  • Despite my resentment for the term, there is no doubt that 'normie' is becoming an everyday word within the film community. So let's examine what a normie currently is or viewed as, then let's see if we think that's fair or not. Keep Watching Movies!

    When I was 14 discovering movies like Reservoir Dogs, Taxi Driver, and No Country for Old Men, I thought I'd found the farthest recesses of cinema. A bit later I came to find out all of these were see as "normie" or "film bro" films. Over time my tastes broadened and I picked up foreign favorites like La Haine, Chungking Express, and Breathless. Once again, I thought I'd found the true hidden gems. Imagine my surprise when I start using Letterboxd and discover that these too are considered "normie" picks by many. Just last week I watched Daisies and Tetsuo: The Iron Man. It took me years of exploration to discover these but now I'm certain there's someone out there who considers these to be "normie." Like many of the comments have said, the word is simply too subjective to define. Personally, I prefer not to use it because I consider everyone's starting and end point to be valid. Not everyone has to start watching Czech New Wave because I've seen just how much good stuff is out there on the tip of the iceberg and it's a comfortable spot to anchor the ship.

      I mean, yes. The entire point of the video is to point out how oddly defined the word is and how frivolously it's used and weaponized to offend people or look down on people. It was a fun little experiment to clearly define the word and destigmatize it so it could be used in a more positive sense. Of course I know this video wouldn't achieve that on a grand scale, but it's fun to fictionalise regardless. Like I said many times in the video, I believe every cinema viewing experience is valid. Films considered "normie films" are well known for a reason, they're great films. They're some of my favourite films so I don't let the word shake me none. But thank you for comment, I definitely think you have a point. Thanks for watching!

    One of my favorite ways to explore is to go to film festivals. I think most people don't get excited to see a movie that they've never heard of before, so I find being almost forced to go see one with your friends and an open mind is easier to do. Only problems you have to find one.

    • @kritpickproductions
      @kritpickproductions  Год назад +3

      It's a good point. I'm the complete opposite, being honest. I love just going to the movies and buying a ticket for anything. Trying my best to avoid trailers, genre clues and whatnot. But I get that's an issue for a lot of people, my girlfriend has to know everything about a movie to decide if she wants to see it and most times it's a no. So you're absolutely correct, in my opinion.

  • @Nickelicious7

    Two key things that I try to always remember when so called “normie” films are being discussed:
    1. Everybody starts out as a normie at some point
    2. Not everybody feels as strong a desire to search for “depth” and “meaning” in art/content and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
    All that “normie” gatekeeping does is continue to make people write off all artists and film/music:
    /art enthusiasts as pretentious and fake as well as alienate those who might actually want to start digging for those deeper works.

    • @mycaleb8

    I enjoy the fact that film enthusiasts (the person who made this video included), think of watching movies as a progressive journey, as if they are getting better at watching movies as an art and like they are creating something. Watching films is not like painting or playing an instrument, the only outcome of "deepening your film knowledge" are obnoxious conversations. Most people just want to enjoy a movie regardless of what other people think of it.

    • @NitroLemons
      @NitroLemons 8 месяцев назад

      I see your point, but I don't think it's wrong to think about exploring a medium as a journey. It takes no skill to sit and watch a movie, but seeking out a variety of different works does take time and effort. It takes no skill to look at a painting and yet I would much rather talk about paintings with someone that's seen a lot of paintings than with someone who's only seen the Mona Lisa. Right? I'm sorry you find conversations about film obnoxious, don't really know what to tell you. I really enjoy talking about movies with people, and the more of them I've seen then the more likely it is that we've seen something we both really enjoyed and can talk about. Not to mention the fact that many people do explore film to take inspiration for their own projects, be it camera work, editing, whatever. If that's your goal then it makes sense to look at a variety of different eras and genres.

    For me personally, when a new movie comes out, I try my best to not hear others opinions on the movie until I've seen it. I usually try to see movies on opening day for this reason. No one can take my first take away from me. If a movie resonates with audiences and I also loved it, I know it's my own taste and not the public opinion swaying me. Equally, if I like a movie people don't, that's fine too. I also think movies can fester with someone over time. There are many films I didn't like on first viewing that grew on me with age, even some of them classics. As long as you know your feelings are based on yourself and not others, you're fine

    Now if we translate a "film normie" to the music industry, the music normies would be the ones listening to Ed Sheeran, Justin Beiber, Post Malone, etc. But I don't picture The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather as equal in that way. The MCU, and other cash grabs do come off as pop music. Repetitive, lazily written, but with popular characters (artists). I think the "Normie Films" would translate to music as classic great songs that are full of flavor, character, and timeless. Such as songs like Hotel California, Wish You Were Here, and Stairway to Heaven. Sure, they are basic "normie" songs that most people enjoy, but there is art to them, they were groundbreaking at the time, and they aren't bad. So why shame people for enjoying them?

    • @kritpickproductions
      @kritpickproductions  Год назад

      There is no shaming, I said multiple times that their experience is just as valid as any other and it is totally okay to experience film in this way

    • @DiamorphineDeath
      @DiamorphineDeath Год назад

      Because what keeps value in the field of art? How does one separate objective from subjective, and what keeps everything from the relativistic way it is currently? Shame does dude. It keeps shit from being called poetry, and it should keep quality well above the rest. The inversion currently holds mediocrity as if it’s tantamount to sainthood, while actual quality then suffers without any outlet to either release, produce, or be created. Craig Zehler comes to mind as a talented film maker, whose topics and subjects of his films i enjoy, but has a hell of a time getting his films made. His subject matter is shamed, and yet the MCU, the publishing industry, televesion, all of these things do not get shamed for their utter mediocrity. Roger Scruton said back in the day that the only true sin of modernity, is to criticize another’s tastes. And why is that? Maybe the shame is more needed than you think my friend.

  • @ricopena2053
    @ricopena2053 Год назад

    Movies are subjective and people like what they like. Some like stunts, some like creature effects, some like dialogue heavy stories, etc. Movies are even connected to people’s memories. A lot of people like a classic because it is the first movie they saw in theaters. Or a certain romance might connect with someone because it’s the movie they saw with their lifelong partner.
    For example, which movie is better: Halloween or Toy Story? Those are two movies that evoke two different feelings in their viewers.
    I like CineFix’s top movie list because it takes a lot of these categories into consideration.

    Honestly I love watching movies everyone’s seen because it shows why they care. Wanting to know what everyone is talking about is natural. So yeah, I mean I kinda am a film normie. A casual viewer. Sometimes movies I watch are rarer. But not because they’re rarer, just because they catch my eye.

    7:28 "Accessibility is the goal of art"
    I disagree with this idea. While that may be the goal of some artists when they create art, that is definitely not the point of all art. The issue with this mentality is that it assumes the movies that connect with the most people are somehow better than those that only connect with a few. It's always interesting to see when a movie becomes a massive cultural force because it has universal themes that everyone connects with, but that doesn't mean it will be as impactful to each of those people. I'm sure everyone has movies that they enjoy much more than the average person would because they have a personality or lived experience that makes them it uniquely resonant. The problem with only looking at the most popular/successful movies is that it means you're never exposed to movies that might hit you just as hard, even if they're more niche. It's important to have curiosity about movies (and about art in general) and not write off movies just because they didn't appeal to the majority of people. Exploring lesser known movies is a great way to think about what makes them special to YOU.

    For me a film normie is a lot different from a film 'bro' in that, while a film bro watches cult classics and is an annoying charcter and all that stuff, a film normie is someone not very much into film, someone who watches both good and mediocre movies as long as they are popular, so take Jumanji or Marvel movies, funny movies or maybe even good movies like the matrix or forrest gump. Very surface level and unintressted in the movie critic scene in general and just watches movies for the entertainment.

    The normie term to me, is someone who is usually a midwit, finding something which is not particularly powerful, meaningful, or is just generally still popular, and then acting as if they are better and well pretentious acting because of it. In terms of “ohhhh you wouldn’t understand this, it’s deep,” about a marvel film, or some other nonsense. So the sting that the term conveys is just that, it’s meant to demean as it’s a descriptor for being that think they’re smarter than they really are; i.e, a midwit. And it’s not just that, it’s the fact that they lack the self awareness to realize it, and then proceed to try and hold this over others.
