Huh, i see it as the molting transitions them to the final phase of their lives in which they have (roughly) 24 hours. Btw, they molt dozens of time throughout their nymph lifespan :)
I used to live in Ohio where there were TONS of mayflies. The only reason there were so many of them is because I lived very close to a lake. I'm surprised a lot of people have never heard of mayflies, or as I like to call them, junebugs
Mayflies are also known as shadflies! In canada! I have to put up with them every season! Im just thankful that they dont bite! Did you know that shadflies are a positive thing, if they dont show up in their ushall mating spots across the glob it means theres something wrong with the waters. True fact.
The flies and the way they were swarming looked like Hexagenia Limbata. So my best guess would be somewhere up in the midwest. Maybe Michigan if I had to take a guess.
How many hatchings could one expect per year? Curious because ours start typically Fathers Day Weekend and hatch about 10 times until around the mid to end of August on Wilson Lake AL (TN River)
+JubJub444 Have you ever experienced the horror of mayflies? Well I can tell you, they are the exact embodiment of Satan. They're annoying little shits that cling onto everything, including people. They leave dark stains on you if crush them, and make disturbing crunching sounds if you step on them.
I live right by a lake, and omg!!!!! Every summer we get gazillion of them! Every morning we get a THICK LAYER of their dead bodies laying outside of our door. I am not even exaggerating, we have to cover our nose and mouth when we go out in the afternoon, because the air is filled with mayflies. It is so scary, I open my door and RUN outside.
They are water cleaners in the pupa sage crawling on the bottoms of streams and lake. shows healthy waters if you see them. a lot of other animals feed off of them birds, bats, fish, frogs.
One time I was in Truro NB on vacation and there was a whole bunch of them on the side of the the cottage so we we were having a bonfire that night a grabbed one cooked over the fire and ate it
There was one on my curtain today... never seen one over here in switzerland. It is a male. Do i have to be scared now that someone infected us with the actual pest looking like dragonflies
@SamuraiX38 There are some political adds and war veteran adds on here that are like 20 minutes long. lol ( Of course you can skip them but that still is a huge add )
прожить такую долгую жизнь (считай просуществовать а не жить) и чтобы несколько часов спарится и помереть..это пипец. хуже наверно только комары (живут одни сутки). но эти- не едят даже ничего -не питаются
Why are y’all so mean to mayflies? They’re harmless, they cause no problems whatsoever, they’re the inspiration of many fishing hook designs and even the name of ships, and they’re cousins of dragonflies and damselflies. Plus these things lived long before humans so we can’t keep acting like they’re aliens.
All the mayflies in this video died...
Goofyro omg ur right
Ooy
Cuz it was 8 years ago ngl 😂

@@Jamnm456 yeah
Get Elon to restock them.
Hats off to camera man
1:45 how big is this mayfly? It looks huge
The fact that they molt despite only living for 24 hours total is arguably the most absurd part about it
Huh, i see it as the molting transitions them to the final phase of their lives in which they have (roughly) 24 hours. Btw, they molt dozens of time throughout their nymph lifespan :)

There's actually an insect called a june bug. Could never be mistaken for a mayfly.
Junebugs are actual bugs lol
Only in Ohio
I thought the junebugs were June beetles ??
Stop
Mayflys and June bugs are massively different please use Google it's your friend
love to get these in my area. that means FISHING TIME =D
oh calm down everyone, they're harmless. like every other creepy crawly, they are simply minding their own business.
"Like every other creepy crawly"
Um.. I'm pretty sure there are deadly creepy crawlers out there that HAVE killed humans with poisonous bites.
wow... These comments escalated quickly lol I agree. I do usually kill House centipedes though... they are too fast to catch and really freak me out.
@@Mattthewshaw "these comments sure have escalated" literally only 3 comments lol
@@amynettles9758 I was refering to the comments on the entire video. Not just this string of comments. Lol
Their purpose is to reproduce and to be eaten by bats, fish and other animals.
They look like little fairies when flying 😩
They are so majestic and lovable!
Funniest thing I've heard today!

Ouha, beautiful.
They're great for catching fresh water fish. It's pretty annoying when they swarm though. Makes it kinda hard to breathe.
Why dont they call the mayfly a dayfly
That’s another name for them
the eggs look the hard oil seeds you find on your skin and you have to pinch it out
That if they had stingers.
No thabks
No mayflies were harmed making this video.
