You can get the new Aputure 150 cm Sofbox for better soft results. Also check the new Aputure 120 cm octabox

as you can see, you get with book light much more light to the BG, not the same

do you know where the name "BOOK" light comes from? I'm asking b/c I don't know how or why its named.
I can only assume because it has book shape lighting, bouncing, in half book open shaped?

Came back to watch this video because it's so helpful. I've been thinking about this a lot and I'd like to make one too. V Flat World version really don't sound that much better for the price jump. Did your 1200d come in yet? I want the 600d

Spend some money and get a 6x6 magic cloth wag flag, pack up really small and unrolls off one C stand very easily. I love magic cloth because anything you put into it looks beautiful on the other side, no need to make it a book light or “double break” it with another layer of diff, just fill up your magic cloth with light and go

I didn’t notice the aspect ratio difference because I was viewing this video from an iPad, which usually have black top and bottom boarders anyways. Your composition was spot on probably helped in making this seamless anyways 😉 Is the Aputure China ball you’ve got the new 90 version or the previous smaller version?

@@SoundItOutFilms oh, I’m pleasantly surprised on the size of the China ball. Looks already quite big in the video which is why I asked. I have a good feeling that the newer larger China ball would produce a more pleasant light. Want to try it out as soon as one is available in the UK

Mainly still shooter here but also more and more video (I've been using the C70 and that is how I found your channel). Here in the studio we probably have 12 w/b V-flat books and several single sheets. I used to use two books to make basically a large book. I'd put a black single piece of foam core on the top to act as a roof and a silk across the front and two diffused Profoto heads aiming into the book. It produces a very soft and even light. Now I tend to go with diffused umbrellas through a silk since it gives just the slightest more oomph to the light. When I have been shooting video I use a big lantern with a 5x5 diffusion panel between the set and the light and that also gives a very beautiful and forgiving light. When I want a "sunlight" look I do the reverse and make a box with black facing inward and place a mirror on a stand inside the box and aim a light at the mirror. The black foam core eliminates double shadowing on the set. You might just try clipping some additional diffusion to your dome/softbox to increase the spread and eliminate the highlight.

Noticed the aspect ratio off the jump (watching through desktop web browser) but didn't distract any. Your content is always well polished so IMO it didn't hurt, or in this case help, but I like seeing it being used. And thanks for the vids!

The aspect ratio is definitely interesting for modern phones using the entire width.

2:35:1 looked good on my end. I have an Ultrawide monitor, so I notice content like that cause it just fills near edge to edge for me. I dig it.
I try to plan a couple narrative shoots with wider aspects every so often, but time constraints usually kill that idea. Good luck with your doc!
Also, it is so nice to watch a movie on an ultrawide. Little to no bars. *chefs kiss*

This is awesome, I used that exact setup as my workhorse on a feature years ago. The biggest one was two 12ft griffs with an 18K bouncing into each diffused through a 20ft light grid cloth to light a tennis court set. My Key Grip called it a Jack In The Box.

Double diffusing the mini gives a comparable result to a single diffused light dome.

YES the aspect ratio looks fab, I didn't notice - which is a sign that it works - eg how you've composed the shots etc. Hey I'd love to see a video on your approach to tripods / fluid heads / mono pods - eg old fashioned stabilizers - non electronic ! Keep up the great work Sir. MK.

    I like the aspect ratio..
Like JNOTinNYC, I found you when I purchased my c70 and wanted to see some comprehensive exposure testing.. and stayed for everything else.
I have used homemade book lights and diffusers more than a few times in the last many years, but really haven't for a while now.. gonna have to experiment with them again . .

It'd be nice to be able to add an extra internal baffle on the light dome II, it they could build them that way of course. maybe a light dome III request

I love the book light setup, it's so ingenious. Inspired!

  • @ben_grubb
    @ben_grubb 2 года назад

Interesting comparison. I personally liked the Light Dome II version most of all from the examples. Like you said, the separation from the background is more pleasing to me, and I tend to favour quite contrast-y lighting. The book light is nice on the skin for sure, but the overall image looked a bit too flat. Again, just personal taste on a very specific situation.
I’m tempted by the Lantern as well. I could see that being a very useful tool. A 1200D would be lovely too but I think it might be a bit much for me practically.

This is great! Have you tried just bouncing directly off of bead-board? I really like that look. You can cut a 4x4 sheet and it gives a similar look to the v-flat without loosing as much light.
