. Blotted and repainted about three times. I'm probably going to do this exercise again. I wish there was a way to post work, so you could critique it.
Well done!. The more you paint the better you will become. I am setting up a patreon account which will give students access to a private group page where they can all share their work.
Thanks Joe! You are a wealth of information with watercolor. Even after painting for nearly 40 years, I’ve picked up some great tips! I’ll refer your channel to my beginner students.
You are such an amazing teacher! liked and subscribed!!! I didn't make it as well as you but I guess with time I'll be able to do better!! thank you for these lessons, Joe.
I tried this tutuoral today. (Doesn't look much like yours but it's a start!) I just started learning about watercolor this year with no previous artistic experience and am working my way through your tutorials. I really appreciate your wealth of knowledge and teaching style. Thank you!
wow'so excited to get started with this simply seascape when my gear arrived in the post, thank you Joe.its a wonder you don't have a patreon as im sure you would have a lot of guys like myself.
Thanks for this demo! I loved watching you paint the clouds and appreciated your explanation of the heads aligning close to the horizon line. II would have liked to have seen how the values in the painting looked once the watercolor dried. The cliffs and water appeared to be close in value. Is that what you might see in real life or would the cliffs be darker? Hope to hear back from you, Joe and thanks in advance for your help!
You are welcome! This demo was designed to help students get familar with all the basic brush strokes. in real life cliffs may be darker or lighter, depending on the lighting conditions and the colour of the cliff material. Best just to look at various photos to see what I mean. Also, it is quite likely some parts of a cliff will be darker than others e.g. around rocks for instance.
I will add this to my list of videos to produce. I could write a book on it, so a bit hard to cover it all in comments. Look up linear perspective and aerial perspective. If you apply both of these as a guide you should be able to add lots of depth to your landscapes.
Thank you for these lessons. I am just wondering if it would be ok to use cobalt blue or ultramarine (both of which I have) for your lessons. Or does Phthalo Blue (Red shade) react in a particular way with those other two colours and so I would not be able to achieve your results?
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Just learning watercolour and so exciting. Im wondering though about contaminating the colours. What do you do to clean them? Ive been cleaning my brush each time so I don't dirty the colours. So Im a bit confused.
I am very happy you are enjoying my videos. Do not worry about contaminated colours. Quite often the contaminating colours are those that will be mixed together in any case. Only clean your brush if going from one colour to its complementary colour e.g. going from blue to orange. I will produce a video on this in the future as my reply cannot cover all situations.
I see you have something to rest your brushes on, what is this? I have seen ceramic and resin brush rests but they don’t hold but 3-4 brushes. Thanks much!
Since I don’t have a 3d printer I will have to continue using my folded cloth napkin to place my brushes on with the bristles hanging off the cloth. The brushes do not roll on the cloth. Thank you for your answer.
Excellent demo Sir. Very well shot well edited , very good audio, and excellent in dept explanation. ... Only one thing disturbed is that the captions were covering the video ... Hope this must have been rectified in further videos. Thanks for uploading free course. Many people will get the benefits and can learn watercolor in a proper step by step method. Thank you once again. Stay Blessed Always...
I have never used Daniel Smith paints, so I can't compare. Go with French Ultramarine, a cool red like Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson, or Crimson Magenta, and one of the yelllows. For the beginner exercises, colour is not so important.
@@robinwild1 Most of the time yes. I intend to cover this topic in a future video where I explain all the various options for board angle. But, in my case, 99% of the time my board is at and angle. In my studio it is at about 20 degrees.
Thanks for your instructions. I have a queston about wettening the paper. I usually wet the paper and fasten it with tape on a wooden board. Then I wait foor several hours to see the paper is dry and flat. I saw your way of working without taping the paper on a board. And I've tryed it too. Probably I did somerthing wrong, because in the end I had to fasten it as before with tape, because the paper curled. So may be you can explane what could be the reason of this. I wetted the paper several times as you explaned in one of the video's and wettened the board too. I use paper with a weight of 300gr/m. Hope to hear from you.
Just tried this one which was made to look so easy by you but turned into a bit of a disaster by me 🤨 however I really enjoyed identifying my mistakes & look forward to trying again later. Far to heavy handed on the sea bit with no waves 🙁
I have been painting with watercolours for nearly quarter of a century Joe, and teaching for most of that time - so I do have a little advantage over you. :-) Seriously though, the important thing is to practice, observe what worked and what didn't, work out what skill area needs improving and then concentrate on that either in the same painting when you repeat it or in similar one. Just have fun with a brush in your hand.
