- As long as you're calibrating your expectations, you're likely to have a blast with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. It looks sharp, the combat is a lot of fun, and the story, for all of its issues, has its bright spots, especially if you're invested in the Final Fantasy 7 universe.
Sure, crucial aspects of the experience have clearly not aged very well, but there's still more than enough here to attract not only those who've played the original Crisis Core, but also new fans who're looking to dive deeper into the larger FF7 story. Without a doubt, this is the best way to reunite with this underappreciated PSP classic.
Square must be super proud/confident in this game if the review embargo lifts a week before release. I’m excited for this.

I wouldn't say that Crisis Core is under-appreciated. To this day it's still considered one of the best PSP games ever made and it's beloved by JRPG fans everywhere. I'm very excited to get my hands on this updated version that I was never expecting would come to fruition.

Can't say it's underappreciated when it's getting remade
The newer voices for this are gonna take some getting use to. Especially Zack's new voice actor. Admittedly the original Crisis Core's voice direction was very ackward which caused talented actors to sound as such. But Rick made it work with how he knew how to play up the silly and get serious when it was time to. This is why I felt like Zack was the most normal character in the game. He almost felt like an audience surrogate during some of the far out things. Like when Angeal trys to sound profound while talking about dumbapples. Or how he tells Genesis to shut up when he starts spouting poems from Loveless. Given the fact that this new version is essentially gonna follow that original's voice direction its gonna prove to be even more ackward. Because we're hearing newer voices and some of them might say the lines worse than the originals.
I wish the first half of the story was re written. It's tough to keep a level of excitement. This is coming from someone who played the psp version. It's gets more interesting later half in the story. The new game trailer release all the best part if the damm game lol

I still haven’t really gotten over Zack’s new voice lol. Like, I don’t think he’s bad it’s just that Rick Gomez really defined the character for me - his growth from naive, excitable kid to battle-weary but hopeful soldier was perfectly exemplified through his performance. He just hit the perfect tone and was genuinely likeable. I love all the new remake voice actors but I really miss Zack’s OG.

Its not Sony that's stopping it. Square Enix takes forever to let us enjoy any port.
It originally was going to just be a port, but when they upscaled everything, it was so bad that they had to redo much of the visual quality so with that much effort needed anyway, they just made this instead. That's why there won't be an original version available.

Definitely check out "switch up" they covered it, and spoilers it's an amazing version, obviously not as good as the big consoles like ps5 (60fps to 30fps), but damn, they've still got things working on it, like active reflections on handheld mode!!

I’m torn with getting this on PS5 or on Switch. I feel like Switch would be best because this was intentionally made for handheld use and designed for short moments of gameplay - but at the same time will I miss out on the next gen graphics on PS5?

Combat is what I enjoy most in JRPGs, so if it's as fun as he's saying it is then I don't mind the animations being wonky. It just adds to the anime cringe charm. We'll get a nice darker FF game with 16. For now let's enjoy the silliness of this spinoff game.
Combat isn’t unfortunately very stale in this game just a heads up. It was when it released on psp and will be more so now. Back then it at least had the fact it was a mobil game but playing thru attacking with really just one button IMO isn’t very enjoyable
@@ken5040 Well it's a remake. So I'd imagine the combat has to be scaled up a tad bit more than the original. All the reviews I've seen have said that the combat is better and more accessible in comparison to the PSP game.

Ken Still I've never played the original, and I like FF7 related games and media. So I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I'm not expecting combat to be as refined as Remake, but I am expecting some decent and fun hack and slash shit nonetheless.
@@PlanetShlorpian this isn’t the first psp final fantasy to come to consoles, certainly the game can be enjoyed, I did myself back in 2008. It’s good more people are getting a chance to play it but I just see this as a missed opportunity. The only thing that bothers me are the people misleading potential buyers. Enjoy the game tho man, the parts with Vincent were my favorite!

It's freaking awesome I played this on the psp many times, great story content and the updated UI and gameplay will definitely make this much more fun, glad to see more giving ff a chance been a fan since 1998.
One thing you should know: the original’s character and materia experience systems are tied to the slot machine-like DMW. Meaning these leveled up at random. Since the review didn’t mention this changed any I’m assuming it’s still the same here.

@FFSamurai So this is a common misconception. Leveling up is not random. There is an invisible xp tracker. Once it hits the threshold, the DMW on purpose will try to get 777 to level up.

They hinted that there might be a post-credits scene for Rebirth like Intermission had, but they flat out said that nothing is changing in the actual game, this is a remaster of the original.

@@Steelix371 Agreed, the original game is unchanged, but they said that they may put a post-credit scene in. Not linking the two together, but just teasing Rebirth, like Intermission had.
It's not been confirmed by anyone if such scene exists, likely because that's part of the NDA and they aren't allowed to talk about anything past chapter 3

How has the story " aged for the worse"?
It showed sephiroths decent into madness, how cloud and Zack bonded, something that wasn't even really shown in the original ff7, it showed Zack tragic end, his relationships with aerith and the turks. It's one of if not the best prequel games ever (its a small list but it is near the top of it)
most likely, the reviewer was talking about the dialogue instead of the story as a whole. The dialogue can be rather stilted and cringy at times.
You literally described half of the game's story while the rest of it was competely terrible especially with the whole Angeal and Genesis subplot.
I def agree with you. This review felt incredibly dry for a game with as much heart as this one. Like they had to fill a quota. And anything to do with Angeal and Genesis was still important for Zack’s story and for making Crisis Core still feel like the OG FF7 in theme and formula whether people think so or not. It also gives contrast to and explains why and how Sephiroth is so much stronger than a regular SOLDIER. All crucial notes that come together to execute what I believe to be the best possible way to construct a prequel for a deep game with such a strong fanbase
The story is shockingly awful. Hollander and his fuckin chicken wing. Stop. Angeal "imprinting" his face all over every dog he could find. Dogs...with his face, just, no...this will forever look so absolutely stupid it should speak for itself. But there goes Angeal again, jerking onto a dog. Did I mention fatasss Hollander and that chicken wing?
Genesis, genesis, is....probably the worst character, almost ever. Even more egregious, hes retconned to "push" Sephiroth over the edge.

The only positive in this game was the ending sequence. And that was kinda great. But the other 98 percent of it, was so astoundingly stupid, you could have god himself literally come out of my console himself and I'd still be going "that story was shit bro, go back and do it again"

Nah man. The story in this game is bad. It bounces between being derivative and straight up dumb.
Most of the good stuff that you listed is mostly just filling in around the edges of the story from FF7OG, with stuff we probably could've guessed anyways. And even those are undercut by new stuff actively making it worse, like Seph being goaded at the Neibelheim reactor by Genesis or just lazily ripping off story beats from the OG, like how Zack meets Aerith in the exact same way that Cloud met her, or Zack's train ride intro.
And the original parts of the new story are just awful. Genesis and Angeal are 2D characters and 3rd rate Sephiroth knock-offs, one wing and all. The new mad scientist is just a Hojo knock-off. At best, they are just painfully derivative and boring. At worst, they retrospectively serve to make the OG characters less interesting and unique.
So one thing that’s a deal breaker for me I hoped you’d have covered is if the leveling system is still tied to that slot machine. Is it more traditional this time around?
To those saying “it’s not random” yes, I know. I read the gamefaqs article that describes the algorithm needed to figure out when you level. Does not change that it feels random while playing, especially when you get two levels in one fight or when you make no gains after ten battles. Plus it’s stupid I’d have to do long division for a feature literally every other game out there has as a sub menu.
Should still have the slot machine level up, it's mostly a remaster so the core gameplay should remain the same.
The leveling system isn't actually random. There's an invisible exp bar based on how many enemies you beat. Once you reach the threshold, you'll automatically get a level up from the slots. It worked that way in the original as well.
The leveling isn't random. As someone else mention, once you get enough xp, the DMW will automatically level you up. You can wear a curse ring to prevent the DMW from moving and stop you from leveling up. And if you wore it long enough and remove it, you'll see triple level ups at times
All of the game mechanics are the same save for being able to store limit breaks, and getting a second stance when you get the buster sword.
The level up wasn´t random.

Zack’s voice breaks it for me. Getting the audience to love him was the one thing CC’s otherwise ropey story did right, and Rick Gomez’s performance was a big part of that. I want to like the new guy’s voice, I really do, but it just isn’t working.

I don't think anyone is allowed to spoil that as part of the NDA. They did say nothing in the game itself is changing, but there may be a post-credits scene but has not been confirmed.
That would be a huge spoiler if they did that so I'd prefer them to not reveal it until after release if so.

I think people are a bit confused. There isn't a change to Crisis Core, nor is there a change to the original FF7 story. Both still happened and are still canon. Remake is an attempt at altering the past. By who exactly or what specifically to be altered, we don't 100% know yet, but presumably it's post Advent Children Sephiroth trying to change how things play out so he can ultimately win. I digress a bit there, but basically Remake is completely standalone as a sequel, and not tied to this at all. Crisis Core: Reunion isn't part of the Remake trilogy, it's just a remaster of an old PSP game.
The change you mighty be referring to has already been seen in Remake, but again, it's not a change to this story. This still happened.

The timing of crisis core reunion after we saw Jack alive in the end of ff7 remake is no coincidence! Even the title is "reunion" is suspicious!
@@brutus85xbox They were actually pretty clear during the release of 7Remake that it was not going to just be a 1 for 1 retelling of the original game. Obviously they couldn't outright say that it was a sequel because that was the big reveal of the game. In parallel, they have also been pretty clear about this release just being a remaster of the PSP version of Crisis Core with nothing changing in terms of story. They said there won't be any new content or scenes or anything, but they may put in a post-credit teaser for Rebirth like Intermission had, but I don't think anyone is allowed to confirm yet if that exists or not due to the NDA.

PS5 will look better, but either will be fine I'm sure. PC for me. I don't really care for consoles much personally.
It depends on what your schedule is like, and how you approach games.
Since the original was a portable game, they kept the many bite-sized sidequests, which makes it a nice fit for switch if you want to take it with you, for example playing it on a lunch break at work or between classes.
However, If you have a lot of opportunities to play for extended periods of time in one sitting, the PS5 looks and runs better, which is better suited for people who like to play at home on a TV screen.
What I want to know is does this crisis core still spoil big plot points for ff7?

Pull back your excitement a bit, it’s a very underwhelming game. Remember it’s just a very old mobil game with a new coat of paint

It’ll still be an enjoyable stand-alone experience, but you really have to play 1997’s FF7 first to really get the full effect. And if you ask me, it’s totally worth it and some.
Crisis core will actually ruin a few major plot-points the first does so well in terms of storytelling and writing, but if you’re okay spoiling that for yourself, as I stated earlier, Crisis Core is still a story worth playing on it’s own
Of course this game is the prequel to FF7 so you’ll be fine

Most FF games are their own separate totally unrelated story so yes.
You can, but just keep in mind that this is a prequel to FF7, so certain things that are supposed to be a big reveal in FF7 won't be a surprise to you anymore because you saw it in chronological order, rather than it being set up as a plot twist if that makes sense.
It's basically like if you watched the prequel Star Wars trilogy before the original. It's still enjoyable, but the story won't be a surprise to you.
I would had galdy paid $50 , if Zack's VA wasn't as bad. Looks like a game i will be playing in Japanese. With English sub titles. It's honestly, only worth $30. If you already played the OG CC. And are not sold on his VA. Just wait for it to go on sell. If you haven't played CC or are new to FF7, it's a must buy. Me, ill get it when like $30 bucks on ebay , brand new.

The game was $50 on psp when it released in 2008, this is not a remake just a remaster. Not close to being worth $50. It is not tied to the remake at all, which is also why it is multiplat unlike the remake.

Wish they spent more time talking about this game itself as opposed to spending 5 minutes of the 8 minute review talking about it in relation to FF7 and the original Crisis Core.
They covered pretty much everything though. They aren't allowed to cover anything that happens after Chapter 3. I can't think of anything they missed.

It's about a 15 hour game on your first playthrough if you don't do all of the side stuff. There's 300 side missions.

Zack was given a different direction I think with being less serious in the younger scenes and more serious/desensitized in his older scenes. I personally think the direction is more fitting for his character. I still prefer the original voice, but I don't think the new one is bad by any means.

Rick Gomez did a perfect hit, flawless victory performance as Zack, so nobody is going to match that, but the new voice isn't bad, it's just not Rick Gomez.. which is fine.. change will happen whether we like it or not. That's life. But again, that doesn't make something different bad just because you don't like it or don't agree with the direction of it.

To Dustin…it’s thinking like that where these game and entertainment companies keep overpricing their products because people like you compare it to unrelated things and say it’s fairly priced. Why did they change the buster sword 💀 it doesn't look like a honorable heirloom anymore and just a bootleg dragonslayer. They could've kept the cc design at the beginning and then have Zack change it to the remake version bc it broke in a battle against genesis or something like that
That and Tifa's outfit were both changed. My guess about the buster sword is that Rebirth will likely reference scenes from this game so for consistency sake they changed the model to match. And Tifa.. well lets just say that sexualizing a 15 year old girl is super gross, so that one speaks for itself lol. I actually quite like her updated look better than the ridiculous outfit she had on in the original CC lol.
From a certain point of view, they didn't actually change Tifa's outfit; they just restored it to how it looked in OG FF7. Crisis Core embellished her cowboy outfit a whole lot, added a ton of little details and made it look pretty busy. Of course, whether or not you prefer Reunion's version is up to personal taste, but yeah.

@@TwistedSisler I can't remember the name of the materia, but there was a special yellow materia that would allow Zack to do a mean punch forward to one foe, doing pretty insane damage.

You can absolutely play this and understand the story, but just remember that this is a prequel to FF7, so the things that are supposed to be a surprise reveal in FF7 won't be if you play this game first. Think of it as like watching the prequel Star Wars trilogy before you watched the original. You can still enjoy it, but you won't be surprised at the plot twists later.

as soon as i get my steam deck this will be the first game i will play in it.
Plays great on Steam Deck without changing any settings. Just start and play for a great experience. I'm 5 hours in without any issues.

Crisis core has aged just fine storywise and it’s dialogue makes perfect sense albeit a bit goofy, why do people pretend it doesn’t? It’s one of the most emotional games ive played especially the ending
It's split down the middle at being one of the best and worst games ever made. For everything it does really well, there's something it does equally bad. The game has some of the most emotional moments, but also some of the dumbest story plots and lines of dialogue ever to be put into a video game.
I would rate it as one of the best bad games ever made lol.

it's kinda funny in a way. when the psp was new and i played this game, i thought the graphics was pretty amazing.

It's a good thing they decided to change Zack's VA. The old one sounded silly and childish, which always ruined Zack's image. The new one is much more mature and solid, which is good.

The only bad part of this game is Zack’s new voice. Just bc they recasted didn’t mean they NEEDED to recast him, the original voice was perfect and beloved for a reason. I hope the actor performs more like how he did (SPOILER FOR INTERGRADE)
In the ending of integrade vs how he does in this game. That at least sounded passable and less whiny
That's not how VA contracts work though. If someone is contracted to voice a character, that's the person they have to use unless the contract says otherwise.
Also, his voice does change when he gets older in the story, but I think his younger Zack voice sounds fine though. Not as good as Rick's obviously, but that doesn't mean I dislike the new one.
Remake does NOT reimagine the original game. The original game is still canon to Remake. Remake takes place AFTER Advent Children in the series, but the time setting is during the events of the original game. It's a sequel that continues the story, not a reimagining of the old story.

They recreated the cutscenes from scratch to be frame for frame identical to the PSP (originally they just wanted to upscale it as a port, but it looked so bad that they had to completely redo it all). An absolute TON of work went into making this.. lazy development couldn't be further from the truth at all.

The combat system looks like crap. I hoped they’d rework it too, so that it doesent rely on the dopamine hit caused by a rng system
The combat system is reworked - it's not nearly as clunky in terms of attacking and using spells/abilities. The randomized slot system is de-emphasized a little bit, but it's definitely still there though.
The combat system has gotten a complete overhaul. Obviously you still have to have the DMW, it's literally part of the game's story.

Yeah, they desexualized her because she's 15 years old at the time of her appearance in the story. I actually quite like her new look in this game.

BRO I remember my friend had this on psp right I tried it and hated it for some reason. No this is fucking badass on next gen let me tell ya something this game is alot of fun holy shit this soundtrack is kick ass and my favorite is the battles system is fucking 👌 now i heard a few ppl say they don't like the when they have the ransom encounters I was like huh bro then ya just forgot the fun shit that brought us to the dance was battles like this loving it I'm hooked.

@@holy9781 You can't really just touch up those conversations. If you changed the animation, you would have to remake the entire scene and edit the music to match, and the dialogue would need to be completely redone as well in order to match the new animations. You'd end up basically remaking the entire game from scratch and that's a bit outside the scope of what this is. This is more of a remaster.

@@loneaquila writing can transcend any form of media. The writing in this game was flat, derivative, silly, and insane. But so are a lot of anime stories. This game did well because it expanded upon what people already LOVED about ff7 original. But Angeal, Genesis, knock off hojo, wings, etc. Those actively made me want to claw my eyes out because it felt so out of place. Most of the time the characters don't even talk like humans. Being on limited hardware doesn't make bad writing any better
And while the gameplay of og was on extremely limited hardware it was still repetitive and unengaging. Reunion has appeared to remedy that though.

Jokes aside, I do agree that the story is god awful stupid and the mechanics were terrible, but nevertheless this game has always had a charm that made all that forgivable and still loveable. I compare it to the movie Armageddon which is probably the best bad movie ever made lol.
