    Gen 9 player here! Commenting on Volc's potential brokenness and it's defensive uses in the meta. It's not just it's capability to change type and use hidden power 2.0 in Tera Blast (For utilizing Tera Blast, it goes Tera Ground to smack Toxapex, Clodsire and Skeledirge as we'll as block Twave from something like Rotom and Fairy to handle Baxcalibur, Roaring Moon and Dragonite as well as blocking phazing attempts from Garchomp's Dragon Tail. Tera Grass and Tera Bug are also common, the former for boosting Giga Drain and flipping the script on waters and the latter to give it a truly nuclear bug buzz), but also the fact a lot of its checks are missing. There's no bulky Zapdos, no Heatran, no AV Slowking Galar, no SpDef Lando, Blissey has lost Toxic meaning it's set up fodder, Ttar isn't even good in OU etc. A huge boost to it is the reduced distribution of Knock Off, the most prominent mons with knock are Great Tusk, Meowscarada and Iron Treads, all of which lose to Volc. That means it pretty much is never bothered by rocks due to boots staying, giving it frankly incredible longevity if paired with Morning Sun (even without it, Giga Drain and it's natural special bulk helps a ton). That means it can attempt QD sweeps MULTIPLE times throughout the game with a lot less team support than in previous gens. As for it's defensive uses, it's not really a defensive mon, more so a sweeper with defensive utility. One of the premier offensive pokemon is Iron Valiant, and Volc completely walls that aren't Specs with Psyshock. Turning one of the best offensive mons into setup fodder is frankly bonkers utility for a mon that was so one dimensional before.

    I still remember when we used bulky volcarona with z bug to hard counter kartana (at the time z giga impact wasn't that common) and soft check + fish for a burn Mega mawile (yes we really were desperate at that time). Volcarona is the kind of pokemon at very spontanious moments of every OU meta since gen 5 makes no sense whatsoever and everyone wants to ban it until he loses its niche and become again the hard quiver dance machine.

    Super late to the party here, but fellow Gen 9 and previous Gen 5 player. (I've played all gens except 7 and 8.)
    Part of the reason behind the rallied cry of Volcarona being broken is actually Heavy-Duty Boots. This allows Volcarona to come in against any kind of hazards and ignore them completely. This turns the 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, the chip from Spikes, poison from TSpikes and speed loss from Sticky Web into non-factors. Most commonly, Volcs in this generation run physically defensive sets to patch up its physically defensive weakness, as well as trying to make much better use of Flame Body to punish the opponents.
    Then you have to factor in Terastalization -- The most common Volc Teras are Grass, Ground, Water, and Fairy. Grass covers your ass against Waters and turns your other weaknesses (barring Flying) into neutralities while also pumping up Giga Drain into a third STAB. Ground blocks Twave attempts and alongside Water allow you to absolutely dumpster the best check to Volcarona, Skeledirge. Fairy is there to blast Dragons, even though you generally don't need to.
    If you don't have an Unaware Pokemon, or something tanky enough to deal with it, Volcarona can run train through numerous teams at the drop of a hat. Offensive variants still exist, but physically bulky sets are the most common to see. You can try to Haze/Clear Smog it, but that's a lot more difficult to pull off than one thinks.
    Volcarona is definitely teetering on the edge of being broken, IMO, but I feel it has more of an effect of "You lose in the team builder for Volcarona" than in-game presence. You ALWAYS have to keep it in mind, or get blasted by it immediately.

  • @Joshuaskehan-mk8cj
    @Joshuaskehan-mk8cj Год назад +1

    Volc in gen 9 reminds me of kyurem in gen 8 but less broken. In gen 8 you always had to scout out what set kyurem was running, you could switch blissey in expecting specs but then be against sub DD never melt ice kyurem, it boosts to +6 and you lose, or you switch in balloon heatran expecting earthpower, get subed on and your magma storms get pp stalled until kyurem is behind a sub, breaks your balloon and continues to destroy your team. It was so hard to counter kyurem as you might have a specs counter but not a sub roost special one or a sub DD one or even scarf or banded kyurem that people started to run late gen 8.
    The same can be said for volc, it can be physically defensive U-turn willo, it can be tera grass bulky, tera fairy offensive and so on. You never know what set volc is going to be running and now with terastilisation aka the 10 times better hidden power, you can get steam rolled thinking it's one type of Volvo and it turning out to be another. Def Volc with tera grass is crazy, you're boosting your speed, spdef and spA and if a physical attacker tries coming in, it can get burn while they giga drain or morning sun away the damage. The introduction of heavy duty boots has sky rocketed volcs viability and while I think it's not as broken as kyurem in gen 8, I definitely think it's A tier or S tier in ou gen 9 as of right now. The ability to run a small bit of speed, hp and defense and set up while recovering damage is crazy. Unaware clod definitely helps but then they tera ground or water and snack you hard, if they have spikes and stealth rocks up or get chip on clod early game then it's over.
    Volc has a great ability, a good typing and now with terastilisation it's unpredictable, a great movepool, a great setup move and two forms of recovery. Has all the potential of staying a top tier Mon in ou all this gen.
    Another note: volc being able to tera grass before rocks are put up is huge as now you can run covert cloak, leftovers, big root etc. And not worry about stealth rocks. Also shed tail teams with screens and volc are crazy. Hard to pull off but if you're not prepared with a phasing Mon or taunt, can ruin your day.

    I would be so pissed if they ban Volc she is my favorite, I know that's not competitive but rooting for a fire bug type has been the best. She is on like 85% of all teams I make, nothing else fills the roll of crazy set up sweeper and I think the negatives of running Volc are obvious. So in conclusion smogon loves stall 💔

    Volcarona also has the incredible trait of DESTROYING psychic spam. All three of Alakazam, Reuniclus and Cresselia get demolished by Bug Buzz after a boost. Alakazam with focus sash can stop Volcarona, once, but then it’s vulnerable to all of Volcarona teammates. And that isn’t even a good example because Alakazam wants to run life orb and it gets completely invalidated by Volcarona if it does. Volcarona is also commonly paired with other set up sweepers like SD Garchomp, DD Dragonite, and nasty plot Thundurus just to name a few. So Volcarona may not offer much defensively but it offers a ton offensively.

  • @Skyace13

    I don’t know enough about BW tier but from other gens getting volc in to do it’s thing isn’t that simple. I also rarely see it be able to get that many QD under its belt. This might just be that metas have become quicker paced. It does seem like Gen 5 doesn’t have a ton of options to deal with it though. Idk I could never go back and get in to Gen 5 because weather wars are too centralizing for me. To me Gen 5’s “gimmick” is perma-weather and I’m just not a fan.
