I totally get it. First, it only takes two motivated people to drive up the price (if legit).
Second, the rarity. Aside from the general stats (Pop 2, pack odds, etc.), everything about 1998 Topps was condition sensitive. All of it (Topps Base, Chrome Preview, and Chrome Preview Refractor) had mostly horrible centering. Topps Base was also bad on edges. A lot of Topps Chrome base had issues with rough edges. Looking through ebay, you'll notice that almost every graded 1998 Jordan Chrome had leniency on centering (i.e. 65/35 getting 9s).
I've always loved this card because your lay collector may mistakenly think you could pull it in a Topps Chrome box. Both the Chrome Preview and Refractor were inserts in Topps Paper Hobby boxes only. And it's beautiful dunk card late in his career.

All true but still sold 28x a psa 9 value which is illogical for a Jordan card which isn’t really a top 40-50 MJ card.

Man, the preview refractor psa 10 is a great card, but for that much you could fill up your plate with a heaping helping of many other MJ PSA 10's. I think that would give me more joy.

Not saying it is worth $168k, but when it is a Pop 2, it probably won't be available for sale anytime soon. So if you have deep pockets or trying to collect all PSA 10, strange things will happen. Still need someone to verify that it has been paid for.

Heritage is the king of auctions IMO...I would choose them over all these others auctions houses...As for the Preview Refractor... SUSPECT

Of all the Jordan cards that sold for over $100k or could sell for $100k+, I legit wouldn’t have ever thought this card would be one of them.

The 1994 skybox emotion was first game back. Jordan wore his shorts backwards. The emotion insert Card is the only card showing this. And nobody told him at halftime.😂

The 98 Preview Chrome MJ Refractor is a helluva card, one of those centered is impossible to find. The high sale is definitely due to the POP 2. I honestly thought that would sell in 40-60k range but boy was I wrong. Lol. Definitely 2 deep pocket MJ collectors trying to obtain it imo. Another thing to remember is that the 98 Chrome Preview Refractor does not green like the 96 and 97 Chrome MJ refractors. So if youre looking to drop serious money into the "safest" MJ Chrome card this was it. I have never seen a 98 Chrome Preview Refractor turn green so not the issue here. What plagues it is centering. The majority all off centered. Nonetheless it is a beauty that will likely stay that way....I mean it's color won't fade like most prior refractors from 93-97. By 1998 Topps got it right

ok... I'll apply some logic - or try to.
    - its a POP 2, so all you need is 2 deep pocket guys who want best of the best
    - This card rarely pops up in any grade. It sold twice this year (one BGS 8 and one PSA 9 OC - that one relisted a few times). The BGS 8 sold for $3.3k
    - If you figure a BGS 8 going for $3.3k, then what is a PSA 9 really worth? My bet is north 10k.
    - With crazy multiples for PSA 10s in Jordan world that we see for 9 vs 10, that price makes sense (somewhat)
With that being said - give me a few tier 2/3 PSA 10s anytime (if we can find them)

It’s a beautiful and extremely rare 90’s Jordan refractor, with only 78 total copies graded by PSA. And with this copy being 1 of only 2 graded a PSA 10 that rarely comes to market, the sale price makes sense. Putting hierarchy aside or where this card ranks in anyone’s wish list, the card is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. PSA 10 graded copies of rare 90’s Jordan inserts are getting locked away in high net worth collections and this sale will be no different. For all the talk and PR given to Fanatics or Goldin, some respect has to be given to Heritage Auctions. Their clientele are known to have deeper pockets and discerning taste for rare higher end collectibles.
Keep up the great work Cajun. 🙏🏽

I would compare this card with the 1996 Topps Chrome refractor PSA 10 which is a pop 7. Card ladder has the '96 refractor at $55,000 and that's a pretty much a guess because it hasn't sold in awhile.

So this was 3x MJs 96 psa 10 refractor? And 10x some of his best atomic refractors? Zero logic.

With these mega cards I always wondered - does anyone think there will ever be a fractional card ownership model/system? I’ve seen it done with art and race horses and it seems pretty lucrative?

I find myself in the small circle of not paying stupid prices for non rc"s. The player is irrelevant. Especially in todays print runs and products. Whats the difference between flawless and NT? Just cause you paid more for the box? How many gold /10 are made every year? I understand you have a lot of passion for Jordan cards and many share your feelings. Just cause a 8th year+ pop 1 card hits the market, doesnt make it a 10k card. I dont care what kind of shine it has or made of the players underwear. I look at all these prices and laugh. The card will drop 20-80% in weeks, months or year. You are playing hot potato with no gloves. I own less than 30 non rcs of Peyton Manning and those i havent spent more than $30. I have not going to pay 50k+ for the 2024 nfl non playing shield card. Like i said, i seem to be the oddball in the collecting world. You are collecting junk wax cards, that use to be less than $5. Throw a case on it and it magically becomes thousands. Again,no hate...just doesnt make sense to me.

PSA has single-handedly created two words: artificial scarcity.
