    Great stuff! When my pup isn't responding I have learned from Beckman to say out loud "WE WILL DO THIS ALL DAY LONG." Sometimes I 'backtrack' over the same portion of sidewalk four and five times and I never make it around the block- and that's okay. By the time we are done he is 'loose leash' and attentive to me.

      @@hostwithchloe According to Beckman, your dog is entering “adolescence” stage of craziness. Just be patient and stick to the program of Beckman’s teachings. A big game changer for me with my Rottie was using a gentle leader. They are less then $20. I followed the directions that came with the leader how to introduce your dog to it. Once she was used to it, I started walking her with it. What I did since my dog is big, I also hooked her leash to both the gentle leader ring and her collar ring (I learned that watching a Cesar Milan video) and it worked like a charm. Wishing you the best of luck! The key is being patient and consistent. I’m far from an owner like Beckman but I’m a lot better bc of his trainings.

    I wish more than anything that I wasn’t so damn soft when my dog was younger. “Positive only” training tricked me into never really giving my dog a stern NO, and so everything was taking as a joke, it seems, for my dog. Don't be so hard on yourself. It is never too late to change your training method. I adopted a 7-year old husky (he had basic training and was well behaved). Recall, walking on a leash wasn't great and he wasn't socialised very much. 6 months later and with the help of Joel's video he is walking off-leash and getting along with all the dogs at the dog park.
      You can be disciplined and positive. If you ask for a sit, follow through when they sit. When they do sit, be positive and reinforce it with praise or treat. If you ask for sit and they lay down, do not praise or acknowledge, keep going until they are sitting. You can do it :)

    First off want to say, thank you! I've been watching positive reinforcements videos for 3 months to prepare
    me for a puppy. They didn't help with a damn thing. It was like a parent who coddled her kid, their end result will always be a spoiled brat.
    I watched your videos for a day(started yesterday) and it's like I've had my puppy (5 month old Border Collie x Great Pyrenees so she will get big) for a year of training when I've only had her for a month.
    Everything you taught has resonated with me and the type of discipline I want my puppy to have(she will be a reflection of me, so she can have her puppy fun, but she needs to be calm and assertive as an end result.)
    I have some questions for anyone who reads these comments if they're able to answer of even if you are able to do a video on them.
    1.) After she meets someone(she either sits or lays doen) the whole walk afterwards she tries to jump at every other person. How do I stop this?
    2.) She gets the zoomies when we're about to get close to the house and starts running wild, how do I stop this as well.
    3.) She walks on my right side when she doesn't like a person or a dog instead of staying on my left and being confidant. Should I make her stay on my left or let her go to my right as a way to show her I'll protect her(I will protect her either way, but, it's big dogs who are trying to walk up to her who look aggressive/small dogs with attitude problems/people wearing masks and dark clothing that she steers away from) is it an age thing as well? She doesn't bark back at any of thr dogs, she just looks at them and walks away.

    • @TheCreatorMagic
      @TheCreatorMagic 3 года назад +3

      @@DougHinVA I understand all of that, but she is a puppy. I'll just be patient and understanding until around 7/8 months then I'll start putting my no-nonsense vibe on. She is a puppy, most of the things I listed are normal puppy behaviours(watched his previous videos) it would be different if she was 8 months+(the type of training this is for). I'm doing extremely above average though.

      I had to stop taking my dog there a long time ago. She loved it when she was younger, hit puberty, flipped a switch. She wasn't mine during her prime socialization period so I suspect she was a bit undersocialized, but it didn't help that I just...didn't know what to do. She's territorial of me to boot, so while she isn't always reactive, that can totally change if the other dog breaks one of her random rules about me, or doorways, or tight spaces... She's 8 now, so I just manage her exposure for the most part. I don't have a "Prince" nearby acting like a total angel to work her through this, and there's no guarantee she would hate Prince anyway. She's only medium horrible 😅

    Love this. My wife got a dog when I first met her and was an amateur dog owner, she bought a husky German shepherd mix. The dog was not bad just severely babied and aloud to do whatever it wanted and never got corrected because it was “mean” to do that. Then I began corrections and following these training videos and it was night and day difference. I feel as if you need to look at dogs as kids and you have to train them both what is right or wrong just with a different process and 9 times out of 10 the bad kid in school is never disiplined or corrected while the professional kid had strict but fair parents. That’s the key strict but fair.

    I like your style. I also like the fact that you know all dogs have their own personality (you need to be tougher on some than others). The 100% positive training group needs to learn that they are dealing with canines. I believe in positive reinforcement vocals (also treats when training) when my dog does acceptable behavior (that has been previously taught). I never hesitate to let my pooch have a correction, vocal and leash when he does something unacceptable. Again, they're canines responding to the alpha leader...they need and desire this leadership. I don't see any cruelty in what you're doing.

    • @samuelcousins7229
      @samuelcousins7229 Год назад

      Alpha theory has been disproven. This treats the surface level behavior but exasperates the underlying problem. Dogs associate. This dog is associating Prince with leash pops. This is surface level training which is worse than an aggressive dog because now the dog is still aggressive, but it hides it. That's dangerous.

The ùse of this, plus my strong command to heel at the same time, has set up a great behaved dog on leash and off, and made behavioural training in all other areas easy and productive. It also reinforces that in the pack order, their owners are alpha/top in the pack. It really works

    Hi there. I need advice. My husband and I consider coming to see you for this. Our 5yr German Shepherd has been aggressive recently (last 3 months) toward one dog only that I’ve been dog sitting. The other dog appears to be shy and non dominant. She has grabbed her by the throat and lunged at her. We will keep her on a muzzle to be around her, gate separating, she will refuse to engage if she is on the muzzle. Should I only keep her on a leash and muzzle when this dog is around? I have trusted her before and they can be alone no problem and at the flip of a switch she will attack her (seemingly unprovoked) blocking doorways so she can’t get in, staring at her with a stiff tail. She will respond to her name, loud claps, and come to us but will immediately go back to to wide eyed staring at this guest dog we have. Before the first attack, she loved to play with her, run around the grass, toys, etc. the other dog is visibly afraid of her now. I’m at a loss and I don’t want this continue with other dogs or be nervous of her being around other dogs. This video helped us, but she know for a FACT once that muzzle or leash comes off she will do whatever she wants. Positive reinforcement does not work with her.

    The knee-flip you use on the mastiff - what are you actually looking for in the correction? It's like you specifically wanted him to stop, turn, and look at you. Is that the difference between an aggression correction and a loose leash walking correction?

    • @pmlm1571
      @pmlm1571 3 года назад +1

      The knee flip may be part of the "snap him out of it" move. The leash snap plus the knee flip for such a big dog; where a leash snap is all it takes on a smaller dog to make an impression...

    Well this definitely made my Monday! Wow. Excellent video!
    Loved the corrections, touch, circle of trust...why do neuter dogs go after unneuter dogs? My dog is neutered. I've seen him more aggressive after I had him neutered he is 2 yrs old
    Great video 🐾🐕❤

    Where are you located? I need help and am willing to do anything to help my dog correct her behavior. I like your style. I want to make sure I do thr right thing when correcting her. Show goes after dogs, people and kids. To me and my husband she's protective and very clingy. BUT she is also a scared cat which is what I am assuming is the cause of her aggression

    Great demo on your technique. Maybe the most concise yet. I keep studying your videos and applying this to my rescue Cattle Dog. I am seeing quantifiable improvements. Hugely helpful to see a range of behavior. Mine started out acting more like the mastiff, and is now a bit more like the staffordshire terrier (when he’s at his worst). As such, my corrections have gotten less harsh over time.

    A good thing to keep an eye on is the "hard stare" I call it. The body is usually pretty stiff and the dog basically locks it's eyes on the other dog. Some dogs will go at another dog within milliseconds of the stare. The first dog did that a few times.

      This is how I can see a dog fight starting before it’s even begun. My pit bull used to do it. How do the owners not see it?
      I feel like I’m the only one at the dog park sometimes and everyone else is dreaming.

    We adopted a 3 year old rescue dog, a Golden Retriever. I am doing most of his ongoing training. He’s good on a leash and knows the commands and listens most of the time. When my husband goes out all bets are off. He doesn’t listen at all and today actually tried to bite me when I tried to get his leash on. (Which he usually LOVES). This is a huge concern. Do you have any videos or tips for me to try? I don’t want to use his crate as a punishment place. Thank you.

    Both these dogs are the same breeds as my two dogs, the first dog even looks exactly like mine. I'm working on reactivity with my dog, he is not aggressive but gets very excited when seeing other dogs. He is really strong but I'm still able to hold him back when he is on the lead, the thing that bothers me though is he doesn't seem to care if he chokes himself. What kind of lead and collar do you recommend for a situation like this?
    Love your videos, by the way, your training techniques are realistic and always to the point.

      @@roxannenicoleandrews if it's fitted correctly it's much safer than a flat collar or choke chain which give tons of pressure on the dogs trachea. A simple pop and get their attention to divert the activity you don't like. Try upstate dog academy videos. Tom is really great.

      @@roxannenicoleandrews I agree with them being safer than choke chains for sure, as well as other flat collars. They are designed to distribute pressure throughout the entire collar, And only when strained against by the dog. I have never once had to jerk or pull on the collar to get attention. As soon as they pull against it it does what it needs to do and they stop. If I try to use a regular collar or a harness on my female pit, she gets so worked up and strains so hard that she chokes herself and starts wheezing and gagging...

    Informative video. I have a Maltese that when I walk on a loose leash is behind me and follows. We're made a lot of strides since I adopted him. He will now come, sit, stay and even starting on rolling over but when inside he likes to gravitate to his crate and spends most of his time there. We do not secure the door but it has become his safe place. What is the best method to get him to walk next to me?

      Take him to a groomer. I just do the nails pretty much no matter what, I only stop if the dog is thrashing to the point where it will hurt itself.
      Usually they learn that struggling will not end the nail trimming session lol
      Depends on the dog, but I'd try that.

    A prong collar would work well in this situation. Such a large breed gets minimal communication(correction) through the flat collar....great video!

    I completely understand the need to a have stable dog like Prince there in order to teach and rehabilitate these aggressive cases you deal with, but do you ever worry about the constant exposure of your dogs to these aggressive dogs despite the fact that they're so stable? I suppose the answer may be that they trust you unconditionally and that you would never allow something to happen to them but but I'm obviously not sure if I'm correct in this assumption...I'm not asking this out of any criticism just out of pure curiosity i love your videos and have learnt a tremendous amount!
