  • In October of 2012, steam power returned to the Deschutes River Canyon in spectacular fashion as Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4449 took charge of the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation's "Deschutes Steam Special" excursion!
Over the next-to-last weekend before Halloween 2012, the big engine pulled a 12-car train, from Portland to Bend, Oregon and return via the scenic gorges of the Columbia and Deschutes Rivers.
Northwest Daylight Productions was there to capture both days of mainline steam action along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway's Columbia River and Oregon Trunk Subdivisions. With good weather and stunning scenery, the trips were a joy to witness! Also included is the history and current home and status of the locomotive and BNSF and UP freight traffic filmed along the right-away.

Sounds like #4449's original whistle has been removed and this terrible sounding whistle was installed. Who's idea was that and what was the purpose? Hard to believe the locomotive wasn't up to operating pressure. That terrible sound has to come from a whistle change.

Trust me, that whistle sounded a heck of a lot better when they installed it. Search up “SP 4449 NRHS Convention" and enjoy a couple good, sharp blasts of the whistle at around the 25-29 minute range in the video. Same whistle, but it hadn’t worn out yet, so it sounded absolutely golden. As for the purpose, it was installed because it was an authentic Daylight whistle, and putting it on the locomotive was the final step in returning her to her as-delivered state.

@@robertbrotherton1375 The whistle heard here's actually off of a Northern Pacific Challenger. It's just become so synonymous with the 4449 that people consider it the original whistle, when in reality, 4449's original whistle was very shamefully stolen back during it's time in Oaks Park.
Immediate edit: Plus, there's the non original whistle placement on the 4449. From what I've heard, the SP had it's whistles mounted within the casings somewhere. I dunno if they did it how the N&W did it or more toward the middle like how the NS steam crews had on 611 in the 80's.

@@NorthwestDaylight I recall taking the SP passenger train from SOCAL during the early '60s to Eugene. I also took Greyhound and Trailways bus service. Trailways, trying to increase ridership, at one time offered a BA (bus attendant as in FA, flight attendant) along with free sandwiches and cold beverages. No such luck on Greyhound or the train. But I've always had a place in my heart for Portland's Union Station (my first remembrance as a youngster) and the train.

They also use it to supplement electricity for the rest of the cars. It really bothers me to see a diesel in the mix, specially when it stands out like Amrak! What I would like to see instead is a F unit painted in Daylight colors in there. At least it would blend a little more. Then you have all the Amrak cars in there..... You might as well being pulling an Amtrak train......
