In 1980 I drove my 1959 MGA from Miami to California. I had a Tom Waits tape, Joni Mitchel, and this Ricky Lee Jones got me through being broken down in the desert salt flats at 1:00am
I bought her debut album when I was 16, in 1979, played it for years, and dreamed away in her beautiful lonely sad world...I didnt know anybody who liked her music, I was lonely too as teenager...and now I found this live version of last chance Texaco, and realize she was live even better than on recording, so intense, straight to my soul...her music kept me alive.
Great comment. I was a few years older at the time, and I too spent hours listening to this masterwork. Still one of my favorites to this day. And today is the first time I remember ever seeing her perform live. Very powerful stuff.
@Mike Bailey I agree with your response to Sydney Prescott about the best of music. I was blessed to have parents that loved music and allowed us kids to spend money on music. My collection of albums have been a calming presence throughout my life. A friend of mine said she thought music was my first language.
She gets lost In a song In front of thousands of people and expresses Her innermost feelings and does It differently every time. Last chance Texaco Is the story of a woman expressing Her heartfelt dripping emotion over a lost love...Incredible and hauntingly beautiful....
One of our greatest performers. I hold out hope that, before too long, people will recognize this. And "performer" is the word. Yup, she writes great songs. but she performs her original songs as well as the works of others remarkably.
Grateful to see this performance of Last Chance Texaco. Rickie is one of my all time favorites and I always go back to her albums especially Rickie Lee Jones, Pirates, and The Magazine. They are pure masterpieces. I have heard many of these songs well over a hundred times and never get enough.
Stumbled upon this again and realized how absolutely breathtaking Rickie Lee Jones was .....and IS. So many of her songs, and especially her performances, just bring me to my knees.
Ya gotta love that Doppler-effect car-passing-by sound-effect she wrote into the end. It totally adds to the loneliness of the broken down car on the highway analogy.
Perfectly said Benjamin Schofield, "when she's this fucking good with all the feedback and crap monitoring in front of 300,000 she kills it, whatever she's wearing!"
What I really love about Rickie here is how absolutely confident and self-assured she is, on top of her game and seems to be totally loving it. It's just out of this world xx
Been on this planet for a bit (69 years) and remember well the first night I spent with this album in an apartment in Silver Springs, MD. Must say, as far as I am concerned, one of the best songs, lyrics, I have ever heard to date.
queen sang her ass off!! I'm especially loving her register switch at 2:50 wowowowow and then at 3:07 she kills that note! prime example of an artist using their voice as an instrument, with excellent technique to boot ✨
I love putting this song on my stereo, getting out my bass and playing along. Been doing so for decades. I have never played this song with any of the bands I've played with. Doesn't matter. I just love the dynamics and melody. Rickie's singing on this recording is touching. I feel the same about Johnette Napolitano on Caroline. Never played that song other than to the recording either. Many of my favourite songs have not been hits.
+Nial Cradog Pefectly stated Nial, man I have always loved Ricki but kind of let her get lost in the shuffle of all the music I listen to. Time to revisit her, this is just incredible, and yes, that is understatement.
Never be another like Miss Rickey Lee. I had the opportunity to see her in Denver late 70s. My prayers and blessing to her. Rickie Lee is on s level by herself.
oh my god Rickie, I grew up with my sisters performing your stuff 30 years ago. Although I have wonderful memories of your music from all those years ago this is the first time I have seen you sing. Wow, this explains why I sat for hours back in the 80's helping my sisters perform your songs. It is now 2017 and I hope my 12 year old daughter can connect. I'll try, I promise.
I'm seeing her in Brooklyn for the first time and I hope she plays this song! I used to listen to her first album on cassette over and over again and this was my favorite!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH I love you Rickie Lee and this song is awesome. Thank you for supporting Farm Aid with the king Mr. Willie Nelson! :) You don't know the miles I've traveled and money I've spent to see you play and sing. You're my best soul artisit and I just can't quit you. :)
I saw her a few years ago in Fall River, Ma. When I heard the opening of this I let out a yelp that scared. her. It almost brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. She's a great, quirky, unique and unpredictable performer. It seemed like there was no set list. She played what she felt like it as the show went along even when she had other musicians with her she would call out the next one. Loved it.
This broad nails me to the wall every time. WHENEVER I hear this song, the artistic presentation makes me well up inside. Thanks for posting this fantastic vid.
Raw American talent. Love these tunes with Dylan, Mitchell and Armatrading getting left behind with her perfection on this album. Love her voice with a touch of Carol Brunett and other legendary singers mixed in to create this Genuis.

Incredible. One person with a song, a voice and a guitar creates an earthquake in the soul.
Her vocalization of a car whizzing by on a lonely desert highway may be the finest ending to any song ever written.

I was born in 79😁
@Mike Bailey Spent many an hour daydreaming to her music. That year brought many changes to my life...

I am older than you my Husband was killed in a car accident in 78 I bought Ricki’s album in 79 also I fell in love with it

She definitely did, u can see her face reliving where she was at that particular moment or particular months
Always a fav. Seen here only twice and you've hit the nail on the head!
It's about a woman who is getting old and lonely and desperate. It's about a man in a similar predicament. Last chance Texaco for both of them.
I have reached this place in my life.
Tell me about it.
was here this day, one of the biggest surprises!
One of our greatest performers. I hold out hope that, before too long, people will recognize this. And "performer" is the word. Yup, she writes great songs. but she performs her original songs as well as the works of others remarkably.
Gotta be the best mix of car and romance metaphors.
Beautiful imagery. Relistening to her music is like going to a museum over and over, just to see "that" painting one more time.
Beautiful comment.
Extraordinary. One of the best songs ever written, and her performance here is on another level.
Grateful to see this performance of Last Chance Texaco. Rickie is one of my all time favorites and I always go back to her albums especially Rickie Lee Jones, Pirates, and The Magazine. They are pure masterpieces. I have heard many of these songs well over a hundred times and never get enough.
Such great singer! This song is one of my favorites of many of her songs!! Thank you!
finest chick ever with the finest song,,,thanks rickie . your eternal poetic spirit always lifts me to places i cant go by myself
Stumbled upon this again and realized how absolutely breathtaking Rickie Lee Jones was

So true

Such an emotional performer. This is the only time I've seen her with short hair and it looks great on her.
queen sang her ass off!! I'm especially loving her register switch at 2:50 wowowowow and then at 3:07 she kills that note! prime example of an artist using their voice as an instrument, with excellent technique to boot ✨
Man, I enjoyed that. Takes me back to beautiful times. Thanks Rickey.
One of my top 10 favourite songs of all time

From the first time I heard "The Last Chance Tecaco" by Rickie Lee Jones I found myself so emotional it brought me to tears.
57 yr old divorced white male. What an amazing voice she has. Angelic! Beautiful!!!
I've thought of many compliments for this performance and realised they were all understatement.
+Nial Cradog Pefectly stated Nial, man I have always loved Ricki but kind of let her get lost in the shuffle of all the music I listen to. Time to revisit her, this is just incredible, and yes, that is understatement.
+Anthony Salvati Same here, Anthony.

This song says it all for me. Has for decades. I hear what she has to say and I feel it. You have to be hurt to know this song.
The emotion in her songs is powerful. I tried to do 'Skeletons' at a coffeehouse gig once and I choked up at the verse about being shot. :(
so fabulous! I've had it on a Farm Aid cassette forever but this sounds way better. And those Texaco earrings!
I wish I had seen her in concert
After all these years ....still her courage touches me to be that vulnerable on stage and sober. Love.
I got her first album in 1979 - boy do i feel old. A unique talent.
The most honest soul I have ever held hands with.. once we were young and invinceable
Still get goosebumps every. single time. I listen to this, from its original vinyl release till now (7.22).
Just brilliant; so good it's otherworldly. I love seeing Rickie's eyes up close. She is loving every minute.
God I love her ! July 2022 and her voice and music still blows me away ! ❤️
I'm seeing her in Brooklyn for the first time and I hope she plays this song! I used to listen to her first album on cassette over and over again and this was my favorite!

Clearly a great song by a wonderful singer/songwriter.

The lyrics of this song are pure genius, IMHO. I'm loving this live version...
So willing and enthusiastic; embracing the 'bringing it.' Hat's off to THE Ricki Lee Jones!
Raw American talent. Love these tunes with Dylan, Mitchell and Armatrading getting left behind with her perfection on this album. Love her voice with a touch of Carol Brunett and other legendary singers mixed in to create this Genuis.
