Moist Critical / Cr1TiKaL / penguinz0 / charlie challenged Mario 64 Speedrunners (and speedruners) to completely break a random game, Elder Scrolls Redguard. Top speedruner pros grind out a new speedrun game in order to get the big money prize. This action packed the history of speedrun story is one worth telling! With the top Elder Scrolls Redguard World Record Speedruns getting a $10,000 prize, speedrunners across the world attempted the challenge, but only few survived.
I feel so sad for the one guy that ran the game and made the whole guide for all of it to get invalidated in a single day 😢
I think he would be glad the game he cares for so much finally got some proper attention
@@VictorMunaro8000 this right here. GTA SA.
I find it really interesting that there was actually someone active in one of these games Moist chooses for the challenge. Think the guy enjoyed all the attention his game was getting and he gave everyone a head start with his previous work.
I knew most of it would become invalid, I just didn't think it'd happen in like, 8 hours. But I had a lot of fun watching streamers use my guide to find/use the new glitches live :)
@@Solitaan Legend
Near the end I was hoping the twist would be Solitaan suddenly coming in to take back his record after seeing the new skips.
Unfortunately the competition came at a time I had very little free time. Maybe sometime I'll take the record back...
@@Solitaan Glad to hear it! Thanks for pioneering it when nobody else would.
@@Solitaan legend
The final day tie was actually ridiculous. I couldn't believe it when I saw it, but it was retimed, and retimed again, and retimed again... nutty way to finish the challenge.
Despite the screenshots of me shitting on the game endlessly in the beginning of the video, I still did enjoy this challenge a lot because of the other runners. It definitely had a better feeling of community than the other challenges, particularly in glitch finding (mods did a great job setting up the speedtech forum in the Discord). It was sick meeting a bunch of other speedrunners from different genres of games as well as competing with the same runners from previous challenges. It was also great that a lot of people were capable of getting world record until the very end, giving some much needed exposure to some insanely talented speedrunners on Twitch.
This challenge was unbelievably hellish, but was still an incredibly unique experience. Glad to see the recap, Simply!
Love your content Xem 😁
I’m really happy you’ve decided to make yourself the historian for these short term challenge competitions. The couple videos you’ve made have been very enjoyable
You should make this a series!
I mean charlie probably did this series to make a video just like this, as hes done for the last 2. this guy is just doing it to beat him to it for views lmao... im almost positive charlie also mentions people who do this shit in one of his videos
Really awesome to see you make a video about this challenge. I met so many awesome people from many different communities while competing in it. It was a crazy 2 weeks!
Loved being a part of this moist challenge and getting to meet all of these incredible runners. Awesome video simply
One guy found a skip, the other a glitch. So the money should go to the skip. It feels unfair but also if you give it just a little thought its pretty clear cut.
Exactly, otherwise all skips that use clipping, should be payed to the guy that did the very first clip in the history of clips!
@@samandmax42 I mean that's what happened in the exodus challenge the guy who figured out momentum storage got the prize not the guy who found chapter 13 skip because it used momentum storage the rules are not good on the skip find bounty
Why didn't Moist ever make a video on this, explaining who won like he did with the other 2 games?
I was positively surprised that the ‘drama’ that was hinted at several times was not in fact about any of the runners that ended up winning.
Thank you for making one of these breakdown videos, i’m not in the speedrunning community but i love watching these breakdown videos, i don’t think Charlie made one for this game (that i could find) like he did in the past but i’m glad someone did, thank you dude!
I love this shit. Please continue to cover these Charlie bounties.
The fact this game has a ledge grab mechanic for its time is kinda impressive
I mean, it came on the tails of two games that had full-on wall-climbing (and yes, you could start wall climbing from a fall if you collided with a wall, so you could technically ledge grab).
What Redguard did that was impressive was more the open world, the third person, and the platforming that the shift to action-adventure brought. Also, fully-voiced important dialogue and SO MANY NPCs to talk to with SO MANY topics.
By removing climbing/ledge grabs for Morrowind that was kind of a step backward.
There are three constants in the universe:
Death, taxes, and crane skips
This is how you content.
Im totally here for you becomming the cokentator / explainer for a bunch of community events.
Coke intaker... XD thanks phone.
@@Sugar3Glider uhhh...just edit the post?
@@nukewurld but I don't want to edit the post. I want to giggle at the cokenator.
Close and tight ending is my favorite kind.
Maybe just split the money between major glitches finders?
Simply is a very handsome man
Loving these challenges, and your videos that summarize them. Keep it up! thanks!
12:06 Do you give all the credit to the guitar maker or the guitar player? Does the person who invented the microphone deserve as much credit as Freddie Mercury?
Wow that ending where they slow roast Bobtoad for his split for bridges and then he glitches through the bridge was fantastic.
"over a decade, i have not witnessed such an incredible find"
barrier skip in windwaker!
Wonder if people will still bitch saying you should get your own content. This was nice.
Thank you for making these videos, they are amazing. I hope to see more if these challenges continue in the feature. ❤️
I love these videos when you break down the speedrun challenges. Great job 👏
The guy who invented glass or harnessed electricity didn’t, invent the lightbulb.
The guy who discovered Palace skip should get the 1k
12:53 Skips all game content, plays in a way to requires epileptic seizures warnings, "ThIS GaMe Issss Soooo BaWd MaNNnnn".
To answer the $1000 fastest skip question, at least in my head, you don’t give credit to the person who makes an artists tools when they make a masterpiece, you give credit to the artist. You don’t give credit to the people who made the transportation or tools when someone discovers a new animal or new plant, you give credit to the person who found the animal or plant. So personally the bounty should go to the person who found Palace Skip, not the person who found NPC Door Skip
I'm really enjoying these, it's basically if Summoning Salt went for a more personable approach. Also loved seeing a highlight on the people behind the skip discoveries.
Your ever changing shirts are JUUUUST similar enough to make me think I was losing my mind for like half the video
0:10 I knew from just seeing the thumbnail and I haven't even played the game. Guess I'm just old. Fuck.
Thanks for the recap simply, you're the GOAT
The only skip I can think of that's a huge time chunk like palace skip was a few years back when they found Barrier Skip in TLoZ: Wind Waker
I think the two people that found the two parts of the glitch should share the money with the two glitch hunters deciding between themselves how to split it.
No. The $1,000 goes to the runner who finds the biggest time save, not the runner who finds the strat that makes the biggest time save possible. I guess it depends on the *exact* wording of who gets the money.
@@johnm1008 that's dumb
@@Ali-rg8uk How is that dumb? Should the person who discovered the BLJ in sm64 be credited with anything involving a blj?
They should just give both of them 1000$.
@@killerbowser7046 reading comprehension isn't for everyone and apparently Ali is having trouble understanding. If the way Simply said it is correct, the only person who should get *any* money is the person who found the timesave and not the person that found that strat that makes the timesave possible
Thanks simply very cool
Edit well explained and fun video, one of my favourites
asking for peoples opinions on how money should be split was the best bait for comment analytics. how does your neck support that brain
I loved the game so much, but never got to play it. I got shouted at by some streamers of saying the game looked fun.
i say let the finder of door skip and the finder of palace skip split the money 500 each. seems fair to me.
I feel like the runner that actually found the time save should get the $1,000 and not the one that found the trick that made the time save possible. I guess it depends on the *exact* wording of who gets the prize. Maybe they split it.
My thoughts exactly. I think in the future charlie should consider a prize for "most important glitch" and "biggest timeskip"
I really enjoyed the video, Hope to see more to come especially from a moderator's viewpoint

@@artemis64 cool! Glad you guys did good practice!
Split the prize 25 to the one who discovered the technique and 75 to the one that found the best usage for it
Pretty sure Charlie said the one who finds the biggest time skip gets the award. Doesn't matter who finds the mechanics that make it work if they never found the skip location
honestly your breakdown of these has been better than the official moist ones
great story and explainations of all the finds
2:27 So original hardware might actually be faster then! I was wondering if it could be the whole challenge period. The game is really weird, i tried getting it running on 86box a while back. Its original installer is a win98 program but the game runs under DOS. The games system requirements for the time where also top of the line GPUs which most people didn't have. It would be like having min specs be a 4090 today.
yes, the game runs so much better on original hardware
Even when Simply's not participating he still can't help but talk about bounties AINTNOWAY
I think this is the first game I've heard of prior to the challenge.
I've never seen the gameplay, though. Mostly cause our copy had a GIANT spinning logo taking up the entire screen.
Love the recap videos very guuuuut
Now let's wait for summonig salts style video of Charlie
7:06, I didn't find this trick, somebody else actually brought it to attention; I believe his name was Lathil
i think if a tie happens in a challenge like this whoever got the run first should win the higher prize. That’s how it is in a lot of games where tying is more likely (for instance games like golden eye that officially time by the second and have like 20 runners tied for 1st place on a level). Whoever got the tied wr first is the wr holder and everybody else is tied with the wr.
I agree with that. If unity_b wanted to split it then fine but it was their world record to share.
Now, the place where the prize money ACTUALLY should be split is the time-saving one. The exploit finder and the path finder should get half.
But for the final prize, unity_b was first.
i would agree if there wasnt a finite time limit. in this case, it was get the best time within these 2 weeks or w/e.
Nah, that really doesn't make sense. There was a time limit to get a time by, not whoever gets a time first wins.
@@ca6681 it wasn’t get “this time by then end of the time limit” its the “best time by the timelimit” and in every other speedrun game, ties are broken by whoever got the time first. Just bc this speed run challenge is on a time limit i dont see why that would change the status quo. I think theres a value in getting the best time before somebody else did.
not going to lose sleep over this or anything. Just my opinion
@@noThankyou-g5c *gestures wildly at EVERY GOLDENEYE LEADERBOARD* My thoughts exactly. Was it established that the event split the prize money or that no.1 and no.2 decided to split it evenly?
There is a crane skip in every challenge. What the hell is happening?
The person who found the skip takes the bag not the person who found the bug, never tell others your secrets if you wanna win.
I think the crowbar skip is hilarious. Literally nothing special, just do what you'd do IRL. Go through the hole. Also, 100% give the money to the guy who found the Palace Skip. Just because you use an existing glitch to skip something, doesn't mean the originator of the glitch gets the prize. That's actually kind of ridiculous. It's not like the guy is taking credit for the glitch. Imagine if someone simply ledge grabbed something to save the same amount of time, would the person who originally found that ledge grabbing worked on anything be awarded but the guy who found the skip was the only one who realized that particular ledge would create that massive time save? If someone made an engine using water rather than combustion, should the combustion engine creator be credited because his idea was used as the base? You get my point.
Palace Skip money goes to Ontrigger. 100%. Why? Same reason Albert Michelson won the Nobel prize, not Jean Foucault. While Michelson used Foucault's methods, it was Michelson's work that developed his precise instrumentation, not Foucault's. Ontrigger deserves the money because he similarly used another's work to develop the time save. We don't give the money to Ontrigger's GPU manufacturer either, even though he couldn't have done this without their work.
7:03 That's funny! 😆
I think its pretty simple that Ontrigger was the first person to find the exact place to clip in order to save that much time. While he may not have discovered the technique, he was the first to execute it effectively.
1998 is old, sure it is... Wait a sec 1998 is 25 years ago, 25 isn't a lot is it? *Calculations* So 25 is 1/4 century which is less than half so I'm not old, yet.
bruh, my pentium II runs redguard just fine and cost me 2 dollars. There is no barrier to entry with this one. People just default to emulation on modern hardware. These hardware/emulation problems were 100% avoidable. With the amount of games that have serious issues or don't work at all with modern hardware u would think more people would keep an old pc rockin around.
Whoever found palace skip won that 1000$
Saying that the one who found the glitch deserves part of the prize money for biggest time save is like saying the inventor of the wheel deserves a part of F1 prize money. He discovered a glitch, great - didn't find where to use it optimally - too bad
XD how is it confusing. You give the money to the person that created the highest time save???? What is confusing about that. Why would you give it to someone that has only contributed to it. That's like saying the person who invented the light bulb doesn't deserve credit, because someone invented the tungsten wire used inside of it.
When you go to the bakery and buy a cake and it’s the best cake you’ve ever had in your life who do give props to? The baker obviously. And as important as good ingredients are, it is not the farmer that grows the wheat, or tends the chickens, nor the cows that make the butter, nor the factory that produces the sugar, that bakes a delicious cake. They are ingredients in a whole finished product. So while we all appreciate the man who finds the clipping glitch, and the man who finds the sword dash glitch, it is ultimately the man who puts the skills together to clip through the right door to save the time that gets sole credit. That is my opinion anyway.
I'm love seeing those challenge videos! Where does Moist Critical usually announce them? I searched on his Twitter and his YT channel and couldn't find anything...
The video title was "I'm late" on penguinz channel. L title. U can't find it if u search "penguinz 10k challenge" or something.
I dont wanna ge that guy simply, but wouldn't barrier skip in wind waker save as much time as palace skip?
150k cycles is ridiculous you shouldnt be allowed to play on anything that costs more than two potato's and a pork chop.
why does this look like gothic 1? You can also ledge grab everything in that one. Also same animations it seems like
250 dollars is not much for a cpu, why would people even game if their cpu is 30 years old
About splitting the money, i think that if there is a problem understanding who is supposed to have the money, they should go to buy weed, and everyone involved gets to have a nice sesh
If there's a ledge you have somthing 2 grab... what butiful game design
I would love to see something like this with Winback on N64 (or the ps2 version), I believe that game has the potential to have amazing glitches and runs
Ayo Simply the best speed runner no cap

Yeppppp, I'm having a stroke
i like how he simply took moist's idea (ahahhhaahahahah get it? cuz like simply and like simply)
Just posting to credit the song at 14:09 to amazing electronic group Anamanaguchi.
Personally While I don’t have a good answer for who gets the money this time (tho tbh I think penguinz0 has enough money that he can stomach giving out 1k each, but that’s just my salty 9-5 ass talking), I think next time he should split it into “routing” and “glitch” awards.
I think by technicality discovering the clipping technique was the biggest time save, but I think the routing is more deserving of the award. I think in this case it comes out as right either way.
the issue with "routing" being an award is how do you define it? like for this game, the route was basically determined as soon as this glitch was found. all other level routing was basically just glitches as well..
@@artemis64 knowing the glitch isn’t routing, finding where to use it is. The route wasn’t defined until someone defined it. There is a clear cut person who said “this glitch should be used here” and in any case where the usage is SO obvious that the route is self defined by the glitch inherently, then the glitch finder would be credited with both.
@@totalphantasm ok i get what you're saying, i just dont feel like separating "routing" and "glitches" makes that much sense, since when it comes to the end, it gets hard to determine what the best route is. in this case, there's been lots of talk on splitting the prize a few different ways, but all route/glitch/ whatever prizes are always inherently fucked
@@artemis64 I think in most cases when you’re dealing with games like the ones penguinz0 does for these tournaments, there is going to be one “route” change that is demonstrably better than the others. It won’t be anything like the top 2 routes are like, “well this one saves 30 seconds but no one used it because it was too hard and it wasn’t in the record run” vs “this one saved only 15 seconds but everyone used it” I would bet money that every time it’s going to be “this route decision cut the run in half”. It’s really not that hard to estimate time saves
