      It was because it was split along the grain, not sawed, lead-for-brains!

      @@tanyajackson3833 Splitting along the grain using wedges actually leaves a straight line as the carpenter would invariably aim for a straight board and would therefore rotate the wood to find the optimum face for splitting to achieve that. Waney boards are a 1930s affectation whereby the bark is kept on the 'live' edge of the outside of the tree. Whereas flat carpentered boards are sourced from the stable centre of the tree. That's also why waney boards are often curl as they transit though from the unstable outer layers into the more stable center. They defy logical wood selection based on 1000 of years of carpentry; selection based on quality. You won't find a single waney board on a timber proto-Grecian temple. despite being originally entirely hewn from logs and planks. Even the logs were selected for their straightness and architectural uniformity.
